Ep83: Living Life with No Excuses w/ Georgina 'Joy' Dukes of JoyofRomeo.com
Today is another episode too many years in the making from someone who was a New Geechee FIRST! This young lady was the first person to contribute to the New Geechee blog with “Healing the Health of Southern Hospitality”, back in May of 2018!  Meet boss mom extraordinaire Georgina Dukes, affectionately known as JOY, who is showing the world how to balance motherhood, career, and self care!  Born and raised in the great town of Monetta, SC, Joy learned early and quickly about how to survive the negativity of the world and the value of being a member of the community! Her resilience story begins as early as elementary school and only continues to strengthen when college puts her face to face with events that would change her life, forever!  An incredible mom of a brilliant and fearless black boy named Romeo, her ultimate goal in life is to HEAL, and she is doing just that through her blog JoyofRomeo.com, which has gone VIRAL this year due to a entry titled “ When My Beautiful Black Boy Grows from Cute to a Threat”, her new collaboration with AllMomDoes blog,  her full time career working with UniteUS, and her new business JoyofRomeo Transportation, which employs those in her hometown of Monetta, SC. Talk about a boss?  All of this before the age of 30! I'm partial to Joy’s illumination because she’s a Delta, more specifically my neo, who I saw outwork us all and live out the “No excuses mentality”, and she’s a Taurus, so there’s that!  Oh Joy--- you make it all look easy but i know that you worked for every single thing you earned and its been beautiful watching you continue to grow these last 10 years! Ep82: Just Keep Living w/ Charity Bailey, Media Personality & Host of 'Girl, We Need To Talk'
It's the holiday season, and I wanted to bring a special episode to us all as this year has been one for the books. We’re grieving!!! And I want to remind you that in your grief, seen and unseen, that you are not alone. Today you all will get the chance to hear from television host and media personality Ms. Charity Bailey. You may have seen her smile on RightThisMinute as she tells stories that move the culture forward, bringing her personality and unapologetic black womanhood to the world.  What you don’t know, is behind that smile, is a woman grieving the loss of the father whose journey to television has been far from conventional. And that’s what we’re discussing today, her YMP journey as a journalist whose gone from CA to NC to AZ,  and how she turned her pain into passion with her new web series on Youtube “Girl, We Need To Talk” In knowing Charity for the last 3 years, one thing sticks out most to me, something my grandmother always reminded me of—KEEP LIVING.  Life is one hell of a ride that if we are willing to take, which will give us beautiful and not so beautiful experiences to learn from. Never stop learning YMPs. Never stop pursuing your dreams. Never let life take you all the way down.  In the words of a great songwriter Donnie McClurkin, we fall down, but we get up. Ep79: The Road to Riches w/ K. Donovan Williams, Author of Trajectory
#HometownHeroes Comes a little closer to my hometown with a stop in the great city of Summerville, SC. Today we meet hometown hero Donovan Williams, a young man who I’ve respected and admited since our early days of summer camp in 2006. K. Donovan Willams is a proud husband, father, son and is the author of the conversation starting book titled Trajectory: Reflections of a Young Black Man from Summerville. Released in 2019, Trajectory takes us along for the journey of a lifetime through Donovan’s experiences with himself, his loved ones, and most importantly, God. A work complete with variety and vulnerability, this piece of work captures your heart from cover to cover. Donovan wants to make an impact- and as I shared earlier, his life is a living example of how one should continue to evolve, continue to grow, and continue to meet challenge with courage. I especially enjoy our conversation, two black kids from the 843, now two Clemson graduates from the lowcountry, around womanhood and manhood, the lessons of the lowcountry, and how God is at the center of it all- yall know I’m not afraid or ashamed to talk about God here!  This book is timeless! And it’s one of those books you gift to your loved ones, in hopes that it will open up conversations that draw you closer to one another. You can follow Donovan @kdonovanwilliams and I advise that you head over to Amazon now to grab your copy today. Donovan- my guy…. you’ve always been a shining star in my eyes! It has been a time to think about life and  grow to understand that very question I’ve been asking all of my guests, “Where have you been and where are you headed?” I'm here to remind you the journey is most important. When I was in high school, my favorite quote hit me like a ton of bricks. “Success is not a destination, it's a journey”. There is never a moment you 'make it'. There is never going to be a moment you say 'it is done' before death. Your journey is filled with its own twists and turns, to help define more of you! In all of the the adjustments she has had to make coming to America, she gained her strengths that make her a real world boss who knows the value of working harder than everybody else.  From the top ranked business college at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, to working for top global company and landing in the desert, Joseline dives head first into her first startup company and learns major lessons that places her in the position to make the hardest decision of her life!  Through Joseline’s journey, however, we can put the pieces together. Ep72: You Are ENOUGH w/ Diamonde Williamson of Third + Wonder Production House
