Affirmative Action – Then And Now - Did We Fail?
The phrase, “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby,” was once an advertising slogan for CIGARETTES! The year was 1968, the Ad featuring a tall, slender woman in a pantsuit became sort of an unofficial slogan for the National Organization for Women and feminists all over the U.S. At the same time, in the late 1960s, the Federal Communication Commission established rules to encourage radio and television stations to hire more women and minorities. That’s one of the reasons I got my first radio job. So I have real-life experience with Affirmative Action. In, 2021 most of us agree that cigarettes cause cancer, and, in fact, we still haven’t elected a woman for president. And many young women do NOT support Affirmative Action. DEPRESSION SUCKS - Fighting the Big "D" Is Not for Sissies!
Depression Sucks - It killed May for me, but it can't have June. I have two new Female heroes: Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams. I don't play tennis, I don't watch tennis, but these two women athletes make me PROUD to be a woman. Naomi Osaka suffers from depression and anxiety. She's sorry about it. Serena Williams says, 'You have NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR." Osaka is brave. Serena is a Champion! We are such a harsh, unkind, backward society. Nobody should have to apologize for suffering from a mental illness. I haven't posted a podcast since April. In this episode, I explain why. I love you Podcast listeners. Hang in there with me. I have a ton of links in my story. Please find them all on my website. My blog is a basic script/transcript for this podcast.

The Death of Local News: One-On-One with Mark Hyman
Local News Coverage is disappearing in America City-by-City. Critics of Television News shrug and say, “So What?” But when it happens in your town, it can be devastating. Think about it. No news from City Hall, no local traffic, no local weather. Sure. You can log on and check your phone, but if there are no local reporters, or news people, or meteorologists, who is there for you? An answer is usually a person working for a major conglomerate in another city, hundreds of miles from your home. This scenario I described is happening in Casper, Wyoming. But there is a small but vocal grassroots effort to revive local news. It may result in the birth of a television station called Casper 1 - TV at a Higher Elevation. Former News Director Mark Hyman is my guest on One-On-One. We talk about "Casper 1 - TV at a higher Elevation," and more. For more information on Casper 1 http://casper1tv.org/

Women - Hit Hard by COVID
Women continue to be hurt by COVID 19. More than 2.3 million women have left the workforce since February 2020. Millions left the workforce to care for their children and to handle education responsibilities. The ones I've spoken with are not complaining. "Kids come first," is what I've heard. Still, it's going to be tough to get back to where we were. Now is a good time to talk to a woman you know. And say Thank you. A transcript of this One-On-One episode will be posted on gloriamoraga.com. Including links to sources.

Anti-Asian American Hate Crimes Increase - One-On-One
If ever there was a time for all of us to stop and talk to each other about ways to end racism and Hate, THIS IS IT! Anti Asian-American Pacific Islander Hate Crimes increased 150 percent in 2020 when compared to 2019. According to the organization "Human Rights Watch," cities across the United States are seeing numerous attacks, especially against older people and women. The City of Oakland, CA, reported 20 attacks during January 2021. Hate Crimes are happening everywhere, but New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area are experiencing the most blatant violence. I spoke One-On-One with Professor Timothy Fong from Sacramento State's Ethnic Studies Department. Historians say the United States has a long, dark history of discrimination against immigrants from Asia. To watch the video and read my blog, and find related links, go to https://gloriamoraga.com/

One-On-One - The Movies and Happy Endings
Jane Austen, the author of Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and other great books, wrote, “Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery. I quit such odious subjects as soon as I can, impatient to restore everyone to comfort and a happy ending.” I agree with my sister Jane Austen 100 percent. In literature and film, in art and llife, I crave Happy endings. I had a great One-On-One conversation with my Movie Buddy and Nephew Joey Garcia. Our main topic was "WandaVision." He gives it 5 Stars, Two Thumbs Up. I have a problem with the ENDING!!! No Spoilers!

