Episode 280 - Rob Ballmaier Talks Wonder Woman 1984
This week the boys welcome back the official Mind Gap DCEU Correspondent, Rob Ballmaier, to talk about Wonder Woman 1984. *Spoiler Alert* This episode is absolutely filled with them. Doug makes a point at the start of the podcast to let it be known that their goal was not to shit on Wonder Woman 1984. What happens after that we’ll call a very critical look at what was a very oddly executed film by most standards. The three all agree that visually the movie was stunning and looked beautiful. With that positive point of agreement out of the way the knives come out and the nerds start carving away at the various glaring issues they’ve all found with this film. These issues include choices that make the lead character come off weaker and more dependent than she is, how Diana keeps her employment throughout the years despite not visibly aging, the fight choreography, outfits, weapons, and Doug’s most hated aspect of the Wonder Woman mythos, her bracers. After a dip into the divergence of the DC universe that was announced with Michael Keaton being the next Batman, the quickest throw-down you’ve ever heard happens as the technical difficulties begin to mount and Doug’s patience is sorely tested. Based off some top-notch editing, hopefully you haven’t picked up on any of these technical issues and you have no auditory frame of reference for what we’re talking about here. Episode 279 - New Year’s Resolutions 2021, Movies from the Daily Wire, and Wrapping up the Mandalorian Season 2
It’s a brand new year and the boys are back after a one week break to ring in 2021 on Twitch! After a bit of housekeeping, the boys dive into the concept of New Year’s resolutions, The Daily Wire picking up a possibly controversial film Run Hide Fight for distribution, and a spoiler-laden wrap-up of The Mandalorian Season 2. This week’s throw-down, and the first of 2021, pits the major gods of two of the most famous ancient pantheons in the western world against each other:  Zeus vs Odin. It’s a battle between two completely overpowered entities and if you can believe it, it’s a close one. Tune in to find out which pantheon reigns supreme. Episode 278 - The Reviewniverse talks Cyberpunk 2077
This week the boys welcome back Chris and Steve from the Reviewniverse Podcast. The show opens with the esteemed guests describing their podcast where things get reviewed and their gaming channel The Streamviewniverse on YouTube. After a bit of mischief, Doug and Justin welcome Mind Gap’s first Special Correspondent JJ “Pogchamp” Howard who gives us the dirt on this week’s main topic Cyberpunk 2077. The guys then discuss “crunch” from game developers and the dangers of massive amounts of pre-orders and buying games that are in early access. Chris however points out not all games in early access are traps like this and cites the huge success of Hades. CD Projekt Red’s review embargo leading up to the game’s release doesn’t sit well with anyone on the panel but it does help to lead to a rather hilarious impromptu skit from Chris and Steve involving the murder of several Santas which is very much worth checking out. We are then treated to the end of the “.7 seconds of Trapt” era due to their general awfulness and a competition to replace them. The panel listens to Justin’s carefully curated .7 second clips of many popular songs and a new official .7 second king is chosen. That leads seamlessly to this week’s throw-down pitting Christian Bale against Tom Cruise in a battle of the on-set tantrum throwers. Episode 277 - Marvel on Disney+ and Senator Thom Tillis is the Worst
This week the boys are all alone for the first time in a long time. Topics discussed include Marvel’s rollout plan for movies and TV shows on Disney+ in the next 3-4 years, the ever-evolving state of Spiderman 3’s cast that seems to change weekly, and the rather serious story of Senator Thom Tillis proposing legislation that would end in a prison sentence for streamers and YouTubers with DMCA violations. Mind Gap Podcast doesn’t usually dip too deep into politics, but this one hit home in a number of ways.  After the boys share their thoughts on that serious issue, the tension is broken and then amped right back up by this week’s throw-down featuring The Falcon Vs. The Winter Soldier. Since they’re going to be teamed up we might as well know who would survive if they ever fought. Episode 276 - Adam Smestad talks KFC’s Lifetime movie and Warner Bros taking 2021 to HBO Max
