MDP 22 - Who Am I Responsible to Serve
We started to discuss this a few weeks ago... Today we really flesh this out a lot more. Who are we responsible to serve? Those who are around us, or should we sere the global community first? We are sorry that the last minute or so of the podcast was cut off... Mostly you just missed us not knowing how to end the podcast. Ha.

MDP 21 - Faithful Fasting
What does Fast Sunday look like at your house? In this episode we discuss what the purpose of the fast is and how we implement the doctrine of the fast in our own lives. Mat reveals his 'Fast Saturday System' that may or may not align with the spirit of the law. We also discuss our thoughts of Fast and Testimony Meetings. Oh, and we dream about what church could be like if it only lasted two hours...

MDP 20 - Reaching Out to the Poor and Needy and Random Ramblings
Tonight we reprise our Facebook Fatigue discussion in light of the tragedy in Paris. We also learn that Mark is only using Jeff and Mat to get his updates on what is going on in the world. We discuss, albeit probably in a shallow way, the implications that the Paris attacks might have on religion in general. Then we get to discussing how we can reach out to the poor, needy, and the lonely as was shared recently by Elder Ballard here.

MDP 19 - Facebook Fatigue
I know, I know... it's ironic, or maybe even hypocritical, that one of the places that we will make the link to this podcast available is Facebook. It means that we are part of the problem and are adding to the abundance of opinions already out there about the Church's recent policy change. But, to be fair, we don't spend much time talking about the policy. We mostly talk about the frustration that we have felt over the 'blowing up' of our feeds. This podcast was recorded before the tragic attacks in Paris, which is another incident that has 'blown up' social media. I, personally, wonder if our conversation would have been different...

How Do We Teach Gratitude To Our Kids?
We are back, after a week long break (due to Mat and Mark being in San Diego). Today we talk about how we can teach the practice of gratitude to our children. It is easy for them to focus on the negative, or to think that life sucks. Through a few stories about how we practice gratitude in our own lives, we glean a few ideas on how we can help our children be more grateful. We also give a few ideas for family home evening activities. Believe it or not, Jeff and Mark were able to connect these two ideas and come up with some gratitude activities that you can do for FHE.

MDP 17 - Are People Mostly Good or Bad - Hel 5:2
Tonight Mat and Mark begin by answering a question that Mat asked his kids for family home evening. The question was based on the scripture Helaman 5:2. Mat asked his kids if they thought that there were more people who chose good in our society, or more people who chose evil. The Mormon Dads begin their discussion by answering that question and then get off topic a little with a discussion about the natural man and how we can be good, even if we make mistakes.

MDP 16 - When Those Close To You Leave the Church
As I've grown older and life has, well, just happened to people, there have been many people who are close to me that have decided to leave the Church for various reasons. Today, Jeff and I discuss what some of the challenges that come into relationships when that happens. We also give our opinions on how we can best support those whom we care about that have chosen a different path. We also discuss our thoughts on how we can help our children understand that people make different choices than we do in our families.

MDP 15 - Conference Rewind
It was an eventful conference last weekend. Tonight we discuss the implications of a few of our favorite addresses from General Conference. We also discuss our thoughts on the three new apostles and reminisce about how much we loved Elders Packer, Perry, and Scott.

MDP 14 - Helping the Youth Programs of the Church Help Us Raise Good Kids
I'm trying to get this podcast posted early on Saturday October 3rd, so that you don't have to make the difficult decision of what to listen to, the podcast or General Conference. If you listen to this before Conference, you will get to hear Mat's prediction for who the 3 new apostles will be. If you listen after Conference you will see if Mat was right or wrong. The real topic of conversation today is the youth programs of the church and how they support us in raising healthy, productive, and spiritually mature kids. We also talk about how it would be a mistake to rely completely on the scouts, for instance, to get your son his Eagle Scout Award... Or the Queens Venturer Award for our Canadian listeners. We talk Young Women's program and Youth Conferences, with Mat sharing how he first met his wife at youth conference... but didn't remember her for another 4 years.

MDP 13 - The Importance of Family Traditions
This turned out to be quite a fascinating discussion. At first we didn't have a lot of traditions to talk about, but then things really got rolling. We discuss what some of our own traditions are and why traditions are important. During the episode, Mat has an epiphany that isn't particularly impressive to Mark or Jeff. Let us know if you connect with the epiphany like Mat did.

