OTR #19 Wine for Normal People with Elizabeth Schneider
Cut through snooty wine talk! (And the banter between Elizabeth, Scott and Michelle BEFORE the recording is almost better than when they decided to be "official.") Guest Elizabeth Schneider, creator of Wine for Normal People (podcast, book and website of the same name) joins Scott & Michelle. Elizabeth talks about how she got her start into the wine business – which was kind of a rocky start. Of course, the three of them get into the debate of what price level signifies a “good” bottle of wine. (No one agrees with Michelle – still) Plus, a lot of talk about how wine is an agricultural product and Elizabeth dives into the neo-temperance movement. Scott quizzes Elizabeth on wine pairings for a variety of foods. Oh – and don’t do the “Tour de Franzia.” Elizabeth’s many wine recommends made during the show: Guru – the $14 bottle of wine that tastes like a $50 bottle. https://egobodegas.com/wines/goru-monastrell-ingles/ Spain and Italy are great places to find a good bottle for a great value. Scott thew Michelle under the bus about Merlot, so now her assignment is to find a bottle from Cotes de Bordeaux region, Castillon region or Saint Emilien region Get Elizabeth’s book at WineforNormalPeople.Com Listen to her podcast Join her Patreon channel Get Scott’s Recipes at SportingChef.Com Follow Scott on Instagram and Facebook and YouTube Follow Michelle on Instagram

OTR017: Wild Game 102
A lot of people thought we wouldn't make it past Season One, but look at us now! (Actually, Scott and Michelle didn't think they'd make it past season one...) One of our most popular eps from Season 1 was just about wild game cooking hacks (eps 5) so we asked our audience for their best & worst cooking advice - and Scott shares his very simple advice for cooking wild game. (Don't soak it in buttermilk, to begin). And how sometimes, even if all things are equal, the taste can simply depend on what the animal eats.

OTR Eps 16: Ryan Newkirk of Steinbeck Vineyard
What's it like to grow so many grapes you only use 1% of them to make your own wine? Ryan Newkirk of Steinbeck Vineyard is first and foremost a farmer of the Paso Robles land, who actually enjoys the two “b’s” – beer and bourbon. But he knows his stuff when it comes to wines. He shares why Paso wines can be drank “sooner” than other regions due to the weather and soil. Plus, Scott and Ryan discuss deer management at the winery (say what? Yes!) Scott was drinking 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon “The Crash” (be sure to listen to Ryan tell the story of a B-26 Bomber that crashed in the middle of the vineyard) https://www.steinbeckwines.com/product/2015-The-Crash Learn more about Steinbeck Vineyard https://www.steinbeckwines.com Follow Scott http://Instagram.Com/SportingChef Follow Michelle http://instagram.com/ladysportsman

Michelle & Scott welcome public land hunter & TV show host Randy Newberg, Hunter. Randy is probably the best elk hunter on the planet, and self-proclaimed fourth best bull-shitter in his family. Randy shares what happens when there's a lot of windshield time with his crew between one hunt to another - the genius idea of "Shop Stories" now on his YouTube channel. You'll learn why he has a bland Scandinavian palate, why muskrat trapping is his favorite, which prompts Michelle to show her homemade coyote fur hat - and Randy confirms Michelle is, in fact, a wine snob. OTR007: Picky Mickey
What is Michelle’s nickname? Only her parents use it. (hint: it’s Mickey) Is Mickey picky? Scott gives her a picky eater's test and we find out. Shocker of the week: turns out that cooking is subjective! Scott reveals that he doesn't love cooking competition reality TV shows. He says cooking should be celebrated and shared, not turned into a loser-leave-town cage match with three ill-tempered judges pretending to speak for everyone. You'll love this open discussion between two friends who love to challenge each other!

OTR006: Scott Behind the Scenes
If you host television shows and travel all over cooking for a living, stuff happens. So Michelle asked Scott for some juicy BTS tales. One starts with friends squishing dog poop between their toes at the foot of their bed in the middle of the night. What? Sticking with this theme, Scott reluctantly shares the story of a morning after a night of eating street food while on a duck hunt in Mexico. We’ll leave it at that for now. Then Michelle asks about Scott’s go-to recipe for cooking waterfowl. What he does to change somebody’s mind if they say they don’t like duck. Then a go-to venison approach, which draws to the surface a pet peeve… something about backstrap medallions. And a go-to fish recipe. And Michelle scoffs at Scott’s claim of being a multi-tasker, a bold assertion for any man. Isn’t Scott going to ask Michelle for her go-to recipe? Of course: for “cheese.” What? You’ll have to listen to find out what happens after that.

OTR005: Kitchen Hacks
Just once, you'd love to be a fly on the wall when a world-class chef is kicking back and spilling the beans about things he does every day to make food taste so good, right? Well, buzz your way over to this corner and listen, as Scott Leysath, The Sporting Chef, dishes on his favorite kitchen hacks. Hack #1: most kitchen gadgets are things you can throw away. Oh, and he's big into brine. It adds moisture, flavor, and all that briny goodness replaces what would taste like blood. Ewww. More of what you will learn: * What do coolers have to do with moist meat that stays hot for hours? * Should you let your guests see you remove cooked chicken from a cooler, wrapped in a towel? * When is it a good idea to freeze cheese? * What does soup have in common with books? * How many times did Michelle's family start the kitchen on fire while deep frying dinner? (A: zero, because they called it supper! rimshot... But there's more to the story.) * Do you know what it takes to make good bone broth? * get ready as Scott begins his war against bullion cubes. * What, for God's sake, is the difference between stock and broth? * Does anybody still have a fondu pot? How about the little forks with color-coded markings so you can keep your cheese bath separated from everybody else's? Until next time, keep your hooks wet but your fish fillets dry in thick paper towels, so they can soak up the flavor of what you cook them in! Not sure if we drank enough during this show...

Off the Record 004: Vodcast
Scott and Michelle test vodkas while attempting to record an episode. Scott pierces the veil on brand-name vodkas - and the shenanigans that he does during parties. Plus, he dives into his favorite vodka drink - and how people mess it up time and again. (We welcome ideas to name his drink.) We debate whether Two Buck Chuck is real wine. Other meaty questions: Michelle's value system doesn't allow her to eat non-meat forms, can housewives fillet fish? At what age are you expected to unhook your own fish?
