Ep 48: The money relationships we inherit with Johanna Lynn
Does life ever feel like a little bit of history repeating itself? So often we see similar challenges in money, relationships and other family issues continue from one generation to the next. Many people go through their entire lives without recognizing the deeper issues fueling their money challenges. According to my guest Johanna Lynn, your family lives on within you, think of it as your emotional inheritance. We talk about how this emotional inheritance can impact your relationship with money, and what we can do to release past events to develop a healthier future for ourselves and our children.   About the Guest: Johanna Lynn is fascinated by what parents share with their children, the invisible stuff passed along in our very DNA. Her superpower is listening like a detective to the facts of a client’s family history, the words they use to describe their challenges lead to begin to work offering up freedom, insight and new perspectives.   Our earliest experiences, while we don’t consciously remember them, have a profound influence on how we live our lives. Johanna works with what the body remembers and the knowledge that we are more than our own individual experiences. Ep 47: How to change your finances to become a SAHM with Stephanie Sims
So many families think they’re living the American Dream, until they want or need to make a change but can’t due to their finances. In the case of Stephanie Sims and her husband, they were living a great life and doing all the things they thought they should – like using their income to buy a bigger family home and new cars – until Stephanie wanted to stay home with her baby but couldn’t because of the family’s debt. About three years later and with two more babies, Stephanie and her husband had enough and decided to make drastic changes to the way they lived and used their money. Stephanie and I discuss how a budget and living below your means gives you the options you may want or need to raise your family on your terms.   About the Guest: Stephanie Sims is a boy mama x 4, foster parent, and a wife of 10+ years. She’s a Special Education teacher by trade but has left the classroom to raise her children and spread her message of hope and generational change to other mamas. In her work, Stephanie leans into 5 main topics: Faith, Finances, Health, Marriage & Mindset and believes in changing the seemingly insignificant choices we make each day to compound over time and break chains, tear down strongholds, and ultimately drive generational change.   Learn more about Stephanie’s work at: www.simsarrows.com IG @Legacy_through_motherhood (IG), FB @Legacy through Motherhood FB Group @The Legacy through Motherhood Community with Stephanie Sims (FB group)   About the Host Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Ep 46: Getting your legal ducks in a row for a small business or side-gig with Asia Marie Woods
Many small businesses don’t want to spend the money on legal work until they know their business is going to stick. But what if the business is a success beyond your expectations, and the legal work you’ve put off puts the very existence of your business at risk? That’s exactly what happened to my guest, Asia Marie Woods. After growing a successful business as an entrepreneur, she had to walk away from it all. She may have lost her first big deal in business, but she didn’t lose her spirit. Instead, she channeled it into law school and now in her work making sure that what happened to her business never happens to her clients, as well as in being an advocate for single mothers who are looking to improve their family’s financial future. In this episode, I talk with Asia about her experience of starting a business, going to law school as a single mom, how someone without legal knowledge can pick the right attorney for them, and now how she helps new business owners ensure they have their legal ducks in a row.   About the Guest: Asia Marie Woods, Esq. is an attorney for entrepreneurs who encourages her clients to go big, never play small, and to make sure all of their legal ducks are in a row. Asia Marie pairs her creative business strategies and law expertise to provide custom legal solutions for business owners. Asia Marie's goal is to make sure her clients are informed, empowered, and ready to take action.Asia Marie received her J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law; and received her bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University. Fun fact: She tried out for a professional women’s football team. Ep 45: How to choose the right financial advisor for your family with Gaea Verneris
I hear time and time again from women who are not comfortable with the world financial planning, but who want to learn. Research shows that despite growth in income by women in recent years, many remain less confident in their finances than men. Sometimes women still leave the financial planning activities for their families to their spouse, but it’s so important for both men and women, husbands and wives, to be involved in the financial planning for their families. Men and women often think about long term life plans differently, and the most successful family financial plans incorporate both.   In today’s episode, I’m talking with Gaea Verneris, Financial Advisor and Owner of Legacy One Financial about how she approaches her clients to ensure the goals of her female clients are incorporated into their family’s financial plans, the process of getting to know her clients, and questions individuals can ask advisors to determine if they’re the right advisor for them.   