Hans Brinker / Roddy Sings

Drawing depicting Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, by Dodge Stahl. Date unknown. Hello everyone! Today’s episode is a radio production featuring Roddy McDowall and Dean Stockwell. The programme which Roddy and Dean both appeared on in 1952, was “Hans Brinker” and it was produced by Family Theatre. Roddy narrated the production while Dean starred as the lead role of Hans. This is a favorite production of mine, not only because of Roddy’s beautiful narrative skills, but also because of Dean’s performance. Dean has always been very dear to me, and his friendship with Roddy has always been something that has given me immense joy. Hearing them work together in the same production is sheer delight for me and I hope you will all enjoy this radio production as much as I do. Following the Radio Programme, you will be treated to a musical interlude, where Roddy can be heard beautifully singing some songs which were recorded as part of the Lerner and Lowe tribute album in the 1960s. Featured in these recordings are Roddy’s other dear friend, Nancy Walker (Of McMillan and Wife fame) and popular recording artist of the 60s pop generation, Blossom Dearie. Her sweet gentle vocals really mesh beautifully with Roddy’s similar timbre, and their song “this is my holiday” is one of my very favorites. I hope you enjoy this episode of our podcast. Happy Belated Birthday to Dean Stockwell! Roddy and Dean Promo Shot for Compulsion on Broadway (1957)