MDP 12 - Guilt and Shame
Are guilt and shame good? Are they the same? How do they impact your decisions after making a mistake? How do we teach our kids to see guilt in a healthy way? These questions are the topic of discussion in today's episode of The MDP. The initial conversation is very loosely tied to a podcast that Mat listened to and shared with Jeff and Mark. You can listen to that podcast here. It is an interview with Brene Brown and Tim Ferris. It is worht the listen, and as said before, is loosely tied to our dicussion today. We apologize for the audio quality. Each of us take turns 'going robotic' for some reason. If you listent through the robot voice, there are some really thoughtful insights from everyone.

MDP 11 - Is It Hard To Be A Mormon Man
On the heels of our last podcast about what it takes to be a success as a father, I read an article titles Why It's Tough To Be A Mormon Man. It is a list of ten things that make it hard to be a mormon man these days. The original intention was to get through all of the ten points but, in staying true to form, we talked so muc that we were only able to get to three. We discussed the pressure to be the sole provider, balancing the pressures of having a career and church callings, and if it is cool to cry. There is some lively discussion and disagreement in today's episode. Thanks for listening and please feel free to leave a comment on our blog or on itunes or stitcher. Thanks again.

MDP 10 - What Makes For a Successful Mormon Dad
It is a bit premature for any of the Mormon Dads on the podcast to say that we are successes as fathers or priesthood holders. We can probably say that we are successful in the moment... but we wanted to talk about what it really means to be a successful dad in the LDS community. It is an interesting discussion, that might have as many different answers as there are people listening (thanks to our loyal listenters). In this episode you also learn about the reasons that Mat and Jeff both changed their minds about not serving missions and decided to go. In the end we share some decisions that can be made to help you along your quest to be a sucessful Mormon Dad.

MDP 9 - When You Notice That It Has Been A While Since You've Attended the Temple
For some reason we keep deciding on topics of being a mormon dad that we aren't very good at. Today we chatted about attending the temple. One of the overarching quesitons that we discussed was 'how often is regular?' You will have to tell us if we are just full of justifications, which is entirely possible, or if we are just three guys who are doing our best to keep the covenants that we have made with our Heavenly Father. We also touch on how the frequency of our temple attendance impacts our children's feelings and beliefs on how important the temple is.As always this is a genuine conversation laced with humor and hopefuly some powerful insights that will help you examine your temple attendance habits.Let us know what regular temple attendance means for you...

MDP 8 - The Role of Trials in Spiritual Progression
We all face trials in our lives. This episode may raise more questions than it gives answers about why trials are necessary. But this is an authentic conversation that comes from three different points of view and is shaped by the unique experiences of all three of the Mormon Dads on this episode. We also touch on how we can best prepare our kids for trials in their own lives. As before, there is a great discussion on the subject, but there may not be a ton of answers. This episode is well worth the listen though.

MDP 7 - What Should Member Missionary Work Look Like?

MDP 6 - Keeping Our Spiritual Vitality Alive
Sometimes as dads in the LDS Church we fall into just going through the motions. Tonight's discussion talks about how we can combat the spiritual apathy that can creep up on us. We also discuss how our wives and families help to keep us on the straight and narrow. How have you been able to keep your spiritual vitality alive.

MDP 5 - Insights Into Scripture Study
Today each of us shares our scripture study routines, personal and family. In full disclosure I should say that there is an elements of 'do what I say, not what I do' in this episode. But, we get points for being authentic, right? Some of the other topics that we touch on are: 11 year old scout camp. Is it OK to read your scriptures while the speakers are speaking in sacreament meeting? Mat's idea for making the Sabbath a delight. Thanks for listening.

MDP 4 - Introducing Jeff
Today we are introducing the podcast world to Jeff Shaw. He served with Mat in the Philadelphia, PA mission years ago. He lives in Canda and brings a great perspective to the podcast. Some of the topics that we talk about today are: Introducing Jeff Calling Why is today different than when we were kids? Are Trek, Book of Mormon Journey, etc. good for kids? Let us know if you have any questions or topics that you would like to talk to us about. you can email Mat at email@example.com Also, rate us and leave a comment on itunes or Stitcher.
