04.14.21. Cause for Pause
This week, the use of the Johnson & Johnson one-shot COVID-19 vaccine is paused, raising questions and concerns, as well as setbacks for President Biden’s vaccination effort.  A recent poll shows that less than half of all Americans are concerned with many of the core tenets of journalism… but why? We examine this, as well as President Biden’s plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the ongoing trial of Derek Chauvin, and continuing unrest in Minneapolis as more protests ensue following the shooting death of another black man. We then shift our attention over to the controversial decision to pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, raising concerns among health experts about hesitation by Americans to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. The CDC’s reasoning for doing so was “out of an abundance of caution,” but how does the safety of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine compare against other more common medications that have caused similar problems related to blood clotting in the past? Also, how big a setback will the decision to pause the use of the vaccine be for the Biden administration? We examine all of this in this week’s edition of Middle Theory.  Coronavirus Charities: If you are able, please consider supporting the following charities that are offering relief for those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Visit our Coronavirus Charities Page to learn more. 04.06.21. Deadly Force
As the trial of Derek Chauvin proceeds, we look at statements from police and medical professionals who call the death of George Floyd the result of “deadly force.”  This week, while many states are setting new plans for reopening in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, many Americans are still getting vaccinated, while others await vaccine availability in their localities. Also, the Senate continues to weigh options regarding the filibuster, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law allowing him to serve two more terms. Meanwhile, as the trial of Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin ensues, experts including members of law enforcement and medical professionals have taken to the stand, calling Chauvin’s actions which led to the death of George Floyd “excessive” and “deadly.” We examine all this, and more on this week’s edition of Middle Theory.  Coronavirus Charities: If you are able, please consider supporting the following charities that are offering relief for those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Visit our Coronavirus Charities Page to learn more. 03.29.21. Meet the Press
This week, President Biden gives his first press conference as reporters asked the commander-in-chief about immigration, the filibuster, foreign policy, and more. Modern living in the West is a mad rush… but why? After opening dialogue on mindfulness (and how badly many of us need to make time for “silence” in our lives), we turn our attention toward controversial new legislation in Georgia that may affect ease of access for voters, and has led to many boycotts of the state. Then shifting our attention over to President Biden’s first official press conference, we look at why the commander in chief has come under fire for his statements about immigration, the filibuster, and a range of other topics, all of which we analyze on this week’s edition of Middle Theory. 03.22.21. Takes One to Know One
Things heat up between the United States and Russia, as statements by President Joe Biden during a recent ABC interview raise bipartisan concerns about U.S. foreign policy.  As we lead off this week, supporters of the online conspiracy theories related to Q Anon claim that there was a secret message at the White House on Saint Patrick’s Day… a story almost as strange as the reality that one in every three health care workers in the U.S. have not been vaccinated yet for COVID-19. We look at why and also ask what it says about attitudes toward vaccines and their efficacy among the health care service community. Then shifting out attention ot foreign policy, we look at explosive statements from U.S. President Joe Biden this week, who agreed with George Stephanopoulos’s assessment that Vladimir Putin is a “killer,” which prompted a unique response from the Russian leader. This, in addition to ongoing assessments of the recent shootings in Atlanta and in Boulder, and much more are covered on this week’s edition of Middle Theory. 03.17.21. The Cuomo Connundrum
This week, we look at the ongoing scandal surrounding New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and the uneasy position where it has left Democratic leaders including President Biden and Vice President Harris.  The world has changed over the course of the last year, and even as acclimated to “pandemic life” as most of us now are, many continue to struggle with their jobs, and even personal relationships that require more maintenance and upkeep in the era of social distancing. We look at this, as well as the ongoing problems New York Governor Andrew Cuomo faces with sexual misconduct allegations and a number of other controversies, which could even result in his impeachment from office. However, as the situation unfolds, President Biden has finally spoken out about Cuomo’s situation during an ABC interview, which has many wondering what Vice President Harris will say, or if she will comment on the allegations. Then we wrap up by examining the long term impact of Q Anon conspiracies, and whether those who advocate such ideas do so against their own best interests, in advance of the release of a new HBO documentary which claims it might have exposed the identity of the mysterious peddler of conspiracies throughout the years of Donald Trump’s presidency. 03.08.21. Talk of the Crown
