Montblanc’s watch boss Laurent Lecamp, plus Spider-man and Succession
This week Felix chats with the Managing Director of Montblanc’s Watch Division, Laurent Lecamp. For an interview about watchmaking, we spend a surprising amount of time discussing nature, specifically ice, glacial and otherwise. But don’t worry, it all ties into watches — as is immediately apparent with the 1858 Iced Sea collection in blue, black and green. Beyond the impressive dials, the most remarkable aspect of this watch design is the dolphin-inspired bezel. Before we get Laurent on the line, though, Andy and Felix talk about the watches of Succession season four and whether or not Spider-Man on a watch (Audemars Piguet, natch) works.  Looking for hot drops and spicy goss? Tim Barber on the UK watch scene, and our take on the IWC Ingenieur
Andy has referred to today’s guest as the ‘Felix Scholz of the UK’, but to everyone else, he’s known as Tim Barber and is, just quietly, a far more professional watch journalist than Felix will ever be. We chat to Tim about how his descent into the world of watches, as well as his take on Davide Cerrato’s new job as Bremont CEO, anOrdain’s latest, MoonSwatch and the future of the Swatch Group. Before that, it’s a mixed bag of possibly sociopathic hit men, missing princesses and Tudor watches. IWC Veteran Hannes Pantli on Gerald Genta, the Ingenieur and 50 years of change
Hannes Pantli describes himself as part of the inventory at IWC. We described him as a legend. Both of these things are true. Mr Pantli started his career with IWC in 1972 and has seen the tides of IWC ebb and flow over the years. We talk about the genesis of Gerald Genta’s Ingenieur design, from how it was received at the time and how it’s changed over the years, and why Genta stands out as ‘the’ famous watch designer. Before that, Andy and Felix talk about the cycle of watch enthusiasm, and Andy gets salty on TikTok. This episode is sponsored by IWC; find out more about the new Ingenieur here. IWC Museum Curator David Seyfer on the history of the Ingenieur
IWC’s 2023 release slate has a singular focus — the Ingenieur. This cult classic integrated sports watch has made its triumphant return to the catalogue, and it was one of the major talking points of Watches & Wonders. Two people talking about it were Felix and IWC Museum Curator David Seyfer, and it’s this chat we’ve got for you today. Seyfer delves into the history of this significant design, how he accidentally had the original sketches hidden in the basement, and why he thinks Gerald Genta would approve of this update. Catching up with The Dial Artist and chasing down the Carrera
Fun fact, if you scroll all the way back in the episode listings of OT:, you’ll see that our very first episode was an interview with Chris Alexander, AKA the Dial Artist. Chris was coming up in the world, riding the wave of the Casioak with his beautifully customised dials, as we, well, we were a humble podcast just starting out. So imagine our surprise when Felix ran into Chris at Watches & Wonders three years later: we just had to have a quick chat. On top of that, Andy and Felix chat about the Chase for Carrera, a short film starring Ryan Gosling and Vanessa Bayer. There’s also the latest Hublot Sang Bleu collab, a one-of-a-kind Rolex and the surprisingly entertaining Mario movie. This week’s episode is brought to you by TAG Heuer, who celebrate 60 years of the iconic Carrara. Find out more about this legendary chronograph here. Want more wonders and more watches? Chatting to Anthony Traina and Mark Kauzlarich from Hodinkee, plus a trip to Ulysse Nardin
Watches & Wonders might be well in the rear view, but that hasn’t stopped us from continuing to tell tales from the great Geneva fair. Today we have a lightning round interview with Anthony Traina and Mark Kauzlarich of Hodinkee fame, and Felix tells us about his visit to the Ulysse Nardin Manufacture, including the Donzé Cadrans dial manufacturing facility. There’s also a smattering of Nomos, Beef and Nicholas Cage — you know, the usual. This week’s episode is brought to you by TAG Heuer, who are celebrating 60 years of the iconic Carrara. Nicholas Biebuyck is back, and so are the hot takes
This week we’ve got part two of our chat with TAG Heuer’s Nicholas Biebuyck, where he tells us what he really thinks about the latest Carrera releases and speculates about what sort of watches he’d like to see in the future. Beyond that, we have some thoughts and feelings about recent watch releases, including Lange’s unobtanium chronograph, the revival of Gerald Genta, Tudor’s talking factory and whether or not Ben Clymer talking time with Kermit is hypocrisy or the greatest interview they’ve ever run. Watches & Wonders Debrief, plus TAG Heuer’s Nicholas Biebuyck on the history of the Carrera
Watches & Wonders 2023 is now behind us, so naturally we’ve spent a little time reflecting on the good, the not so good and the great. And when we say ‘some time’ we meant, a seriously sleep deprived Felix and an overworked Andy had an informal chat about what it was like on the ground, some other highlights on the ground, and who’s booth was best. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a rapid-fire chat with TAG Heuer’s Heritage Director Nicholas Biebuyck about the history of the Carrera. Now live: Watches and Wonders 2023, including Rolex, Patek Philippe, TAG Heuer and more
