New Fashioned
Muslim women know fashion, and as such, they know Lisa Vogl, spokesperson for modest fashion and domestic violence, and convert to Islam. Her revelation about converts post shahadah (coming to Islam) is an important reflection of the Muslim community, but even more important are her tips to step up to and for new Muslims. A good point she alludes to is that while Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, there are still a lot of people leaving Islam, and we have to consider why that’s true. A 2017 survey found 24% of Muslim Americans have left Islam, and that 55% of that group no longer identifies with any religion. *Collective shudder.* Tune in at 6pm EST tonight on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, or click on our link in bio to share this episode with a momsister. Food Addictions: When It's Not Just a Craving
Samihah Huq joins us to discuss her experience with food addiction and how she’s hit a wall with her doctor in terms of understanding, naming, and taming it. There are barriers to wrapping our brains around food addiction in the Muslim community, starting with the doctor’s office and leading right up to an auntie’s buffet table.Just like any other addiction, food affects neurochemistry and failure to look at it as a passing issue, a phase, or anything other than a disease unto itself is leading us on a dangerous path. Hear about some tools to help us identify the problem, work with our doctors to name it, and come up with a recovery plan.Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, Amazon Music and Alexa. Tina Khan joins us today to discuss her experience watching her son’s spiral into drugs and mental health crises and what it did to their family. This is definitely an episode you want to hear before you choose to let your kids listen in, but it really does merit a listen by young people to hear what drug addiction does, not just to an individual, but a family and community.Where are we as a Muslim community in terms of supporting our young Muslims struggling with drug addiction, and just as importantly to our momcrew, are we there for our moms who have a child in crisis like this? BONUS Replay: Hasan V Jafri on Roe v Wade
Due to the mind-numbing circumstances of this week’s Supreme Court decision, we decided to re-release our abortion episode. Right, critics, we know if our moms got abortions, we would not be born to tell the tale. Your fallacy of logic is too exhausting to even address.    As women, moreover as mothers, we are consumed with grief and anger over what is happening on the daily to threaten our children, but now, even the bodies of our female children?  While we regroup and figure out how to take action, we want to reshare our thoughts and some facts about Islam and abortion. Check our shownotes on this one for sure to get the links.    For all these years, the cockroaches have been warning the world about Sharia Law when their own religious laws are SO MUCH more dangerous to women. The irony is maddening. Tell us what you think about Roe v Wade being overturned in comments, but if you identify as male, you should observe and remain silent. As owners of the only set of organs to have laws created to control them, we are hypervigilant right now and have given fair warning to tread lightly or not at all.   Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon, or ask Alexa. Muslim Moms' Spiritual Fortitude
Ustadha Safiya Ravat of Suhbah Institute reminds us how to focus on our Ramadan as moms–beyond the food, the rat race, the decor, and all the things we have to continue doing–to build our safe spiritual spaces with Allah SWT.    Uzma sniffs a lot in this episode after Ustadha shares the tafseer of a commonly misquoted and misused hadith. We couldn’t cut out all that helpful audio from our guest. This one’s for all the girls who grew up being told they didn’t belong in the masjid.   Share this episode with 2 moms you know to remind them how amazing they are and how loved they are by Allah SWT. Perpetuity of Ramadan Spiritual Productivity
We are so honored to have Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi talk to us about impediments to spiritual consistency in our lives. While some folks are trying to get through Ramadan day by day, we are excessively worried about the month coming to a close and not having learned anything. Y’all know we are an anxious duo at the podcast! How do we carry our Ramadan routines forward past this blessed month and not lose the spiritual high?   Let’s talk about train cars, the myth of parental ownership, suhbah (spiritual companionship, which is coming up later this month, by the way!), acts of worship we can rely on no matter our stage of motherhood, and insha’Allah walk away feeling energized to maintain the magic of Ramadan, keeping up steam for the rest of the year. Ketogenic Lifestyle for Muslims
FitMuslimah Mubarakah Ibrahim tells us about what keto is today, and what it is NOT. Specifically, how is a ketogenic lifestyle (y’all know we don’t like to say “diet” on the podcast!) conducive to fasting in Ramadan in particular? Ketosis is our friend when it comes to fulfilling our worship goals during this holy month. There’s a reason FitMuslimah calls Ramadan “Shahr al Ketosis” (month of ketosis)!   Trace traditional diets of colonized people and learn the origins of our foods, and how those were forced to change to the detriment of global health. Muslim Nutrition & Fitness Series: Zaiba & Uzma's Fitness Success 2022
Zaiba & Uzma were so excited to talk about Ramadan prep and the physical, spiritual, and mental work that has to start now, that they recorded an episode together documenting what’s worked so far for them. While Zaiba has been on her journey longer than Uzma now, it’s useful to find out what we aren’t saying correctly to ourselves, and within earshot of our kids, that can sabotage our success before we even begin.   Sorry, but the conversation that one CAN’T do something like make up their fasts, run a mile, or complete a perfect Pinterest Ramadan tableau is untrue.