We also learn what a 529 savings plan can be used for, which is an area of focus for many families as they explore how to best save for their child’s education.   About the Guest: Gaea is a small-town girl, born and raised in the mountains of Twain Harte, CA. Always enjoying an outdoor adventure, she spent her summers climbing trees, bike riding, swimming and her winters on skis! She loves the mountains, however, her career brought her to Ventura County in 2006. After graduating from Sacramento State University with a degree in Digital Media, she embarked on her next journey and moved to sea. She started and grew the video department for Princess Cruises and lived on cruise ships on and off for the next six years. After setting up most of the fleet with video, the corporate office pulled her in to manage from shore in California. In 2009 she decided it was time for a career change and while doing some soul searching found Edward Jones. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that she would become a Financial Advisor, but she took a chance, got hired, passed her exams, opened an office in Carpinteria, CA and never looked back. She absolutely loves her career, and helping people realize their dreams is her passion. She believes financial planning involves more than the game of the stock market, and loves all of her clients and helping them pursue their goals. With nine years of industry experience at Edward Jones behind her, she decided she wanted greater flexibility to offer different solutions that better catered to her client’s needs and risk. This led to the creation of Legacy One Financial. Gaea is passionate about providing an experience that helps her clients live happier and healthier lives! She is excited for the opportunity to partner with LPL Financial, one of the leading financial services companies and one of the largest independent broker/dealers in the nation. She is also in some aspect partnered with other large consulting firms under the LPL umbrella, with offices across California. These partnerships afford Legacy One the ability to offer the best array of products for her clients. She is excited for the opportunity to meet and work with new individuals with her company, Legacy One Financial. Gaea and her husband Jay have an adorable 3-year-old girl named Bayzil, who keeps them on their toes and brings more joy to their world than they ever thought possible. As a family, they love to travel around the globe, see concerts and live music, go wine tasting, spend time with family and friends, give back to the community and live life to the fullest. Her own family life and time in this career has also taught her how to get her own financial well-being in check, and for that she is truly grateful. To learn more about Gaea and her work, visit: www.legacyonelife.com https://www.facebook.com/gaea.verneris/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/gaeaverneris/     About the Host: Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Ep 42: From career break to founder of an innovative health care startup with Janis Powers
So often mothers look at their career break as a significant negative to overcome when they look to return to the workforce. But in the case of Janis Powers, founder of the cutting edge start-up Longitudinal Health Care, it was so much more than that. By taking advantage of different developmental opportunities, Janis was able to return from her break not only with a fresh perspective on the industry in which she worked, but also with new skills that are serving her well now as founder and fundraiser for her company. Janis and I talk about the importance of exercising your brain while on career break, why you should do something you’re interested in unrelated to your kids, and how strategic volunteering can help launch your next career.   Check out Janis’ fictional story on professional motherhood, Mama’s Got a Brand New Job, and her nonfiction analysis of the American health care system, Health Care: Meet the American Dream.   About the Guest: Janis Powers is the CEO and Founder of Longitudinal Health Care, a start-up on a mission to eliminate health insurance. Today’s insurance model is based on spreading risk across multiple constituents in the health care ecosystem. Janis’ company thinks this model is flawed because there should be very little risk due to advancements in genetics and predictive analytics. Prior to Longitudinal, Janis worked as a health care strategy and operations consultant and became fixated on health care’s cost accounting problem. The electronic medical records that many providers use are really billing systems, not cost accounting systems. That means there’s a lack of understanding about how much goods and services delivered by providers actually cost. It’s an important reason why consumers can’t get their hands on good pricing information. Addressing this pricing issue is a critical component of Longitudinal’s business strategy. Prior to Longitudinal, Janis published the Amazon Bestselling book Health Care: Meet the American Dream. The book describes why the current health care system needs structural change and then lays out a “perfect world” model for how it could be. Check out articles, podcast interviews and videos on Janis’ Media page or listen to The Powers Report Podcast to get Janis’ unshackled, candid perspectives on health care. www.janispowers.com www.longitudinalhealthcare.com     About the Host Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Ep 41: How can we fix America’s health care problems? with Janis Powers