In a move surprising absolutely no one, this week’s episode is all about Watches & Wonders 2023. Felix is on the ground, wheeling, dealing - and serving up the fresh news and hottest takes from the fair!  Recorded earlier this week, Felix and Andy discuss the blue chip releases from the big brands.  Andy gives us the view from afar on the bold moves from Rolex, and the less dramatic Patek novelties. Felix gives his very early impressions on Tudor’s new Black Bay’s and the very impressive suite of new Carreras coming out of TAG Heuer.  Finally, before Felix’s voice gave out on him entirely, there was some brief chat about Cartier and other highlights. This week’s episode is brought to you by TAG Heuer, who are celebrating 60 years of the iconic Carrara. Find out more about this legendary chronograph here. Rebecca Struthers (Struthers Watchmakers) on the hand-made watches and her book, Hands of Time
We’ve spoken to our share of UK-based watchmakers over the years, and one name that kept popping up was Struthers Watchmaking. So it was somewhat inevitable that we would speak to them at some point. We chatted to Dr Rebecca Struthers, one half of Struthers Watchmaking, about how she ended up as a watchmaker, and more importantly, where she’s taking it — specifically the gorgeous and exclusive Project 248. But it’s not just watches that Rebecca crafts, she’s also on the eve of publishing Hands of Time, A Watchmakers History of Time, which takes us through 40,000-odd years of timekeeping with precision and style. Giles Ellis (Schofield Watches) on design, identity and brand building
Today we chat with Giles Ellis, the infectiously passionate founder of Schofield Watches. Ellis has been making his distinctively-cased watches since 2010. Ellis started making watches for the best possible reason — he was looking for a watch he wanted to wear, and nothing on the market at the time was *quite* right, so he made his own. The brand came about organically after that, and Ellis has stuck to his design principles since then. We also chat to Ellis about why UK watchmaking has the appeal and cachet that it does, and what a watch inspired by Japan looks like. Before that, Felix and Andy chat about why the latest MoonSwatch is an object lesson in hype management and why Mr Porter’s list of the best watch podcasts is on the money. Stijn Busschaert (Méraud Watches) on NOS movements and classic designs
Recently Andy has been raving about a well-sized, vintage-inspired chronograph that’s had a firm place on his wrist for the last few weeks: The Antigua from Méraud Watches. So it only made sense to get the founder of this boutique Belgian brand — Stijn Busschaert — on for a chat. Stijn tells us how passion led him to start his own brand, and how a burgeoning new wave of online independents has supercharged the space. Of course, we also dig into the details of the Antigua, in particular the vintage Landeron 248 movements Stijn sourced, to ensure a pure spirit and slim profile. Anders (@everydaycollector) on the mighty Rolex Midas and collecting with style
After years of low-key stalking, a royal stack of Rolex Midas models was all it took for Felix to invite Anders, AKA @everydaycollector onto the pod. Anders, hailing from sunny Norway has a stunning collection of watches, including the aforementioned Rolex. On top of that, there’s vintage Cartier, Royal Oaks, Vacheron Constantin 222s and more. We’re officially one-twelfth of the way through the year, and the watch releases are coming thick and fast — just like Andy’s love of the new 37mm Royal Oak in yellow gold with a turquoise dial. Phil Toledano (Mister Enthusiast) on sculptural cases, collecting and cars
It’s been a long time since UK-born, NYC-residing visual artist and all-around geezer Phil Toledano, AKA Mister Enthusiast, graced OT: — too long, honestly. We started our interview with a clear direction and purpose, to grill him about weird cars, oddball watches and the latest trends in jumpsuits, but our conversation quickly veered very left of centre. Sure, we spoke to Phil about many of these topics, as well as his upcoming watch venture, the fabled four-way collab and his love of all things Italian. Nick Federowicz (Ad Patina) on the art of watch advertising
As if watches weren’t niche enough. Today we dive into the vintage watch ad rabbit hole with Nick Federowicz, better known by his online persona of Ad Patina. Nick makes a living scouring the world for old copies of obscure magazines and finding the nostalgic treasures encased within. Not only do these ads offer a period-correct glimpse of our favourite watches, they shine a light on the world in which they were created, and show us just how much it has changed. Nick explains to us that while these ads show us the watches, what they really offer is a glimpse into the past.  On top of all that, Felix and Andy talk through some of their favourite new releases, including the standouts of LVMH Watch Week, and the re-launched Cartier Tank Française, but more on that next week.  Like your watches with a dash of community inclusion? Victoria Gomelsky on what to expect in 2023 from watches
Happy New Year, everyone! We’re kicking off 2023 in fine form with none other than veteran watch and jewellery writer Victoria Gomelsky.
