032 The Secret Rescue: An untold story of American nurses and medics behind Nazi lines with author Cate Lineberry
There is so much to learn about nursing from its history.  In this episode of One Love for Nurses, we learn about the early history of flight nursing.  I always say that it takes a great deal of courage to be a nurse.  It especially took a great deal of courage for flight nurses and other air personal during World War II, the infancy of the specialization.  Many lives were saved through the efforts of these brave nurses and medics.  Oh, the stories they could surely share. I love the profession of nursing.  I love its history, and the stories of everyday women and men who challenged themselves to tread through uncharted territory to be catalysts for change and innovation.  Nursing history is full of historical richness.  Unfortunately, many of these stories are at risk of slipping away with the passing of each nursing veteran. Thankfully, author Cate Lineberry has given us a great account of World War II history while also spotlighting nursing’s contribution in the area of medical air transport.  In her book, The Secret Rescue, you will learn about the 13 nurses, 13 medics, and 4 air crew who found themselves behind Nazi lines during an ill fated air evacuation mission.  Cate is our guest on this episode of One Love for Nurses. If you enjoy this podcast, you may also like this video: The Secret Rescue: American Nurses and Medics Return from Albania How can you and I help preserve the nursing profession’s history, especially in today’s digital world? 031 Dr. Ed Briggs and Dr. Patricia Posey-Goodwin Discuss Healthcare Policy, Nurse Lobbying and the Florida Nurses Association
Nurses must stand up, be counted, and let there voices be heard!  There is no greater and more effective way to do this than becoming involved with your nursing association, locally or nationally, and its legislative efforts. Edward Briggs, DNP, ARNP-C, President of the Florida Nurses Association and Patricia Posey-Goodwin, EdD, MSN, BSN, ASN – Northwest Florida Region Director are guests on this episode of the One Love for Nurses podcast.  Dr. Briggs and Dr. Posey-Goodwin discuss how nurses can become involved in healthcare policy and the role of the Florida Nurses Association in representing the state’s nurses and the public’s best interest. Helen Keller once said, “I am only one; but I still am one.  I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do something I can do.”  In this episode these questions are discussed and answered: What is health policy? How does this affect nurses?  What is the best way to be an “informed” nurse? How can an individual nurse make a difference in public health policy? Are nurses innately competent to approach lawmakers on health care legislative issues?  Will lawmakers be welcoming of our input?  What kind of support can we expect to receive from our nursing associations when it comes to legislative lobbying? What is the benefit of a nursing student getting involved in his or her state nurses association?  Belonging to a nursing organization is not cheap. What is the return on investment for a nurse? In Florida, FNA Lobby Days are coming up on March 25 and 26. What does this entail? How can nurses get involved?  Nurse lobbying efforts are making a difference! Recently, here in Florida, the Florida Nurses Association gained a real victory in the state by seeing to it that the “doctor title bill” was not implemented. If it had passed, this bill would have placed limitations on nurses with doctorate degrees to referred to as “Doctor”.  Thankfully, the bill was defeated successfully! Are you a Florida nurse?  Learn about the legislative and lobbying process for nurses!  Attend the Florida Nurse Lobby Days. Tuesday & Wednesday, March 25-26, 2014 Here is a great video explaining Florida Nurse

029 Nurse Inventor Sarah Mott Helps To End Stethoscope Hassles
The scientist Jonathan Schattke once said, "Necessity is the mother of invention, it is true, but its father is creativity, and knowledge is the midwife." It has been said that nursing is an art and a science.  It is a marvelous thing when the two come together through innovation and creativity.  How true this is for nurses, especially these days.  Innovation is currently a buzzword in nursing and health care; however, the idea is nothing new for the nursing profession.  We are naturally innovative.  Whether it is the implementation of new systems to improve care, the development of technology, or fabricating an apparatuses to solve a patient care problem, nurses are innately creative. Nurse inventors have developed solutions to improve patient safety, such as Sharon Rogone’s invention of the Bili-Bonnet a photo-therapy mask to protect a neonate or newborn’s eye, or the Snugli soft baby carrier invented by nurse Ann Moore. Probably the most universally appreciated nurse invention was the Kotex sanitary pads invented by World War I Army nurses, who where inspired by the super absorbency of the cellucotton used for dressings. One of the latest nurse innovations is the Nurse Born Stethoscope Holster by Sarah Mott.  She is a nurse with a wealth of experience in rehabilitation and traumatic brain injuries, period, orthopedic, oncology, home health, and admissions, who recognized a nursing related problem, dreamed about a solution and put a plan into action. Sarah was inspired by a common nursing problem…what to do with your stethoscope, aside from hanging it around your neck, when it is not in use.  Because Sarah followed her innovative dream, nursing colleagues and other medical professionals have access to the easy to use Nurse Born Stethoscope Holster, which provides freedom from neck strain and discomfort while keeping this valuable piece of nursing equipment at your side. In this episode, Sarah will discuss: How the idea for the Nurse Born Stethoscope Holster came into being The challenges and successes that she has experienced as an inventor An over view of the steps involved in developing an a product A few of her tips for success and finding a mentor as a nurse inventor   Sarah Mott also shares a few helpful resources for any nurse inventors, such as… Manufacturing.comSCO