National health spending accounted for 17.7% of U.S. GDP, and is projected to grow to nearly 20% by 2028. Are Americans getting what they’re paying for? According to my guest this week, Janis Powers, they’re not. Janis is the founder and CEO of Longitudinal Health Care and host of The Powers Report Podcast, where listeners get her unshackled, candid perspectives on American health care. In this episode, Janis talks to us about how her company is trying to change the current costly health care model by incorporating more transparency and more personal responsibility, while reducing risk.   About the Guest: Janis Powers is the CEO and Founder of Longitudinal Health Care, a start-up on a mission to eliminate health insurance. Ep 40: Building your career strategy with Laurel Rutledge (Encore Episode)
This episode originally aired July 2, 2020. We hope you enjoy this encore episode of our interview with Laurel Rutledge. Too many of us have accepted the stress and misery that comes with our careers. If you’re unhappy in your professional life, but feel like you need to stick it out because you think “This is what it feels like to be successful,” this episode is for you. Our guest, HR and career strategist Laurel Rutledge, is on a mission to help more women get out of career misery and into a career path aligned with their values and skills. In this empowering episode, you’ll learn: Why we stay in jobs that are making us miserable How saying yes to new opportunities can help us find the path to where we really want to go professionally How to improve our experience when we feel stuck in a job that is not serving us well   About the Guest: With nearly 30 years of domestic and global, Laurel speaks the language of organizations. She uses her specialized expertise in risk management, consulting and human resources to guide individual clients through a customized process to address the challenges they are facing while building their teams. Laurel created LaurelRutledge.com, The Rutledge Perspective Podcast and The ReSource after nearly 30 years in a corporate career. She has built functions, led turnarounds and led the HR/audit function of M&A activities. Being data-driven as well as people focused, Laurel knows how to work with leaders ensure that all aspects of a decision are brought forward and those in decision-making positions are accountable for the decisions that are made. It’s not about who is right, but about what is the best decision to be made with the greatest return and the least amount of negative people impact. In starting her own business, Laurel recognized the frustration and confusion happening when small business owners were starting to hire teams. All of a sudden, the focus moved from their business “zone of genius” to the unknown of human resources management. “I wanted to alleviate the pain and frustration of these small business owners – especially women in business” To help them minimize the risk of costly fines and penalties by learning to “LEAD with their HEART, but ACT with their HEAD.” www.laurelrutledge.com https://www.instagram.com/laurel.k.rutledge https://www.instagram.com/the.resource.bylkr/ https://www.facebook.com/therutledgeperspective https://www.facebook.com/theresourcebylkr   About the Host: Janice Scholl has spent her entire career talking about money and business. Through her time as a commercial banker, consultant and mentor to budding entrepreneurs, she helped clients create solid business and financial strategies to help propel their business to success. While working with aspiring female entrepreneurs, Janice noticed that the same four themes kept repeating: Many women are uncomfortable with finance, both in their business and in their personal life. Women want access to more women mentors and advisors. Women often start businesses because they feel the corporate world doesn’t fit their lifestyle. Few are motivated by purely financial reasons. Mothers didn’t want money to drive their family decisions. From these themes The Money, Career, & Motherhood Podcast was born. Now Janice spends her time helping mothers gain confidence and understanding about money, career, and business topics as they relate to motherhood and family – the way many women actually think about money. Janice loves helping mothers implement business and financial strategies within their families to help each family member thrive.   Visit the Money, Career, & Motherhood website, Facebook page, Facebook group, or on Instagram.   Thanks for listening! Ep 37: Reinventing your career after motherhood with Raquel Kelley
Let’s be honest here – the idea of motherhood doesn’t always match the reality. Too many women have the professional wind knocked out of them after having their first child and realizing, “I can’t keep going the way I was before.” That was certainly the case for my guest on this week’s episode of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Raquel Kelley was killing it in her career as a producer for E! Entertainment. All-nighters and red carpets were her thing…pre-baby that is. Raquel had a plan for her life, until babies turned her life upside down. Through a cross-country move, postpartum depression, and a complete career rehaul – motherhood changed everything in Raquel’s life. But this isn’t a sad story, because as Raquel says, “Sometimes, you have to crumble before you can be built back up.” This episode is a must listen for every mom who thought they had it all figured out, until their little bundle of joy arrived!   