Off The Air With Rich Herrera: ESPN/Sports USA Radio’s Mike Morgan
I remember when we first got cable and was so excited to get ESPN. I would get up extra early before the sun came up on Thursday morning to watch the Canadian Football League. Wow, have times changed. An announcer that bring you games 7 days a week can be found everywhere. Sometimes we forget how much it to put on these random games on Tuesday night from Vandy. This week, I wanted to take a step back and look at what goes into the triple header broadcasts we see on TV on Saturdays. Mike Morgan is one of the hardest working guys in the business who pops up on my TV a couple times a week, but what happens in between his game on Wed and his game on Sat. This week he takes us off the air. Follow Rich Herrera on Twitter: @RBIrich Subscribe to the show on iTunes and Stitcher and don't forget to rate and review the show! Off The Air With Rich Herrera: Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton
What is more difficult: perfecting something or blaze the trail for others to follow? The answer is BOTH! That's exactly what radio broadcasters like Dave Sims did at the beginning of WFAN in New York City. While that was going on, there was a guy on the West Coast named Hacksaw that made people stay on hold, if you could even get through on the phone to call him, or sit in the parking lot for an extra ten minutes to hear his HEADLINES because you couldn’t miss what he had to say. While that is a feat for his weekday show, On the weekends he was also able to make you stand in cheer calling the games of your favorite team, and then come back on Monday and share stores from the game, Now that is something. Lee Hacksaw Hamilton is an innovator in sports broadcasting. One of the first BIG STARS in sports talk radio while at the same time calling NFL games each weekend. This week we sit down with someone who helped inspire me into getting in to Sports Radio. Off The Air With Rich Herrera: Army/Navy Week
Pick a side. Army or Navy? 364 days a year they are brothers in arms defending our nation and keeping us free. One day a year they compete on the gridiron for bragging rights that carry on for the entire year. As the Army Corps of Cadets and the Brigade of Midshipman march into the stadium, the best and the brightest our nation has to offer take center stage on the college football landscape. All year long, they work hard to Beat Army or Beat Navy. This week, we salute The US Military Academy and the US Naval Academy by spotlighting the Voices of Army and Navy Football. Rich Demarco is the Voice of the Black Knight Football Team of Army and Pete Medhurst calls games for all the ships at sea for the Navy Midshipmen. Their audience is truly worldwide as many of the alumni from both academies are serving in far flung locations across the globe. Their broadcasts are heard in military bases, aircraft carriers as well as the halls of the Pentagon. The Army Navy game has been a one-sided affair in recent years with Navy winning 13 games in a row. This year, the Mids are lead by Keenan Reynolds, who look for number 14. On the Army side, they are ready to begin a streak of their own, and you know what they say about streaks they are made to be broken. Lets go Off The Air with the Voices of Army and Navy Football. When a team goes from worst to first, it's an incredible run for everyone involved, especially the fans. To be able to bring that run to fans is a special treat that all broadcasters hope for before the season begins. Off The Air With Rich Herrera – Army’s Rich DeMarco
Many broadcasters have a special relationship with their audience. Many play by play men have famous and powerful fans and alumni that are passionate about their teams while others might have a national leader or two that hang on their every word in the fourth quarter. There might be a few that have such a huge audience that stretches from coast to coast, but few have men and women waking up in the middle of the night for kickoff in some far away land. There aren’t many that have a special collection of fans that follow Rich DeMarco’s broadcasts of the Army Black Knights. Every Saturday, Rich calls the action for Army Football for the fans of the USMA that includes the Army’s top brass and the men and women keeping our nation safe serving across the world. Army Football is special place for out nations best and brightest. While the Army football team battles each weekend to sing second, this is a small part of what their world is all about. Soon after they take off their football helmets, they will soon put on other helmets as their put themselves in harms way as the leaders of the US Army. They are special people and it takes a special broadcaster to call their games. Lets go off the air with Rich DeMarco the voice of Army Football. Off The Air With Rich Herrera – Golden State Warriors’ Tim Roye
Tim Roye is the radio voice of the World Champion Golden State Warriors. Getting a chance to call an NBA Championship for Roye was a well deserved honor after calling games for the Kings and Warriors through their lean years. Starting in minor league hockey, he worked his way up the ladder to the NBA. Tim and I both worked in the San Francisco Bay Area where the legendary Bill King was bigger than life and a huge influence to both Tim and I. We talk about Bill, the Warriors, when he knew he wanted to go into broadcasting, and so much more "Off The Air." Off The Air With Rich Herrera – Oklahoma’s Toby Rowland
College football stadiums are small nation states during Saturday's during the season. Like all nation states, there is a single voice that unites all its followers. In Norman, Oklahoma, that voice follows some pretty footsteps that include Walter Cronkite and Curt Gowdy. Five seasons ago, Bob Berry Sr. stepped away from the mic and Toby Rowland stepped into that very special roll of calling games for the Oklahoma Sooners. Rich met Toby years before working as a sideline reporter and he was impressive in his work and his friendly manner. His voice has become the soundtrack of fall football for Sooner fans near and far. Off The Air With Rich Herrera – Fox Sports’ Tim Brando
FOX Sports broadcaster Tim Brando joins us this week "Off The Air." For my money, Tim is the voice of college football. After years on ESPN and CBS, Tim is calling games on FOX Sports. Rich got a chance to cover the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana and one of the highlights was getting to meet Tim in his hometown during bowl week. He is one of the good guys in broadcasting and that's why when we started kicking around names of guests we wanted to have on the podcast Brando was one of the first names we put on the list. Off The Air With Rich Herrera – Howard David
Howard David is one of the most recognizable voices in broadcasting. Having called games for the Jets, the Dolphins, and nationally on Monday Night Football, I was lucky enough to work with him as a sideline reporter for Sports USA’s NFL doubleheader for a few years. He has called games in the NBA for the Boston Celtics and done everything else under the sun including sports talk and calling the World Series of Poker on Sirius XM. Traveling around the country, there isn’t a city press box in America where he doesn’t know someone. That’s why I am happy to have Howard David on this weeks podcast.