Positive Attitude - Communication Success at Work
How many times have you heard the phrase, “Choose Your Attitude?” It comes from Viktor Frankl. This is a quote from Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir, “Man’s Search for Meaning,” “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” “Everything can be taken from a man (or woman) but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Viktor Frankl was tortured and imprisoned at four different Nazi Concentration Camps between 1942 to 1945, including Auschwitz. His parents, brother, and pregnant wife all died. Frankl’s theory, logotherapy, argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. I love this. Listening - Communication at Work
LISTENING: It’s a communication skill that many of us don’t think about. We hear plenty. But we don’t listen. Merriam-Webster defines hearing as the “process, function, or power of perceiving sound; specifically: the special sense by which noises and tones are received as stimuli.” Listening means “to pay attention to sound; to hear something with thoughtful attention, and to give consideration.” And there are different types of Listening—Appreciative, Empathic, Comprehensive, and Critical. Giving Criticism - One-On-One
Giving Criticism is not as easy as it sounds. If you care about your co-workers, you don't want to hurt their feelings. But there are times at work when a critique is required. Like the annual review. While I have delivered dozens of reviews during my 10 years as a manager, not all of them were dramatic, but all were stressful. Here is some advice from INC.com. The link is below: AND #7 IS MY FAVORITE SUGGESTION! Talk to each other. 1. Be Straightforward 2. Be Specific 3. Criticize the WORK, not the Person 4. Don't Tell Someone they are Wrong 5. Say Something Nice - Compliment 6. Make Suggestions - Don't Give Orders 7. Have a Conversation Links: https://www.inc.com/jayson-demers/the-7-golden-rules-of-how-to-give-criticism-without-sounding-like-a-jerk.html

Speak Up - Explain Your Side
This episode's subtitle could be, "How I Ruined by Radio Career after Mispronouncing John Montefusco." It wasn't just the fact that I butchered the Giant's Pitcher's name on live radio. It was what happed AFTER that broadcast. My communication skills were non-existent after my first 10-hour radio shift. But I learned from my mistakes; I'm sharing my tips with all of you now. I am posting the transcript/blog to this podcast episode on my website.gloriamoraga.com. Great Communication - Part 1 - Bad Paralanguage: Watch Your TONE!
Great Communication is a package deal. It's not only what you say when you are speaking but How you speak your words. Some of my biggest communication failures happened because of my Paralanguage. The jpeg says it all, "HOW I RUINED MY NEWS MANAGEMENT CAREER - PARALANGUAGE MISTAKES." Here is the definition of Paralanguage from YourDictionary.com "Paralanguage is nonverbal communication such as your tone, pitch, or manner of speaking. An example of paralanguage is the pitch of your voice. ... such as tone of voice, laughter, and, sometimes, gestures and facial expressions that accompany speech and convey further meaning." My Podcast goals are to help all of you learn from my communication mistakes. This episode of One-On-One is the first of a Five-Part Series examining my big Comms. Blunders. I share my horribly stupid paralanguage mistakes in front of Broadcast Corporate Managers. This is the first time I've shared this story, I had pushed it to the back of a drawer in my mind, and it was painful taking it out. I hope it helps someone. Please Subscribe! The entire transcript of my script is going to be posted on gloriamoraga.com

Please Don't Yell at Each Other In the Grocery Store
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! AND HAPPY PRESIDENT'S DAY! As we get our vaccines and try to get out more - WITH MASKS - it seems like we are all out of touch with Best Communication Practices. I offer some tips on "How to Talk with People" in this episode of One-On-One. My advice is pretty basic-DON'T TALK POLITICS IN THE HAIR SALON. DON'T PLAY VIDEOS AND AUDIO LOUDLY AT THE NAIL SALON. AND DON'T YELL AT EACH OTHER IN THE GROCERY STORE. I blame COVID because I'm out of touch with the best way to talk to people. I know this is true; People in Hell Want Ice Water! And being locked up makes me feel like I'm dying of THIRST!

Impeachment - How It Works
Impeachment is going to be on the minds of many American's this coming week. The U.S. Senate will begin Donald J. Trump's Impeachment Trial on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Someone asked me recently, "If the House of Representatives Impeached him already, what is the Senate doing?" The Senate is responsible for the Impeachment Trial. There are multiple steps to the Impeachment of a President. I've outlined some of them in this One-On-One Episode. Our Best Presidential Communicators - Why They Are Great
February is not only a month to celebrate love and Black History Month; we also acknowledge some Presidential Birthdays. Four chief executives were born in Feb. They each take great care with their words. They practice before they speak; they are thoughtful. More importantly, they use the power of words and speech to Unite.

The U.S. Capitol, Hate, Racism, Insurgents, Lies, Impeachment, Death and Love
The U.S. Capitol, Hate, Racism, Insurgents, Lies, Impeachment, Death, and Love. The title of this episode of Gloria Moraga - One-On-One says it all. 2021 has been a hell of a year, and it's only January. A woman I love very much, my Auntie Gloria died yesterday; and today would have been my mother's birthday, but she died decades ago of cancer. So, of all the topics and communication issues discussed in this podcast, my most important message is to talk to your loved ones and tell them, "I love You!"
