NMC028 Tips for Visiting a Boat
Recorded: July 30, 2016 Location: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Subject: Tips for people visiting a loved one on a boat and tips for people who live on a boat when their loved ones are visiting. Hello friends! For me, the biggest downside of moving onto a boat—or being a traveling family in any form—is that you have to leave behind so many people you love. So, if you are anything like me, you invite those loved ones to visit every time you talk to them. Meanwhile, if you are one of those landlubbers whose loved one lives on a boat, you are either really motivated by these constant invites or finally so worn down by them that you relented and have agreed to visit. Either way, if you have a trip scheduled to visit boat friends you are probably filled with concerns and questions about what to expect. This episode will help. At least, I hope it will. My longtime listeners know that New Mexi-Castaways audio podcast is what I like to call, “Rosa Linda’s Ramblings,” so this isn’t a polished, planned “Top 10” list or anything like that. Just some personal advice I would have liked to hear if I were about to spend some time on a friend’s boat. Have a great week and be well everyone! Lots of love, Rosa Linda P.S. NMC026 Live Aboard Gymnastics
Recorded: July 22, 2016 Location: West Palm Beach, Florida Subject: What about gymnastics? Looking for creative ways for our daughter to continue her beloved sport while living on a boat. Hello friends! This week’s episode is a continuation of last week’s conversation from July 2016 as we were trying to find a way to help keep Ahava’s gymnastics dreams alive while living on a boat. I firmly believe, “where there’s a will, there’s a way,” and this episode is a peek into my process of figuring out creative ways to make things work. Many of these ideas did not pan out—like buying and transporting gymnastics equipment to the Bahamas—but we did find ways to support her in her sport for several more years to come despite the challenges. There will be plenty more on her gymnastics journey in future episodes, but for now consider this simply an auditory snapshot of a moment in that adventure. I hope this finds you well and in a place where creative solutions are coming to you when you need them most. Thanks for supporting this show and sharing in our journey! Be well everyone! NMC025 Sea Sickness and Gymnastics
Recorded: July 17, 2016 Location: West Palm Beach, Florida Subject: Friends visiting, brainstorming solutions for our gymnast and dreaming of the Bahamas. Hello friends! This week’s episode takes us back to July 2016, just a few weeks into our liveaboard adventure aboard the s/v Dawn Treader. First, we had a wonderful visit from some Bahamian friends who we first met on our favorite island of Hope Town in the Abacos when we lived on our first boat, Hakuna Matata. Sadly, there was some sea sickness on that visit but I think everyone enjoyed themselves anyway. I also share some brainstorming ideas about gymnastics as that was a hot topic for our family back then. Our daughter, Ahava, was a competitive gymnast and finding creative ways to help her continue her sport was always on the agenda. Looking back, I am amazed at how we managed to support her and still pursue so many great adventures along the way. Have a great week everyone! Lots of love, Rosa Linda P.S. NMC024 Three Weeks Aboard
Recorded: July 15, 2016 Location: West Palm Beach, Florida Subject:  Generator maintenance, video production work and figuring out the future of my business after moving aboard s/v Dawn Treader. Hello friends! What do you want to spend your time doing? How can you create a balance between the work you enjoy and the family you love? What will the next chapter look like? If you are like me, you have been spending a lot of time during this Covid-19 global pandemic wrestling with questions like this. Where do we go from here? How do we use this awful situation as a chance to shed the things that don’t work in our lives anymore and to set ourselves up for something better in the future? As I listened to this week’s episode, I realized I was wrestling with a lot of the same questions back then. I was burned out in my business and then hit a big reset button by moving onto a boat. That forced me to shed so many things to make way for the new, amazing life that was just beyond the horizon. I hope you are finding ways to set yourself up for the future you truly want, even if the present situation is not ideal. May this time of discomfort lead you to more of all that you love in your business and your life very, very soon. Be well, my friends! Lots of love, Rosa Linda P.S. NMC023 Deck of Dawn Treader
Recorded: July 11, 2016 Location: Riviera Beach, Florida Subject: Meeting my new nephew, enjoying more visitors, re-KonMari-ing, and special time with my daughter Ahava. Hello friends! First, let me just say THANK YOU! This is New Mexi-Castaways’ 23rd episode and it has been a joy for me to be able to share these episodes with all of you. This week we continue our trip back to July 2016 just a month after my family moved onto the sailing catamaran s/v Dawn Treader. From the time we left our home in New Mexico and started our liveaboard lives in Florida, we had had a steady stream of visitors. Anyone who knows me knows how happy that makes me. Listening back to this episode now (in December 2020) I am struck by how easy our movements were back then. We had a new nephew in North Carolina, so we drove up to meet him and then my daughter and I just hopped on a train back to Florida. Easy-peasy! I hope this episode brings you fond memories of family visits without masks and times when we enjoyed the freedom of movement. Fingers crossed that we will be there again in the not-too-distant future. Thanks for listening. Be well, my friends! Lots of love, Rosa Linda P.S. NMC022 Two Weeks Aboard Dawn Treader