This episode sees the boys welcoming back all-star, co-producer of The Quarantine Files and head of Smoose Entertainment, Adam Smestad. Adam speaks about his experience writing, acting in, and directing The Quarantine Files series. Justin also brings up Adam’s Chicago International REEL Shorts Film Fest “Best in Fest” winning film 6 months in 2063 which also stars the very funny Seth Gersbach. After celebrating Adam’s fantastic achievement (which he found out about 15 minutes before the show) the topic turns once again to KFC and the Lifetime Movie they’ve produced, starring Mario Lopez as the Colonel, called A Recipe For Seduction. After the smoothest transition in the business, the topic swings over to Warner Brother’s announcement that they will be releasing all of their 2021 films directly to HBO Max. The panel talks about the potential good and bad repercussions this could cause within the industry as well as Legendary threatening to sue Warner after feeling blindsided by this decision. After all the movie discussion is wrapped up, a very “Adam Smestad themed” throw-down takes shape when Q from the Bond series faces off against Alfred Pennyworth from Batman. Adam being a fanboy of both franchises gleefully weighs in on both of these combatants. The heated battle challenges the minds and hearts of the panel before a victor is declared. Episode 275 - Omari Brown talks life after the Late Show apprentice program
This week, the boys welcome back the amazing Omari Brown. Many months ago, the Quarantine kicked off with Omari appearing on the show; so, with any luck his return will end this whole thing...because that’s how it works right? Omari of course was a member of the prestigious Late Show Apprentice Program on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Omari comes back to the show a full-fledged member of Stephen Colbert’s crew as a verified clip hunter in the footage department. The conversation kicks off with Omari relating his experiences within his new role in the footage department. Doug gets triggered when the topic of music rights comes up and he goes off on another classic Doug Rant™. Omari goes on to share with us some insight into the name change from “The Late Show” to “A Late Show”. Doug asks Omari to share the joke pitch he’s most proud of and the one he still has nightmares about. The panel then talks about how much luck actually plays into any of their successes as well as much bigger successes that don’t always get acknowledged. Finally, a very tense throw-down hits the group when Jon Stewart is pitted against Stephen Colbert. This one really tasks the whole crew as Omari gives his insider impression on Colbert and Justin gives his outsider impression on Stewart. The conclusion shakes the show to its very core. Episode 274 - Matt Lamson talks Thanksgiving, Comcast Sucks, and Traditions
This week, the boys welcome back Matt Lamson, one half of the power duo Chris and Matt from the Chris and Matt show (hint: he's the Matt half). He’s also the star of the season or series finale of The Quarantine Files. He describes his experience filming remote and his playfully hateful relationship with 2 East 8th’s own Drew Dull. The guys also discuss the benefits of a now masked society, the recent “dick move” by Comcast imposing data caps on home internet use, the myth surrounding the first Thanksgiving and how it still persists in this day and age, Black Friday horror stories, some of Matt’s Lamson Family Christmas traditions, & strange Catholic customs, and more! It’s a show to be thankful for. An audible was called in this week’s throw-down when a Twitch viewer requested Jack Skellington be put up against The Grinch. Matt shows off his debate club demeanor and it’s a closely contested see-saw of a battle. Follow us on Twitch to hang out while we record our new episodes and stream video game sessions! Episode 273 - Jamie Yates talks MCU Phase 4, Wanda/Vision, and massive TV budgets
This week the boys welcome back a true Mind Gap veteran the delightful Jamie Yates. Jamie is also the star of the penultimate episode of the critically acclaimed lockdown web series The Quarantine Files. She describes the unique experience of playing 5 characters while taking direction remotely on 2 computers and being filmed on a single iPhone. The meat and potatoes of this episode is Phase 4 of the MCU! It’s been a while since the dorks really tucked into this topic so Jamie kicks things off with hot takes on the Wanda/Vision series set to come out soon on Disney+. All of the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows and movies coming up in the next few years get a bit of time in the conversational sun. The talk of superheroes eventually leads to the rise of superhero sized budgets that TV shows are currently getting. With an upcoming Lord of the Rings series estimated to have a budget nearing $1 billion and many shows, including the upcoming Marvel shows, having $25 million per episode, Justin ponders if this is ultimately damaging to smaller budget productions. The show ends with a thrilling matchup in the throw-down between Scarlet Witch and Loki. While it starts out seemingly over before it began, the debate really makes this one a lot closer than any of the panel members thought it would be. Episode 272 - Seth Gersbach talks Stephen King and Fantastic Beasts