About the Guest: Raquel Kelley began her career at E! Entertainment on Live! From the Red Carpet. While looking glamourous from the outside, her knack for pulling back the curtain on what really happens behind the scenes started here. Over the next decade Raquel climbed the ranks at NBCUniversal to become a producer on the hit show Fashion Police. Inspired by Joan Rivers, who despite being eighty-years-old could out-run, outwit, and out-cuss the entire cast and crew, Raquel wanted a comical creative outlet for herself. While going through the wedding planning process, she created I Guess I Do, a blog focusing on the funny, relatable stories behind the pretty pictures. Due to the success of her blog, Raquel became the LA expert for Conde Nast at BRIDES Magazine, a writer for Running with Heels Magazine, as well as Featured Blogger for The Huffington Post. After having her first child, she was then asked to contribute to HuffPost Parents where she was a top contributor and her articles were featured internationally. Raquel then had two children under two who served her up some major humble pie and made pulling all-nighters before awards shows and working with Joan look like a cake walk. But as she has always done, Raquel is onto her next project and is ready to pull back the curtain on her hardest job-to-date: Motherhood.   Check out MOMGUL at: Podcast: http://bit.ly/momgulpodcast Website: www.momgul.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/momgul/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/momgulofficial LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/momgul Personal Site: www.raquelkelley.com     About the Host: Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Ep 36: Helping your strong-willed child grow into a healthy, self-sufficient adult with parenting coach Kelly Nault
Have you ever heard the phrase start with the end in mind? For most of us I think the end parenting goal is to grow our children into happy, well-adjusted, self-sufficient adults. But when my guest Kelly Nault was a college counselor many of the young adults she met were anything but. And that lack of self-confidence that came from feelings of insufficiency for those students could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Kelly and I talk about the importance of going back to the basics with our kids – teaching the life skills everyone needs to know to become independent, not just the fun extracurriculars many families are focused on in today’s world. We also talk about the unique challenges of parenting a strong-willed child, and how to channel your strong-willed child’s need for control into the attributes we want our kids to exhibit as adults.   About the Guest: Kelly Nault is an award-winning parenting author, recovering people pleaser & creator of the SMART Mom Path. Twenty-four years ago, Kelly struggled with a strong-willed child... whose SUPERPOWER was finding ALL her child discipline loopholes. Then...she got help (plus, her master's and pre-doctoral in counselling, too). Instead of believing positive discipline, or attachment parenting was THE answer, she created a customizable SMART Mom Path... which helps dedicated moms raise a respectful child, but WITHOUT mom burnout, nor breaking their child’s spirit. Kelly’s had the honour of speaking to over 1,000,000 moms as a parenting spokesperson and has been featured in publications such as Today’s Parenting magazine. Her award-winning book is called, When You’re About to Go Off the Deep End... Don’t Take Your Kids With You. Kelly’s passion is helping committed moms with a strong-willed child eliminate the exhausting tantrums and fights, so they can enjoy a loving family and be more of the mom their children deserve! Kelly’s FREE quiz: “What’s Your Mom Type?” helps moms discover their SECRET alter ego and is found at www.JoyfullyParenting.com.   About the Host: Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Ep 35: Foundations for a healthy relationship with money
Have you noticed that it’s hard to make changes in your money habits? You seriously tell yourself that you’re really going to stick to the budget or stop spending this time. But without even noticing, your budget slides to the back burner and you’re back to your old spending ways. In this episode, we’re going to talk about the foundations for a healthy relationship for money, to set you up for success with the changes you want to make in your financial life. You can focus all your efforts on improving your money habits, but that’s only one part of a strong money foundation. If you’re weak in another area, there will still be challenges to overcome. If you have a strong understanding of these money foundations and can identify which areas you need work in, you can create a plan to strengthen your family’s finances based on your specific needs.   About the Host: Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Instead of a sense of fullness you just feel overwhelmed and not in control of your time? What impact does this have on your family?   Family life is often just something we scramble to do outside of work hours. Ep 31: Should you take a career break?
According to the recent Women in the Workplace 2020 report by McKinsey and LeanIn, 1 out of 4 women are considering a leave of absence or stepping out of the workforce at this time. COVID has placed working women under a greater burden of workload, stress, and risk. While there has been a lot of talk in the news about the impact of COVID on working mothers, little has been said to help women actually make the decision to stay or leave the workforce. In today’s episode, I’m providing mothers with a framework to help them decide if a career break is right for them. The challenge is there is no right answer that applies to all mothers! If after this episode you’re a mom still trying to figure things out, book a FREE 30-minute career break strategy session today.   About the Host: Janice Scholl has spent her entire career talking about money and business.