This week, the British Royal Family is placed under renewed public scrutiny following a “bombshell” interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.  The CDC has just released its guidelines for people who have received vaccinations for COVID-19. Although many will now be able to return to some pre-pandemic activities, when is a person who has received their shots still not considered “vaccinated”? Also in the news this week is a new report that claims the United States is doing less to contribute to freedom around the world. We look at this, and why some countries view American political philosophies a potential danger. Then shifting our attention to the story one everyone’s mind this week, we analyze the explosive interview Oprah Winfrey recently conducted with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and why it has the British tabloids “apoplectic.” More significantly, we ask why this story is the sensation that it has become, what its cultural significance is, and why the current online media environment facilitated one of the most revealing glimpses of the British Royal Family in recent memory. Will they ever fully recover in the aftermath of the Harry and Megan “tell-all”? 03.02.21. First Strike
In the first military action of his Presidency, Joe Biden orders an airstrike on Syria which results in backlash from Congressional Democrats. In the news this week, the passing of Vernon Jones marks another milestone, while Johnson & Johnson rolls out an all-new, one-shot COVID-19 vaccine. Political controversy is afoot as well, with several claims of sexual misconduct being alleged against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. However, marking a significant moment early in President Biden’s administration, a recent airstrike on Syria carried about by the new Commander in Chief has left many members of Congress questioning whether it was justified, and why congressional approval was not obtained beforehand. Although Biden followed the action with a letter to Congress, some top members of the Senate haven’t even been briefed on the matter yet, raising questions about the ongoing issue of military power in the United States. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump spoke at CPAC over the weekend, confirming that he would not be forming a new party, and thus securing his position as the leader of the GOP. We weigh in on these, and other issues this week on Middle Theory.  Coronavirus Charities: If you are able, please consider supporting the following charities that are offering relief for those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Visit our Coronavirus Charities Page to learn more. 02.24.21: Cointelpro Confessions
This week, in addition to news we look at recent developments regarding the assassination of Malcolm X, a deathbed confession, and its alleged relationship to the intelligence community’s COINTELPRO operations.  As millions of Americans have awaited the arrival of COVID-19 stimulus checks, some people are learning that they won’t be able to receive theirs until they file their 2020 taxes. Meanwhile, the discussion of stimulus packages came up during a recent New York Times discussion with Senator Mitt Romney, who dropped the bombshell statement that if he runs in 2024, Donald Trump would be likely to win the GOP nomination. We look at the populist sentiments that Romney says exist on both sides of the political aisle, and what events in recent years led to them. Then after the break, we shift our attention over to claims by the surviving family members of Malcolm X, who say that a “deathbed confession” may link the NYPD and FBI to the activist’s assassination. If true, it stokes the fires beneath long-held questions about COINTELPRO, and the involvement of intelligence agencies in the deaths of other activists like Fred Hampton over the years. Is there additional information about Malcolm X’s death that may exist, but which the government has yet to disclose? 02.17.21. End of an Era
This week, with the passing of conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh, we look at the significance of his career on American politics and the rise and fall of Donald Trump.  In recent days, millions of people in the United States are without power as a surprise winter storm rocked the southern United States, straining the power grid and challenging many who are unused to such temperatures. Meanwhile, it was announced on Wednesday that talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh had passed away, marking what many recognize as a significant turning point in American political discourse… and perhaps the veritable “end of an era.” Although Limbaugh has come up several times in discussion and analysis in recent weeks, we look at the significance of his career on American politics, as well as the rise and fall of Donald Trump, whose recent acquittal added a final sour note to the lasting unrest of the last days of his presidency. 02.10.21. What’s Left For the Right
