Outside 50 - Katie Klatt - USA Freedom - Ep30
On Outside 50's Ep30 we talked with Katie Klatt a Sacramento Sun, San Francisco Iron Maiden, Vice Captain of the USA Freedom, a Melbourne Uni Mugar and now a potential Boston Lady Demon. Katie was one of the first U.S. women to travel to Australia to try and make it in the AFLW. Since then, she’s back in the States obtaining her Master’s Degree at Harvard while looking to take a more relaxed approach to the game. The women’s game has grown so much over the years, and Katie loves seeing the continual improvement of competition. Katie recommends women players to take the game seriously if they want to compete in Australia and also to fine tune and really work on basic skills. While in Boston, Katie is likely to connect with the Boston Demons to train which will be her third USAFL club, but overall is just looking forward to being back on the field like the rest of us during these COVID times. Outside 50 - Colin Smith - Boston Demons - Ep29
Ep29 of Outside 50 we sat down with Colin Smith, President of the Boston Demons. The theme of the episode kept revolving around camaraderie and how much of a close-knit group the Demons truly are, especially being one of the oldest clubs in the USAFL. Over the years, the club has managed to be successful because of the bond shared by its players. As President, Colin really explains how he really wants to push for more recruitment in the coming seasons, and to continue to develop local areas to play metro games as well as continuing to strengthen the women’s team and women's involvement in the club. The Boston Demons club in regular years usually look forward to playing teams like Montreal and Portland, however, with the uncertainty of this season the Demons are trying to get some training going while just keeping their always cohesive culture game strong. Simmo talks candidly with us about the positive welcome that he's received so far, the growth of the game in the States, and his own unique perspective growing up in the rugby league-dominant Sydney suburbs. Outside 50 - Donnie Hess - Des Moines Roosters - Ep27
Ep27 of Outside 50 changes gears a little as we chat about the coaching side of footy with Des Moines Rooster, Donnie Hess. Being in “America’s Heartland,” there are a different breed of players who are predominately American and have a love for the physical side of the sport. Donnie recently transitioned over into the head coach for the Roosters, but has a strong background in coaching his local youth basketball team. Donnie also discusses the fate of the 80/35 tournament that the club hosts yearly and how he hopes the women’s side can grow from the tournament as well. Outside 50 - Drea Casillas - New York Magpies - Ep25
Ep25 of Outside 50 has one of the most involved footy players in the United States, NY Magpie's Drea Casillas. Some might even call her Wonder Woman, Drea talks all things women’s footy from her many roles with starting the NY Lady Magpies to playing on the US Freedom team to being a founder of the Women’s Association and a former board member of the league and now President of the NY Magpies club itself. Wow. Drea's impressive athletic background also lends her to be a role model and leader on the off the field for women’s footy. Outside 50 - Stu Nicol - Al MacGlashan - Chicago Swans - Ep23
Great Ep23 today with guests Stu Nicol and Al MacGlashan of the Chicago Swans FC. Both Stu and Al have a long history to talk about with footy here in the USA, Al especially who first starting seeking out sports to play in Chicago in 1999 after originally coming over from Geelong Victoria, for a 6 month working holiday. Stu is more recent but a true Chicago legend already, reports also an unusual path to footy in Chicago as being a native Scotsman he has been able to represent Scotland in the Euro Cup on two occasions. Stu has a real passion for the game and its growth but also the social events that come with the game, and that bind a team like the Swans together, and has done so for many many years. With the intro of women's footy to Chicago recently and that part of the club growing exponentially, Stu and Al relate how great it is to have now women playing in a Chicago uniform but also taking key roles on the administration of the sport. Outside 50 - Caitlin O'Malley - Wisconsin Wombats - Ep22
Outside 50 with your hosts Rick Shaibani, Tara Cilke and Ben Martinez Ep22 of Outside 50 showcases newly appointed President of the Wisconsin Wombats, Caitlin O’Malley and her efforts to increase recognition of the club and recruitment efforts in the coming year. Caitlin is one of the few women Presidents across the USAFL and has a unique perspective on how to best grow her club as she takes a more active role on the administration side of footy. Currently a Division 4 club, she sees the Wombats moving up divisions in just a few years’ time with the expansion of the club and skill development of the players. The Wombats struggle with retention and recruitment as do many clubs that are in more transient cities, however, Caitlin coming in with new ideas and her leadership skills will no doubt improve efforts to increase numbers. The Wombats pride themselves on coming together as a close-knit group of players turned friends, that all happen to enjoy the great game of footy, with Caitlin leading the way to a bigger, always improving club. Outside 50 - Paddy Smallwood - Bogota Bulldogs - Colombia - Ep21
Outside 50 with your hosts Rick Shaibani, Tara Cilke and Ben Martinez Ep21 of Outside 50 is a fantastic chat with Paddy Smallwood of the Bogota Bulldogs in Colombia Sth America. Paddy originally from Bairnsdale 3 hrs south east of Melbourne, tells of his journey to establishing one of the first teams in Sth America and certainly the first team to play games against USA teams. The Bogota Bulldogs hit the world footy news recently when they played games against the reigning USAFL National Champions the Austin Crows and then the Crows main  adversaries the Denver Bulldogs. Starting and building an Aussie Rules team in a non English speaking nation like Colombia is no easy task, and takes a lot of work and luck as Paddy relates and given that Sth American countries are so entrenched in the game of soccer, it is hats of to Paddy and his clubmates to see what they have achieved so far. As we know footy is in hold for now, but the Bogota Bulldogs have high hopes still of playing games regularly in the USA whilst further developing the game south of the equator. Outside 50 - Max DePina - Seattle Grizzlies - Ep20