027 Writing, Creating and Rebecca Livermore
Our digital world is a wide-open frontier. There is no end to the opportunities for nurses, whether we are entrepreneurs, artisans, or corporately-minded. We can put our content out there for the world to be inspired, motivated or educated by what we create. “Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try” – Dr. Seuss The opportunities for nurses to express themselves abound these days… and blogging is the perfect way to do just that. It provides nurses with an avenue to express themselves personally and professionally. In return, our public, whether patient or colleague can access our perspective and learn from our experience. Blogging is a wonderful way for a nurse to begin to build a personal platform for entrepreneurial and career promotion. Also, nurses who are willing to put their knowledge into written form are finding themselves in demand among the medical community looking for online content. In this episode of One Love for Nurses, my friend Rebecca Livermore from Professional Content Creation shares with us how she became an online content creator. Nurses will also learn from Rebecca: How to become a blogger How to create multiple digital content creations from a blog What opportunities exist for nurses in online content creation Rebecca's website contacts: professionalcontentcreation.comprofessionalcontentcreation.com/repurpprofessionalcontentcreation.com/blogginghabit

021 Nurses & the “Us” vs. “Them” Attitudes w/ Healthcare Exec Chris Comeaux
In this episode of One Love for Nurses, my guest is Chris Comeaux, a healthcare executive with Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care in Western North Carolina.  Chris is the President/CEO of Four Seasons and the host of the weekly radio program Healthcare Café. I love talking with Chris, because it is always easy to be open and honest with him regarding the challenges we face as nurses in healthcare these days.  Often our nursing perspectives clash with our leadership- or at least we think so.  It is easy to develop a “us” vs. “they” mentality with executive leadership.  Chris and I cut through some of this and talk about ways to open up communication and move forward with organizational goals. This article was referenced in our discussion: Dingel-Stewart, S., & LaCoste, J. (2004). Light at the end of the tunnel: a vision for an empowered nursing profession across the continuum of care. 019 How to Influence Without Authority with Dave Stachowiak
John Maxwell has said, “Leadership is influence-nothing more, nothing less.”  Some nurses may be saying to themselves, “I am not in a leadership position at this time” or “I have no desire to be in a leadership position.  Just let me take care of my patients and leave the leadership to those with the desire and qualifications to do so." But as nurses, we are often in say quasi-leadership positions, such as when we are leading a unit for shift in a relief charge role or overseeing the work of a nurse’s aid.  Reality is that we gently lead physicians and others through some healthcare processes.  So, we may often find ourselves in leadership positions without any given authority. As Christ followers, we have the honor and opportunity to be His light in our work environments.  Learning to lead through influence is important aspect of our faith walks, whether we are in formal leadership positions, or not. In nursing, we never know when we will quickly be called on to fill a leadership position.  Our guest for this episode of the One Love for Nurses podcast is Dave Stachowiak.  Dave is going to teach us how to lead through positive influence today, so we are even better prepared for the call to leadership that we may receive tomorrow. Dave Stachowiak, Ed.D. is the host of the Coaching for Leaders podcast and leads its online community.  In addition to this work, Dave is also a senior vice president of Dale Carnegie Training of Southern Los Angeles and vice president of Innovate Learning.  In addition to these roles, Dave teaches leadership skills to master’s level nursing students and is the co-host of the Ending Human Trafficking podcast. It is important for nurses to positively influence healthcare teams.  However, this can be done even without authority. Dave Stachowiak says, “Even if you can’t dictate compliance you can get enthusiastic cooperation.” In this episode, he shares 8 ways to do just that: 1)  Stop wishing for control 2)  Move beyond compliance 3)  Care 4)  Offer to help 5)  Set expectations 6)  Thank people in public 7)  Be real 8)  Swim with champions Let’s keep this conversation going!  Tell us how you are going to lead with

015 Chris Comeaux- Four Seasons Healthcare Executive & Radio Host Honors Nurses w/ Suzie Farthing
I was excited and honored to be asked by Chris Comeaux to participate in an interview for the Healthcare Café Radio Show sponsored by Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care in Western North Carolina.  Chris is the President/CEO of Four Seasons and the host of the weekly radio program.   I enjoyed my conversation with Chris regarding the importance of nursing in healthcare today and its faith-based history.  So much so, I wanted to share it with you in this episode of One Love for Nurses. A little about Chris… Chris Comeaux is a quality person and health care leader. He served on the Board of Directors for One Love Nursing Ministries (One Love for Nurses) during our organization's early years. I found him to be genuinely excited about the potential that we have to holistically serve others through health care. What really caught my attention about Chris is his sincere appreciation for nurses and the jobs we do. On top of all of this, he is intelligent and creative. Chis Comeaux is the kind of leader others find easy to follow. You can more recorded radio episodes at Healthcare Cafe .