As a second attempt at the impeachment of Donald Trump leads off, we look at opening arguments and new information about January’s siege on the Capitol. A recent perusal of the top ten most-searched words at the website of popular online dictionary Merriam Webster revealed a lot about what’s on people’s minds. At the top of the list at number one was “fascism,” followed by “racism,” “happy,” “pandemic,” “love,” “beautiful,” “coronavirus,” “culture,” i.e.,” and lastly, “socialism.” We can’t say we’re surprised by this list, but as we consider what it reveals about people and what’s on their minds, we look at other changes in American politics that indicate how people are feeling right now about the current political climate. Then turning our attention to the renewed attempt at the impeachment of former President Donald Trump, as opening remarks were made recently on Capitol Hill, some were confused after Trump’s defense team spent most of the time of their opening remarks decrying the siege on the U.S. Capitol Building in January. This might have confused some, but we look at the reasons for their response, which likely had to do with a new 14-minute “master cut” of the violence as it ensued back in January following a rally where then-president Trump appeared to have encouraged the crowd in attendance to take action… which had disastrous consequences. 02.02.21. The Cult of Trump
This week we look at upsets within the GOP as Bush-era Republicans announce their departure from the party, which some call the “Cult of Trump.” Americans continue to suffer sleepless nights as the coronavirus pandemic ensues, but some doctors are now saying many Americans are exhibiting concussion-like symptoms. Murder rates also saw historic highs in 2020, according to a new study, which affects everything from education and films, to Super Bowl Sunday. Meanwhile, all hell broke loose last week when the Robinhood trading app restricted transactions for certain securities after a group of Redditors decided to cause GameStop shares to surge. We weigh in on the Robinhood controversy, and then looking at politics this week, there have been shake ups in the GOP in recent days after many Bush-era Republicans have announced they are leaving the GOP after likening it to a “Cult of Trump.” Will the Republican Party be able to realign its interests over the next four years, or did Trump’s presidency present greater challenges to the party’s standards and leadership than many may realize? 01.27.21: Executive Hors d’Oeuvres
This week we examine the first few days of Joe Biden’s presidency, and the high volume of executive orders it has produced. In a recent press statement, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has argued that we are closer to midnight on the doomsday clock than at any time since 1947. Meanwhile, as the United States continues to feel the ideological aftershocks of the tumult that ensued during the transition between administrations, the Department of Homeland Security has issued a new alert warning about future unrest and potential terrorism… but their concern seems to extend far beyond any single particular ideological group. Then turning our attention to presidential administrations past and present, we look at Trump’s record of “draining the swamp” compared with his final days in office, the pardons he issued (and chose not to issue, as with the case of Julian Assange), and his choice in revoking his own executive order on ethics. This, contrasted with President Biden’s first days in office, and the unprecedented number of executive orders it has seen. While many view it as a proportional response to the last administration, do Biden’s executive orders also represent the potential for concern? 01.19.21. Last Call
With less than 24 hours left in Donald J. Trump’s presidency, we reflect on the changes that have taken place in the last four years, and what they mean for the future.  In the final 24 hours of Donald Trump’s presidency, Gallup has released polls detailing that the 45th Commander in Chief of the United States will exit on a low note, with an approval rating of just 39%. Overall, Gallup says Trump never peaked above 50% approval during his single term in office, as other presidents before him had. And yet, despite what the numbers say, many of Trump’s supporters are frighteningly loyal, as the recent insurgency on the U.S. Capitol building seemed to show. What does this mean for the future of American politics, and how has the Trump Presidency shaped both parties over the last four years? We look at these questions on this week’s edition of Middle Theory. 01.11.21. Final Daze
In the “final daze” of Donald Trump’s administration, the atmosphere is tense as new calls for his removal from office ensue following the siege on the U.S. Capitol Building.  It’s been a tense last few days in Washington, and throughout the United States, following a demonstration by supporters of President Donald Trump which resulted in a temporary siege on the U.S. Capitol Building last week. In the aftermath of the incident, renewed calls for Trump’s removal from office have led to a second impeachment effort, as well as the possibility that the 25th amendment could be invoked. We analyze what led to this point, the political attitudes that fostered it, and why the problems we are seeing in America right now will not simply go away with a transition of power into future administrations. With America closer than it has been in decades to civil war, we look at how America became so divided, and what the path to restoration of unity may be in the years to come. 01.06.21. The Last Stand
