Chantée is joined by Dr. Sylvea Hollis to discuss how sense of both self and community has served her!________________________Assistant Professor Sylvea Hollis earned a Ph.D. in US History, with a concentration in African American History from the University of Iowa. As a graduate student she developed and taught her own courses in African American History and created civically engaged programming with the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies. Her dissertation, “Race, Capitalism, and Social Welfare after the Civil War, 1864-1911: The CKOP and the COC,” is a cultural history. It examines the African American fraternal association, the Colored Knights of Pythias and their women’s auxiliary, the Court of Calanthe. Before coming to Montgomery College in the fall of 2020, Dr. Hollis was an NPS-Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow and taught courses in gender and sexuality in the American Studies Department at The George Washington University. She earned a MA in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program (SUNY-Oneonta) and has extensive experience in the museum field, working with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, National Museum of American History, and American Alliance of Museum. ________________________SHOW NOTES + LINKS:We are grateful to Dr. Hollis for joining us. Dr. Joni totally embraces her zest for life and an overwhelming passion to support the healthcare needs of children, adults and families. She works directly with parents, school officials and medical providers to help them understand their roles as identifiers of and support systems for children who are struggling with learning, attention, mood, behavior and social issues.  She offers health consultations to direct parents where to start in their assessment journey, provide care coordination once a diagnosis has been given to help to access community support services and engage in thorough medication and treatment adherence consultations to ensure that treatment is truly effective.  After completing a Health and Wellness Coaching program at Georgetown University, she is also a certified Empowerment Strategist (Coach) and works to help teenagers and adults to make lasting lifestyle changes, establish balance in their lives and advocate for opportunities in school and in the workplace. Over that time, Chantée has worked with cross functional teams and senior leaders to provide program management, mentorship, assessments, and coaching services. She has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Prince George’s Community College for over 5 years as a Math instructor for GED students. She also served as an Adjunct Professor at George Mason University teaching freshman how to transition to life on campus. As a certified facilitator, Chantée has developed and delivered various forms of training and engagements for a range of multileveled staff and senior government officials. Chantée earned her Master’s of Business Administration from Webster University.