In this episode, the boys welcome back the star of episode 6 of the critically acclaimed* The Quarantine Files web series Seth Gersbach. The dorks talk about Seth’s episode of The Quarantine Files as well as the other web series Seth and Justin worked on together, Chicago HR (which you can find on the Our Work page). Other topics include favorite video games like Final Fantasy, Doug’s two-day epic tail of comedic mishaps, Stephen King’s novels (specifically The Dark Tower series), and the future of the Fantastic Beasts series now that Johnny Depp has been forced to step down. After some highly regrettable things for the Twitch crowd, the throw-down between Saruman and Randall Flagg commences. The battle is fierce between two master manipulators but there can be only one. Episode 271 - Kristi Alsip talks Sean Connery, Acting, and Baby Shark
Auditory Hallucination Warning: Just before the 6 minute mark there is a touch of audio echo that lasts about 1 minute. We just wanted to let you know that it's real and not insanity creeping in on you. This week, the boys welcome the multi-talented actress and singer Kristi Alsip, star of episode 5 of The Quarantine Files! As it sometimes happens, talk immediately goes into purchasing men’s thongs. This may or may not have something to do with the upcoming Quarantine Files episode, you’ll just have to tune in on November 6th to find out. Luckily, this swiftly transitions to Kristi’s band, Crawford’s Daughter, and her musical experience. The discussion of musicals leads to another Doug rant which is preceded by Justin’s latest musical creation simply titled “Doug Hates Stuff”. You have to hear it to believe how truly on point it is. After a seamless transition from Justin, the conversation turns to the sad passing of Sean Connery last week. Our heroes reminisce about some of Connery’s greatest roles and this leads to a much larger conversation about acting, roles, and personal philosophies on the art. The focus then shifts to the fact that “Baby Shark” has overtaken “Despacito” as the most watched video of all time on YouTube. The topic of this song being used as torture in an Oklahoma prison naturally comes up which leads to everyone weighing in on other songs that make for suitable torture material. Justin’s torture song happens to be “Summer Girls” by LFO so if you see him around make sure to sing those fantastic lyrics to him. Things are wrapped up this week with a throw-down featuring Sean Connery’s James Bond versus Roger Moore’s James Bond. An epic Bond V. Bond battle where only one Bond emerges. Who will it be? Episode 270 - Ashlyn Seehafer and Chris Vellucci talk Halloween and Naperville
In this episode, the boys welcome Mind Gap All-Stars and the stars of 2 East 8th’s upcoming 4th episode of The Quarantine Files, Ashyln Seehafer and Chris Vellucci. After a conversation about the fun and interesting nature of filming the Quarantine Files, the group slips into an update about the state of the Naperville Swingers. This is of course a reference to Ashlyn’s first Mind Gap appearance where she explained the practice of boulder painting indicates just how freaky your household gets. At some point, Chris tries to highlight the best points of Superman Returns to no effect as Justin and his mighty soundboard save the audience from that torture. This somehow transitions into a conversation on Halloween which is right around the corner.  Ashlyn tells us all about how she used to dress up as puns and Chris describes how he dressed up in a Ninja Turtle costume his mom made him…when he was 18. Everyone talks about their Halloween plans or lack thereof due to the never-ending pandemic. Things like pandemic themed escape rooms and “nothing” were the most popular activities this year.   Finally the throw-down this week pits The Thing from The Thing against the Xenomorph from Alien. This debate is extremely heated and well thought out by all parties. Want to know who wins? You’ll just have to download and listen to find out, won’t you? Episode 269 - Robin Minkens Talks Borat 2 and Aliens