I want to open this episode with a quote, “A lot of times people think, someday my path will start. But whatever is happening in this moment is the path. You’re already on it”. This comes from Marianne Williamson and is an excerpt from Oprah’s latest book, “The Path Made Clear”.  I skimmed this book and landed on this quote which I felt was very timely. Everything happening right now is “the path” and I hope you all believe that all the things happening are happening FOR you and not TO you! All of it has to happen in order to get you where you want to go. Today, we get to take a walk down the path and the life of Diamonde Williamson- Chief Video Strategist and Executive Producer at Third + Wonder Productions. Diamonde has spent her entire career  exploring the ways in which she can elevate the narratives of women, specifically women of color and has done a damn good job doing so! She’s worked on some of your favorite shows, with some of your favorite companies, and has been on Youtube since 2013, with a new vibrant show exploring the lives of black women titled, “The World is Ours”. But the truth is you don’t get to celebrate big wins like working for OWN on the hit show Iyanla Fix My Life, or becoming the founder of a major startup “Blossom”, without having some mountains to conquer. And for Diamonde, one of the biggest challenges was ensuring that along the way, she was becoming the courageous woman she knew she was always destined to become.  We get to talk about living life across the country, her therapy journey, the power of manifestation and having a North Star, and Diamonde’s desire to help as many people share their messages through video content, one of the fastest growing communication methods.  I had to talk to Diamonde, especially during this world reset, to find out the drive behind her grind and where she see’s herself over the next decade! She has an incredible masterclass underway to continue to help others with video production and I can’t wait for it! (Yes! I invested in it and myself #supportblackwomen)   Here’s the courageous journey of where Diamonde has been and where she is headed!  Connect with all things Diamonde at therealdiamonde.com Find Diamonde on social! Ep70: The Permission to Live Abundantly w/ Janice Burch of Work Soul Flow
The world as we know it  has literally flipped upside over the last week. As Im sure you are following the news, one of the things that Ive been seeing so prevalently is the sense of fear that people have. I would never tell you not to be informed, not to take precautions, but I’ll be the first realist to tell you that we attract what we believe. So I want to encourage you all to breathe, be calm, filter through the noise and take note to the facts, and let’s get through this time in confidence that we’ll actually get through and things will be ok. Today’s episode is right on time as we chat with the fearless Janice Burch. Janice owns Work Soul Flow where as a coach she help creative women solopreneurs become better at receiving abundance. More clients, more attempting, more income.  What makes Janice qualified for this? Well I think when you listen to Janice’s story from being a self assured kid to a young adult attempting to the live the life that the outside world expected of her, to finally taking control of her life after having a life altering event in college and moving forward in her career.  Janice takes us through her climb in corporate that helped her refine her purpose and help others dream BIGGER, landing her to full time entrepreneurship.  As I mentioned, attraction in our lives is so important and I believe that Janice and I met from the simple truth! I am more than attracted to her belief in self, that nothing in her life was by mistake, and that literally anything is possible.  I hope that this conversation ignites your dreams even in the midst of what is happening, that you will be confident in who you are and shed the expectations of others, and decide to give yourself permission to do what you want to do… I think I’ll start saying #BelikeJanice because Im more than inspired by how she lives her life!  Here’s the fearless story of where Janice has been and where she is headed….. Ep69: Paid the Cost to be the SELF CARE Boss w/ La'Vista Jones of ThirtyOneMarketplace & BossTalkPHX
Women’s History Month is upon us and I’m happy to share the power of super womanhood! To be a woman is to be EVERYTHING- we come in many shapes, sizes, we conquer different paths, but being a woman is being filled with evolution! Sometimes the super womanhood of being a woman comes with learning some big lessons, and today we meet La’Vista Jones- author, self care coach & systems strategist of 14 years at ThirtyOne Marketplace and the host/community builder of Boss Talk PHX!  Her journey takes us from the small town of Marion, Ohio being raised with her grandmother with dreams of being a family woman…. to her jump into full time entrepreneurship after a serious episode of burnout, following her great climb to leadership in corporate as an AVP before the age of 30!   Like all women, she’s a genius and I’m proud of all that La’Vista has conquered!   La’Vista is doing everything in her power to make sure no one ever has to experience burnout! As we talk about her thoughts, feelings, and breakthroughs, we get to see La’Vista evolve more into her true self and understand the importance of boundaries and taking care of herself… a journey many of us will undertake.  La’Vista essentially has committed her life to making sure women are putting the ‘self’ back in self-care, and I had to sit her down to get some insights on the mindsets that make us forget that key word as women and why she went DEEPER in helping us connect to the real stories of other women through her Boss TALK community. Ep68: Becoming Port City History w/ Cedric Harrison of Support The Port
It’s the second week of Black History Month and we’re taking our conversation from romantic love to one YMPs love for his hometown- Wilmington, North Carolina- aka Port City!  Meet Cedric Harrison-  a father, a leader, the Founder of Support the Port Foundation, a non profit organization that aims to enhance, cultivate and provide a renewed sense of community ownership and excellence for underserved communities. This would then lead him to become a TedX speaker, the first recipient of the Z Smith Reynolds All4NC Fellowship, and so much more!  I had to find out what inspired Cedric to leave it all behind to start Support the Port….. It’s storytime! Cedric takes us on the voyage from poverty to empowerment, as he takes some of the most defining moments of his youth and embarks on a journey towards fulfillment! You know, a life that he could trulyyyyy say he loved!  From death threats to theatre, from college to unemployment, and from DC to Atlanta and back to Wilmington, Cedric’s story is met with many challenges where he has  to make decision after decision after decision….  What ultimately would guide him began with a local tour that educated him of the POWER that was Wilmington pre 1898… and he tells us the story of the ONLY over throw of government that happened in United States history- right in Wilmington NC!  This conversation is not only educational but serves as reminder that the challenges we face can shape the way we see and can impact the world!  Here’s the triumphant story of where Cedric has been and where he is headed… Follow Cedric Harrison and Support the Port at Supporttheport.org Donate to Support the Port: https://secure.squarespace.com/checkout/donate?donatePageId=5876e5231b10e3abff2fda83 Shop Support the Port Merch: https://www.supporttheport.com/support Find Cedric and Support The Port on socialInstagram: www.instagram.com/supportcitycedInstagram: www.instagram.com/supporttheport Thanks to our sponsor Audible!