Recorded: June 22, 2016 Location: Riviera Beach, Florida Subject: New Puppy updates, visitors and general life aboard s/v Dawn Treader after two weeks. Hello friends! Chronologically, this episode was recorded just a day after the one posted here on New Mexi-Castaways last week. But when you live on a boat a lot can happen in a day. At the time of this posting, I am feeling thankful that I recorded these podcasts back when life was “normal” (yes, I know we are generally “abnormal” because we live on a boat). These recordings were from 2016, two weeks after we moved onto the sailing catamaran, s/v Dawn Treader. Back in those lovely, pre-Covid times, when we could have family fly to wherever we were and spend time enjoying each other, face-to-face. I miss that so much. Wherever you are, I hope you have people you love that you are staying connected to right now. I am so grateful for the chance to connect with all of you, even if only virtually. Be well, my friends! NMC020 Driving to Florida
Recorded: June 14, 2016 Location: On the Road: Alabama & Florida Subject: Driving across country to move onto the boat. Hello friends! Okay, I am not going to lie. Sometimes I wonder why the heck I have been working on this podcast for so long. I started recording episodes more than 5 years ago, before moving onto the s/v Dawn Treader was even on our family’s radar. About 3 years ago, I hired an editor to help me edit the recordings into iTunes and Stitcher-worthy episodes. Over the past several years I have been working with a team of people to refine the website and the posting process, to create transcripts and show notes, and to do so many other tasks related to this podcast. Throughout this process—like any creative type, I suppose—I frequently find myself filled with doubt over the value of what I am putting out into the world. But then, something suddenly breaks through the darkness of my own self-judgement and I am reminded of the light. For me, this episode is that light breaking through. Unlike most episodes here on New Mexi-Castaways which are recordings of my own voice as I process whatever is going on around me (which I affectionately refer to as, “Rosa Linda’s Ramblings”), this episode has several voices, as I interview my kids and our nanny (Miss Linda) while we drive across country. These recordings were done in Alabama and Florida from our very crowded Ford Expedition. This will be the first time you will hear from the kids about what they think of this adventure of moving onto a boat. As is frequently the case on this on-the-go-podcast, the audio quality isn’t perfect, but I hope it will still bring a smile as we finally make the move from New Mexicast to New Mexi-Castaways. Have a great week everyone! Lots of love, Rosa Linda P.S. NMC019 Spa Day and KonMari
Recorded: June 4, 2016 Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico Subject: Holding space for each family member’s needs during the KonMari process. Last minute ladies’ spa day before leaving New Mexico to to move onto a boat. Hello friends! If you have followed our journey over the past several episodes you know that the KonMari process, based on Marie Kondo’s book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” played a huge role in our family’s preparations to move from our New Mexico home to the s/v Dawn Treader sailing catamaran. While it was transformative to go through that KonMari process, it was especially so as we worked through that emotional roller coaster as a family. In this week’s episode I share a bit more about what it was like to do KonMari with my kids and husband. It is hard to believe, but next week’s episode will be the actual move from New Mexico as we hit the road (in a very crowded Ford Expedition!) for Florida. Have a great week everyone! NMC018 Final Days of Landlocked Life
Recorded: May 23, 2016 Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico Subject: Our last few weeks in our New Mexico home. Finishing KonMari. Preparing to drive to boat in Florida. Hello friends! If you are new to this podcast there are a few things you should know about it: The episodes I am posting now were recorded in 2016 as my family prepared to leave New Mexico to move onto a boat. The system we used to downsize our home is called, “KonMari” based on Marie Kondo’s book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” This podcast is my sounding board which I frequently refer to as, “Rosa Linda’s Ramblings.” This podcast is not for everyone and that’s okay. I mention this because this week’s episode goes a bit deeper into the darker places I struggle with in my life. At the time of this writing (a few days before Halloween 2020) I am finding myself feeling a lot like I did back then with a lot of uncertainty and trying to shed the things that no longer spark joy from my life. This is an excerpt from the episode which reminds me a lot of what is happening in the world now as we do what we can to strengthen our foundations and shift to a brighter future. Here’s what I said back then: “I will tell you that this KonMari process forces you to shine a light on the areas that do not work or the areas that you feel shame or embarrassment or guilt around. New Mexicast has been one of those areas for me. Not the whole thing, but the state of my website, the state of a lot of how I have managed the actual business because I just feel like it never lived up to its full potential. And as I’m going through this KonMari system, I’m starting to see that it’s time to really shore up the things that do matter.” If you replace “KonMari” with “2020,” the overall point of the quote still rings true: “I will tell you that 2020 forces you to shine a light on the areas that do not work or the areas that you feel shame or embarrassment or guilt around. … And as I’m going through 2020, I’m starting to see that it’s time to really shore up the things that do matter.” In other words, if we use this time to overhaul our lives with a focus on what really matters, we will find the things that spark joy are all that’s left when we step back into the light on the other end of this unbelievably challenging time in our lives. Be good to yourself this week! Together we will get through these trying times. Lots of love, Rosa Linda P.S.