In this episode, the boys welcome back the lovely and talented Robin Minkens to the show. She is the star of 2 East 8th’s 3rd episode of their Quarantine Files series now on YouTube. The episode kicks off with some catching up with Robin who performs at the Mad Hatter’s Tea and Gin party in Chicago’s South Loop. This rather quickly dips into the topic of Robin’s Quarantine Files episode, extra-terrestrials. As usual, when the topic of aliens comes up it leads to Ridley Scott movies. When Ridley Scott movies come up, Prometheus comes up. When Prometheus comes up, Doug goes on a rant in regards to that film. Once they get Doug calmed back down the topic of Rudy somehow comes up and Doug gets riled right back up. This leads to a big discussion on what has more value, effort or talent? The discussion of natural talent leads to discussing Sacha Baron Cohen and the upcoming Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, in which Cohen spent 5 days in character in a cabin with conspiracy theorists. This brings up the conversation on the difficulty of true acting and all parties sound off on their experience. One bright spot is Justin’s debut web series Who is Todd Hammer comes up after he said he didn’t have any chops. The throw-down theme claims another victim as this week the contest pits E.T. the extraterrestrial against Mac from Mac and Me. For those who may not remember who Mac is, he’s a McDonald’s/Coca-cola E.T. knockoff, made popular by Paul Rudd’s Conan appearances more than anything. Episode 268 - Matty Robinson Talks Bill Burr, SNL, and Bieber Crocs
Come join us for this week’s episode with Mind Gap All-Star, Matty Robinson! Matty is also the star of the second episode of 2 East 8th’s Quarantine Files project. The first topic on tap is Bill Burr’s enigmatic first hosting experience on Saturday Night Live. The opening monologue drew plenty of attention and ire and the gang breaks down why the people complaining need to just calm down. After breaking down Burr’s monologue our dorks dive into a Weekend Update segment from the same episode where Kate Mckinnon had a very funny bit turn into a very poignant break of character. This of course turns into a recounting of some of the best breaks in the memories of the guest and hosts on SNL. Things change gears awkwardly after that to Facebook’s decision to finally start taking down Holocaust deniers on their platform. This somehow turns into a discussion of Doug starting an OnlyFans account that you really just have to listen to for yourself. One more expert segue and the topic is the launch of the Justin Bieber signature crocs. Finally, we make it to the throw-down which features The Homelander from The Boys against The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan not Hal Sparks). Episode 267 - Michael Sherman & Karla Serrato Talk Second City for Sale and Free Guy
Check out this week’s episode featuring power duo Karla Serrato and Michael Sherman, who star in Episode One of the upcoming The Quarantine Files project from 2 East 8th Productions. Talk starts off with the pandemic and how its nature spawned The Quarantine Files project. The heroes move into a discussion about legendary Chicago comedy institution The Second City being up for sale. This transitions seamlessly into Regal Cinema closing down all of their theaters again due to a host of pandemic related reasons. Movie theater discussion leads us to the new trailer for Ryan Reynold’s next movie Free Guy and if anyone is interested in seeing it. Finally, the podcast ends with a vaguely erotic fan fiction-esque throw-down between Paul Rudd and Ryan Reynolds. Want to know what that means? You’ll just have to listen now, won’t you? Episode 266 - Episode 266 - Dungeons and Dragons written by AI, Star Wars, and Camp Cretaceous
In this week’s episode, the guys kick things off talking about artificial intelligence researchers trying to teach an AI to be a Dungeon Master. The show’s resident DM, Doug, weighs in on how cool this would be but also how difficult the concept seems given the highly improvisational nature of a round of Dungeons and Dragons. This leads to a discussion about some researchers who created an “AI Jesus” by feeding a bible to an AI and getting it to come up with “Bible-like verses”. The duo then move on to an article from Screenrant, Doug’s favorite website for news, which brings up a good point about the Rise of Skywalker. The article posits that Kylo should have seen the force ghost of Anakin Skywalker rather than Han Solo. Talk swings once more, this time to Jurassic Park and a new kids show on Netflix called Camp Cretaceous. Doug and Justin take turns poking holes in the premise as Doug lays out part of the story of the first season. Consider yourself spoiler alerted. The throw-down pits Shang-Chi, the subject of an upcoming Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, against The Iron Fist Danny Rand.  The comics have had their say, well sort of, now the boys chime and a winner IS declared. Episode 265 - Ghosts in Gettysburg, Japanese Ghosts, and the God Paradox