Outside 50 with your hosts Rick Shaibani, Tara Cilke and Ben Martinez Ep20 coming atcha with expat Max DePina of the USA Revolution and Seattle Grizzlies. Max is currently playing in Melbourne Australia but we discuss his start with footy on the Seattle Grizzlies and USA Revolution teams. The Seattle Grizzlies have come a long way since Max joined them several years back and continue to gain momentum in the footy community. He has watched his team grow from having to borrow players from other teams, to having two full men’s and one women’s teams at the USAFL Nationals last year. On Max’s Australian journey, the most valuable takeaway for any American coming over to play footy in Australia Max relates is "to be a sponge". While abroad, Max continues to fine-tune his skills while always learning something new from his Australian teammates in efforts to continue growing the game back home and building the Seattle Grizzlies club when he returns. Outside 50 - James Waddell - Denver Bulldogs - Ep19
Outside 50 with your hosts Rick Shaibani, Tara Cilke & Ben Martinez A fantastic chat with James Waddell from Denver Colorado, a truly interesting footy story. James tells us about being an International Baseball Scout after finishing his baseball career in Australia. An avid footy player through even his baseball career, James currently still plays with the Denver Bulldogs when he can. Add being Honorary Consul General of Australia in Denver, he continues to help develop youth Aussie Rules Footy and is truly a 'Renaissance Man' when it comes to athletics in the United States and Australia. James (or Wads as he is known to his teammates) talks about how American players must think differently to be successful in the AFL, and the advice he gives to Americans trying their hand at footy down in Australia. James' experiences in professional baseball both in Australia and the U.S, and his love of the game and unusually legend AFL player Alex Jesaulenko of Carlton, whilst also a raving fan of his home town West Coast Eagles, gives him a unique perspective on the world of international sport. Outside 50 - The Meeting Behind The Barn - Ep17
Outside 50 with your hosts Rick Shaibani & Wayne Kraska. In 1997 an end of year tournament was held in Cincinnati Ohio with teams from the USA and one from Toronto. At the after party held in a far away barn across the state line in Indiana, a meeting was held late'ish in the evening, out the back of the barn from the rowdy crowd. "The Meeting Behind the Barn". That meeting lit by one overhead light and with a group of about 10 footy lovers from around the country, became the birth of the USAFL as we know it today. On this Outside 50 podcast we hear the stories of three attendees of that very meeting nearly 24 years ago. Paul 'Plugger' O'Keefe, Rich Mann and Mike Powers recount the events leading up to that weekend and night, and much of the history they made soon after growing the game of Aussie Rules Football across the USA to what it is today. From around a dozen games in 1997, the games total grew to over a hundred in just a few years, thanks mostly to these three footy lovers and many other club founders around the USA. And the event held at the end of the year, named on that 1997 weekend and won by the Cincinnati Dockers team, was the USAFL National Championships. The USAFL Naationals has now become the biggest Australian Rules Football event in the world. Paul, Rich and Mikey, chat with Outside 50 podcast host Wayne Kraska about those formative years, the characters they remember and the lifelong friendships they made. The people that made the USAFL what it is today, and we are pleased to say they are still going strong and still playing, at least at the Nationals. ;) From the vision of Paul O'Keefe and the support of Rich and Mikey plus, and the others at that meeting and club leaders that followed soon after, we should applaud them often, pay respect and due acknowledgment, as without them many of us would not be enjoying footy as we know it in the USA today. 'The Meeting Behind the Barn' is a historic story of footy growth, passion and the love of the game, that we hope this tale will live for as long as the game is played. Outside 50 - Such Is Life - Editorial - Ep16
Outside 50 with your hosts Rick Shaibani & Wayne Kraska. In this episode we discuss in some detail the USAFL, among other things, it's apparent blackballing of our podcast even though we have only been spreading the news of Aussie Rules footy in the USA, talking to its players, administrators, supporters and even the USAFL's own umpires. We have been disturbed by the lack of acknowledgment by the USAFL's Media Department and the USAFL itself, in ignoring a great coverage of Aussie Rules footy in the USA for no cost or resource strain to them. And also why the USAFL media is arbitrary to put it mildly, and biased recently to the extent of up to 75% (up until now we should add) in covering AFL and AFLW football, when there are 45 clubs and over 50 teams here in the USA, that should we feel be constantly highlighted, talked about and promoted. Also we explain upcoming changes to the Outside 50 podcast and usfootynews.com moving forward, where Rick Shaibani will take over full control and assemble his own team for the podcast and Wayne Kraska will bid farewell and concentrate on another project centered around his business, Play Aussie USA, a sole importer of Sherrin Footballs to the USA and a current USAFL sponsor. One being a full game versus the crew of the HMAS Brisbane when it ported in San Diego when on military exercises a year or so back.