As we kick off a new year, chaos ensues in Washington as protesters flood the Capitol Building, interrupting the Senate’s Electoral College Certification.  It’s a new year, everyone… and yet it feels pretty familiar, as we begin our coverage of the news in 2021 with chaos unfolding in the Nation’s Capital. While Vice President Mike Pence performed the awkward role of presiding over the Senate’s certification of Electoral College votes that will ultimately put Joe Biden in the White House, supporters of Donald Trump marched through Washington and made their way to the Capitol Building, where things quickly escalated and protesters made their way into the building. We look at the events leading up to this unprecedented breach of our Nation’s Capital, as well as what the responses by President-Elect Biden, as well as President Trump, have been. Will America be able to find its way back to a more stable way of life, and government? We ask these questions, and look at the events of the last few hours on this week’s edition of Middle Theory. 12.21.20. The Blind Spot
This week as we conclude the unprecedented year that has been 2020, we look at issues surrounding the White House as the arrival of the new administration in January approaches. Happy Holidays, Season’s Greetings, and a Merry Christmas to you all… as we lead off this week, we begin by looking at the new coronavirus relief bill passed by Congress, as well as the news about a new, more contagious strain of the virus currently spreading across the UK and other areas. We also look at the strange position Vice President Mike Pence finds himself in, where he plans to leave the country for several days just after announcing Joe Biden’s electoral college win. Later in the program, we also check in with a press conference featuring soon-departing Attorney General William Barr, and see what he, as well as conservatives like Chris Christie and commentator Geraldo Rivera have had to say in recent days about Trump’s refusal to concede the election, as well as the bad influence of individuals like Michael Flynn and Sidney Powell on the administration. Do some conservatives have an ideological “blind spot” when it comes to Donald Trump? Finally, we travel back in time to 1988 and recall the reason Joe Biden’s initial presidential bid that year failed, all in our year-end wrap-up here on Middle Theory. 12.14.20. Pardon Me
As speculation ensues about whether Donald Trump will issue pardons during his final days in office, many are weighing in on whether Wikileaks founder Julian Assange may be on the list. This week, as health officials in Wisconsin are warning residents to avoid eating raw meant “cannibal sandwiches” this holiday season, the first wave of vaccines are being deployed as part of “Operation Warp Speed” begins. We also look at the recent story involving the apparent hack of a Texas IT company and services it provided to a number of government agencies, which allowed them to become compromised. However, trending on Twitter today had been the idea that in his last days in office, Donald Trump might attempt to pardon Julian Assange, an idea that has received widespread support, even from the likes of Edward Snowden. While the story had been based on bad information posted on Twitter, we look at why many are saying it could still happen, and much more on this week’s edition of Middle Theory.  Coronavirus Charities: If you are able, please consider supporting the following charities that are offering relief for those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Visit our Coronavirus Charities Page to learn more. 12.08.20. The Vice Presidents
This week, we examine Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’s ambitions, and what some Democratic insiders are saying about their former boss and her role in the forthcoming Biden Administration.  As we lead off this week, it was recently announced that legendary folk singer Bob Dylan has sold his entire songwriting catalog, which reminds us of the time Dylan told us about his political party many decades ago. We also look at bioengineering controversies, and an update on Rudy Giuliani, who has been hospitalized with COVID-19. We then shift our attention to what political insiders are saying about Kamala Harris, and her aspirations in the forthcoming Biden administration. As we have seen in years past, the role of Vice President has become increasingly influential in recent years… which we explore this week on Middle Theory. 11.30.20. Information Warfare
Arizona, Pennsylvania, and other states continue to be a source of confusion and controversy in the aftermath of the 2020 Election as the coronavirus pandemic ensues.  This week, we lead off with an innovative new idea for how to keep bars open in the UK during the pandemic: try becoming a place of worship! We also analyze controversies surrounding the deletion of an article on the pandemic by the Johns Hopkins University school newspaper, which has raised questions among some experts. Meanwhile, we see what one expert close to the program has to say about what the numbers really say, and why we aren’t in the clear yet.  Then later, we turn our attention in the direction of Arizona, where continued efforts are underway to attempt to find evidence of voter fraud. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice maintains that there is no significant evidence of this… but what many are missing about the ongoing debate actually has to do with the precedent set by election meddling in 2016. We weigh in on all of this, and more on this edition of Middle Theory.
