Today is another episode too many years in the making from someone who was a New Geechee FIRST! This young lady was the first person to contribute to the New Geechee blog with “Healing the Health of Southern Hospitality”, back in May of 2018!  Meet boss mom extraordinaire Georgina Dukes, affectionately known as JOY, who is showing the world how to balance motherhood, career, and self care!  Born and raised in the great town of Monetta, SC, Joy learned early and quickly about how to survive the negativity of the world and the value of being a member of the community! It's the holiday season, and I wanted to bring a special episode to us all as this year has been one for the books. We’re grieving!!! And I want to remind you that in your grief, seen and unseen, that you are not alone. Today you all will get the chance to hear from television host and media personality Ms. Charity Bailey. You may have seen her smile on RightThisMinute as she tells stories that move the culture forward, bringing her personality and unapologetic black womanhood to the world.  What you don’t know, is behind that smile, is a woman grieving the loss of the father whose journey to television has been far from conventional. We’re back! With another episode of “Hometown Heroes” and listen—what a way to close out 2020! Earlier this summer, I was introduced to a man who Ive heard of many years ago, and BAM! #HometownHeroes Comes a little closer to my hometown with a stop in the great city of Summerville, SC. Today we meet hometown hero Donovan Williams, a young man who I’ve respected and admited since our early days of summer camp in 2006. K. Donovan Willams is a proud husband, father, son and is the author of the conversation starting book titled Trajectory: Reflections of a Young Black Man from Summerville. Released in 2019, Trajectory takes us along for the journey of a lifetime through Donovan’s experiences with himself, his loved ones, and most importantly, God. This August, his FIRST children’s book “How Angels Are Made” - a tribute in honor of his late great mother who left the earthly realm four years ago, is being released. Two days after her abrupt passing, Bryson pulled out his pen and wrote this  book  in its entirety and didn’t revisit it until 2020. Today Bryson is going to share what gave him the courage to finally get the book into the world, why it’s so important to get a book about grief, loss, and healing into the world for children and their  families, especially black families, and the journey of raising $8k on kickstarter back in may! ! I want to open this episode with a quote, “A lot of times people think, someday my path will start. But whatever is happening in this moment is the path. You’re already on it”. This comes from Marianne Williamson and is an excerpt from Oprah’s latest book, “The Path Made Clear”.  I skimmed this book and landed on this quote which I felt was very timely. Everything happening right now is “the path” and I hope you all believe that all the things happening are happening FOR you and not TO you! All of it has to happen in order to get you where you want to go. Today, we get to take a walk down the path and the life of Diamonde Williamson- Chief Video Strategist and Executive Producer at Third + Wonder Productions. The world as we know it  has literally flipped upside over the last week. As Im sure you are following the news, one of the things that Ive been seeing so prevalently is the sense of fear that people have. Women’s History Month is upon us and I’m happy to share the power of super womanhood! To be a woman is to be EVERYTHING- we come in many shapes, sizes, we conquer different paths, but being a woman is being filled with evolution! Sometimes the super womanhood of being a woman comes with learning some big lessons, and today we meet La’Vista Jones- author, self care coach & systems strategist of 14 years at ThirtyOne Marketplace and the host/community builder of Boss Talk PHX!  Her journey takes us from the small town of Marion, Ohio being raised with her grandmother with dreams of being a family woman…. to her jump into full time entrepreneurship after a serious episode of burnout, following her great climb to leadership in corporate as an AVP before the age of 30!   Like all women, she’s a genius and I’m proud of all that La’Vista has conquered!   La’Vista is doing everything in her power to make sure no one ever has to experience burnout! It’s the second week of Black History Month and we’re taking our conversation from romantic love to one YMPs love for his hometown- Wilmington, North Carolina- aka Port City!  Meet Cedric Harrison-  a father, a leader, the Founder of Support the Port Foundation, a non profit organization that aims to enhance, cultivate and provide a renewed sense of community ownership and excellence for underserved communities. This would then lead him to become a TedX speaker, the first recipient of the Z Smith Reynolds All4NC Fellowship, and so much more!  I had to find out what inspired Cedric to leave it all behind to start Support the Port….. It’s storytime! Cedric takes us on the voyage from poverty to empowerment, as he takes some of the most defining moments of his youth and embarks on a journey towards fulfillment! Welcome to February- the month of LOVE and Black History! We will travel across the diaspora and document the journeys of people across even more cultural borders.
