In Search of the Crystal Skull Episode 23: Strange World
In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2022 Disney animated film Strange World. A family called the Clades consisting of an explorer named Jaeger and his son Searcher are traveling around the mountains and unknown lands. One day, Searcher discovers a plant that releases energy. Jaeger wishes to continue exploring while Searcher wishes to settle down and take the plant to their hometown Avelonia to help their community. After a massive disagreement, they go their separate ways. 25 years later, Searcher is a farmer with a wife and son whose discovery has made Avelonia a much easier and advanced town. However, the plant source is dying and he has to explore the unknown lands to find out how to solve the problem before they die out completely.  When the film came out in theaters, it received mixed to negative reviews making only $72 million dollars out of a $135 million dollar budget making it one of the biggest bombs Disney has released in years. Some people blamed the low box office numbers due to little to no advertisement while others blame it due to its LGBTQ representation in the form of Searcher's son Ethan. In Search of the Crystal Skull Episode 22: The Santa Clause
In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, 90s Christmas Movie Month concludes with a lookback at the 1994 Walt Disney live action film The Santa Clause. A toy businessman named Scott Calvin has to watch over his young son Charlie around Christmas Eve while his ex wife and her husband head out. The night goes uneventful until Scott and Charlie see a man fall from their roof and disappear leaving nothing but his suit and sleigh with reindeer. Scott puts on the suit and delivers all the toys to the children and heads to the North Pole learning from the head elf Bernard that he's the new Santa Claus. Over the course of a year, Scott slowly transforms into Santa and Charlie convinces his mom and stepdad that his dad is Santa, but they don't believe him. Even Scott doesn't believe that he's Santa until his mannerisms, body, and hair changes.  When the movie premiered in theaters, it received mixed to positive reviews making $190 million dollars out of a $22 million dollar budget. Nowadays, it's a Christmas staple that has 2 sequels and a miniseries on Disney+. The movie currently has a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? 25 Days of Christmas: White Christmas
Merry Christmas, everyone! In the last episode of 25 Days of Christmas, Patricia and Carlene discuss about the 1954 film White Christmas. Two former World War II soldiers become famous singers and performers. While in Florida, they receive a letter from their former friend from the war to watch his sisters' performance. After being impressed with it, one of the singers named Phil decide to help them out after the sisters have to pay money that they don't have. He gives him his tickets to escape via train. Now, the four of them are heading to Vermont at a failing lodge that is run by the singers' former general from the war. In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, 90s Christmas Movie Month continues with Arun and Patricia discussing about the 1990 comedy film Home Alone. A young boy named Kevin McCallister is left home alone after his family accidentally forgot him while heading to Paris for Christmas vacation. While his mother Kate is trying to head home, Kevin is having the time of his life. Meanwhile, two thieves named Harry and Marv are planning to steal from every home around the neighborhood, including Kevin's home. Kevin has to protect his home using clever booby traps to prevent them from coming in. When the movie premiered in theaters, it made $476 million dollars and received mixed to positive reviews. It was the highest grossing Christmas movie of all time until 2018's Illumination's The Grinch and the highest grossing comedy film of all time until 2011's The Hangover Part II. Roald Dahl Retrospective Episode 19: Roald and Beatrix: The Tale of the Curious Mouse
In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2020 Sky TV film Roald and Beatrix: The Tale of the Curious Mouse, which is based on the true events of a six year old Roald Dahl and a fifty-six year old Beatrix Potter, the writer behind the Peter Rabbit books. It's 1922 and Roald Dahl's father had recently died from pneumonia. Roald was told by his mother Sofie that he may need to attend boarding school, which he refuses. He runs away from home hoping to meet up with his idol Beatrix Potter. Meanwhile, Beatrix is stressed with her finishing her latest book since her mind is focused on buying land from the Lake District so that her sheep can have the space to roam around. She is also being bombarded by her publisher to change some things to make it friendlier for the children. When the film premiered on Sky TV, it was critically acclaimed. However, similar to Roald Dahl's Esio Trot and Revolting Rhymes, it was released exclusively in the U.K. Is it a good film that respects both Roald Dahl and Beatrix Potter? In Search of the Crystal Skull Episode 19: Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Patricia and Arun tackle another theme. This time, it's 90s Christmas movies and they start with the 1994 film Miracle on 34th Street, the remake of the 1947 film of the same name. The Cole's department store hires an old man in the street named Kris Kringle to become their Santa Claus on their Thanksgiving Day parade after firing their previous Santa learning that he was intoxicated during his shift. He becomes so successful as their mall Santa that Cole's rival store Shoppers Express wants to do everything they can to stop their competitor, even willing to sabotage Kris with his claim that he's the real Santa Claus. Cole's director of special events, Dorey Walker, and her daughter Susan don't believe that Kris is the real Santa, but find him welcoming, caring, having a loving personality, and charming. Things get more complicated when Santa assaults a man and is arrested and Susan makes an impossible Christmas wish.   The film received mixed to negative reviews when it premiered in theaters making $46.3 million dollars calling it "inferior" and "unnecessary" since the 1947 version was already a Christmas classic.