After a string of amazing guests, the dynamic duo thought it’d be fun to nerd out with just the two of them this week. The episode starts off with a bit of a discussion on a recent video posted of supposed ghosts recorded at Gettysburg. This launches into a much larger discussion on the concept of ghosts and whether or not they exist or if the evidence of their existence is compelling. Doug is a tough nut to crack while Justin tries to keep an open mind; eventually they agree most hauntings are probably just a nest of squirrels living in a house, unbeknownst to the owner. This conversation eventually leads into a discussion about Japanese spirits which then opens into a broader talk about many other cultures’ beliefs in ghosts. A quick pivot lands the dorks in the middle of the God Paradox, discussing whether or not an omnipotent being could create a stone so heavy that it could not lift it. This week’s throw-down then pits the preeminent monster hunter himself, Geralt of Rivia, against Blade, the half-vampire vampire hunter. It’s a very even match and a great deal of good points get thrown around before a victor is declared. If you want to know how that ends you’ll just have to give a listen. The throw-down this week featured a surprise new opener featuring Mr. Tex himself, of Battletech and Space Station 13 fame, saying the titular line which pleased everyone watching on Twitch.  The throw-down itself featured Dr. Who’s Daleks against the tag-team of Magneto and Professor X from Marvel’s X-Men. Episode 263 - Tex Talks Star Trek, Pearls of Wisdom, and Bad Guys
This week the boys were delighted to welcome back a true gem of the YouTube underground, Mr. Tex of Tex Talks BattleTech and Space Station 13 notoriety. A podcast host himself, Tex helps the guys navigate a treasure trove of topics while adding his trademark humor to each one. The dorks kick things off talking about tabletop games gone bad and what makes a great villain. The conversation shifts to a personal villain in Tex’s life, Games Workshop, and their handling of the Warhammer 40k series. Someone brings up the film “The Patriot” which opens the door for Tex to flex his historian muscles and shed some light on the founding fathers’ hygiene...or lack thereof. From the live chat, Jarryd insists on asking Tex for his opinion on Superman Returns, Jarryd’s favorite movie of all time, which naturally leads to a discussion on how Batman v Superman could have been improved. The night wraps up with a throw-down in honor of StarTrek day featuring Scotty vs Geordi Laforge and let’s just say Tex litigates his side of this argument very well. Before everyone signs off, Tex shares some fantastic advice for how to look at the rest of 2020 and even shares a recitation of Bukowski to round things out. You can find the works of Mr. Tex and others in the Black Pants Legion on YouTube where Tex Talks BattleTech and generally engages in chicanery on Space Station 13. Episode 262 - Jay Schultz On Remembering Chadwick Boseman and Raised by Wolves
In this episode, the boys welcome a fellow creator Jay Schultz who made the card game Skittykitts. They talk about Jay’s game before the conversation turns to the remembrance of actor Chadwick Boseman who tragically passed recently. They discuss the importance of his role as the Black Panther and how the actor made that role and those films so special. The topic eventually shifts to a new series coming out on HBO from director Ridley Scott called Raised by Wolves. The nerds share thoughts about the concept of androids raising children as well as if we’ve already reached the technological singularity. The episode concludes in a throw-down with two similar anti-heroes duking it out when the boys pit The Punisher (Jon Bernthal version) against Billy Butcher from the Boys (season 2 debuts Sept 4th). Episode 261 - Jamie Jirak talks DC FanDome, Powerpuff Girls, and Buried Alive
In this episode, the guys welcome back to the show the wonderful and talented Mind Gap All-Star, Jamie Jirak! Jamie is a writer for Comicbook.com, perhaps the world’s biggest Agents of Shield fan, and absolutely hilarious. They talk about her turn moderating an Agents of Shield cast Q&A and rubbing elbows with Agent Coulson himself. The dorks then discuss the shocking story of a woman in Detroit who was declared dead by paramedics and then found to be alive at the funeral home. The main topic of the night has our 3 friends dissecting what went down at the DC FanDome which gives Doug the chance to double down on his overwhelming cynicism about the Snyder Cut. In the final topic of the night, the heroes ponder the live-action Powerpuff Girls series that was announced and is being led by Diablo Cody. Things end with another epic throw-down pitting one Agent Coulson vs. Nick Fury. Jamie clearly has a favorite in this fight and she lays down the hard knowledge to back up her choice.
