A Mystery Within A Mystery: Who and Where is Joanna Lopez?
On January 14, 1989, NBC affiliate TV station WMAQ in Chicago was broadcasting their regular sign-off for the evening. This included a number of Public Services announcements, followed by the nightly playing of the National Anthem. After the station signed off for the early moring hours, a missing child poster was displayed. But there was something incredibly unnerving about this particular broadcast. The first was the lack of information. An extremely poor quality photo (you can barely make out the person's face, it's that bad) was displayed along with the text "Missing-Joanna Lopez" alongside a Chicago phone number. No other information accompanied the image. Two years later on the same station, the same obscure posted appeared again after the station signed off--this time the image remained for 10 seconds before switching to the familiar colored bars that anyone familiar with TV in the early 1990's likely remembers seeing. All this would lead you to the conclusion that Joanna Lopez, whoever she was, was still missing in 1991. But there was just one problem--there is no record of anyone by the name Joanna Lopez going missing in the late 1980's in Chicago.Armchair detectives have spent hours combing the Internet for any record, any article, any evidence that a person by the name of Joanna Lopez ever existed and was missing in 1989.Today's episode features returning guest Joann Li and together we discuss all the questions around this bizarre and incredibly obscure situation. NOTE: This episode discusses a television broadcast and an image-which unfortunately cannot be displayed in a podcast format. Undetermined: Who Killed Hugues de la Plaza?
It was a summer night in San Francisco, California in 2007. 36-year-old Hugues de la Plaza spent the night out with friends at a nightclub, drinking and dancing. All seemed well and Hugues seemed happy. He was, after all, celebrating a promotion he had just received. So when Hugues de la Plaza was found dead in his apartment the next morning, friends and family were baffled to learn that the San Francisco police department was treating his death as a suicide. While the door was dead-bolted from the inside, Hugues was found with three stab wounds--to the abdomen, the chest, and the neck. Even more puzzling is that there was no weapon found near his body. What happened to Hugues de la Plaza in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 2, 2007? Was he the target of someone's anger? He did love to date and often didn't care if the women he flirted with had a husband or boyfriend. Or, like the San Francisco Police Department suggests, was this a case of a spontaneous and bizarre suicide? Elaine Erickson is back with me for this episode to discuss the disputed death of Hugues de la Plaza, a man full of life taken too soon.To watch the 48 Hours Mystery Episode of this case: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/48-hours-mystery-a-case-for-murder/Follow the podcast on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/143mysteries/

Unhappy Anniversary: The Tragic and Confusing Disappearance of Asha Degree
22 years ago on February 14, 2000, Valentine's Day also fell on a Monday. It also happened to be Harold and Iquilla Degree's wedding anniversary. But it would not prove to be a happy occasion, as at some point in the early morning hours, their 9-year old daughter, Asha, would climb out of bed, pack a bag, and leave her house and would never return. Perhaps as baffling as the reason Asha left her home that evening despite being timid, afraid of the dark and of thunderstorms, are the subsequent clues that would show up in the months and even years after that fateful night. Sadly, with each twist and turn in this case, we're left with only more questions, and the Degree family is left without their beloved daughter and sister. Join myself and returning guest Elaine Erickson for this Valentine's Day special episode as we explore the events of Valentine's Day 22 years ago and what could have happened to Asha Degree.

Danielle Imbo wasn't planning on going out on Saturday, February 19, 2005, but when an old friend and on-and-off-again boyfriend Richard Petrone invited her out to see some live music, she agreed. Science Mysteries (Feat. Dave Ford)
If you are interested in science and/or unsolved mysteries, this is the episode for you. I am joined by my good friend and space enthusiast, Dave Ford, to discuss two interesting medical occurences and the vastness that is outer space. In February of 1994, a woman by the name of Gloria Ramirez was admitted to the hospital with complications stemming for her cervical cancer before she sadly passed away less than hour later. But it wasn't her cause of death that was mysterious, it was the fact that several medical personnel became ill after working with her/her body. Was it a case of mass hysteria or was there something more deadly lurking in the hospital room? In March of 2013 a mysterious illness befell the people of the rural village of Kalachi in Kazakhstan. About a quarter of the population would suddenly fall asleep in the middle of every-day activities and stay asleep for days or even weeks at a time. What's behind the strange disease? Is it a disease at all? And why has it only impacted a single rural village in the world? It's perhaps one of the greatest mysteries of all time--what is outer space? What is at the end of it? How did it start? What will the future of space travel look like, and will Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos colonize Mars? We cover it all, and more. Special thanks to guest Dave Ford. How Bizarre-Three Odd Mysteries (Feat. Joann Li)
Today we are easing you into the weekend with some mysteries that don't involve a murder or a missing person. Despite that, these are still head-scratchers and fun to think and learn about. In November of 1987, someone hijacked the signal for 2 television stations in Chicago in what is arguably one of the most iconic instances of video piracy ever. Who was behind the Max Headroom Signal Intrusion? In 1981, residents on Thornton Street in Birmingham England were tormented by stones being continously pelted at their homes, causing severe damage and obviously, severe anxiety. Despite drastic measures by the police to locate the source of this, the rock attacks continued for THREE YEARS with no culprit ever being found. Was it a dedicated vandal, or something of the paranormal nature? In 2009, strange posts referencing an obscure restaurant that wasn't open anymore started to appear online as comments on various posts throughout the web. The posts increased in volume and spanned over the course of 5 years, all praising "Captain Kutchie and his famous key-lime pies". Who was behind these strange posts and more importantly-why? Featuring a very special guest and a dear friend of mine, Joann Li.
