I have plenty of excuses for not having a proper podcast episode done for this week, but let's go with this one: New Century is a great audio drama series and I haven't given it a signal boost in a while. And since I became a big enough fan to actually wind up playing a character or two in it, it seems like this was overdue. So prepare yourself for a cascading torrent of plugs. (I'll spare you the fanboy gushing for now) If you're unsure where to start, there's now an introductory episode giving overviews of the first phase of stories in the series. The current and (so far) funniest story in New Century, The Princess Thieves, is still in-progress and available to listen to for free on the New Century podcast feed, which can be found by clicking that link or searching for New Century on iTunes. If you've never listened before, it's a pretty good place to start. The Cartographer's Handbook, Secret Rooms, Tiger's Eye, and Arlington have all been completed and can be found as audiobooks on Band Camp. The first three are also out as eBooks on Amazon (for all you weirdos who like to look at words with your eyes), with Arlington due to be released soon. If an industry professional told me that the dying medium of terrestrial talk radio is being saved single-handedly by the guys of The Free Beer And Hot Wings Morning Show, I would absolutely believe them. If that professional instead told me they are single-handedly killing radio, I'd believe that too. Eternally cursed with silly names and a tricky format, Free Beer, Hot Wings, and the rest of their crew manage to bring a surprising level of talent and self-awareness to a genre that is sorely aching for more of both. I'm a fan, if you couldn't tell. After one of their recent live shows, I got the chance to talk to Greg (Free Beer), Chris (Hot Wings), and Steve for a few minutes. The questions I asked are a bit too inside for newcomers to the show to appreciate, but it was at least fun for me, and isn't that really all that matters with podcasting anyway? I think I finally figured it out. Just like the section titled The Shark having a shark that died in the very next chapter, the whole big scary orca premise was a total bait-and-switch. The titular orca is actually the hero of this book, and Jack Campbell is the monster. It's kind of like Moby Dick if Moby Dick was much smaller scale, and the book lacked a moral center, a sense of tension, a straightforward well-crafted plot, fascinating characters, or literary quality of any kind. Hey, at least Jack's not actively thinking about sex with his sister anymore, right? Maybe this is the start of an interesting character arc.
