Colonel David Russell Williams was a distinguished military man. He commanded thousands, he was a respected leader, he even flew the Queen of England on a few occasions. But what no one knew was that Williams had a sinister side. He broke into homes and would steal undergarments after taking pictures of himself wearing them. This quickly escalated to committing sexual assault and murder. Was Lavinia Fisher really America’s first female serial killer or have her exploits been greatly exaggerated over the last 200 years? She and her husband John ran a hotel outside of Charleston, South Carolina in the early 1800s and the couple were reportedly members of the Six Mile Gang. Although the facts are scarce, John and Lavinia were arrested in February 1819 for the assault of David Ross but were sentenced to death the following January for highway robbery. Lesley Eugene Warren, also known as the Babyface Killer, manipulated women into caring for him, making them feel comfortable around him, but then, in a flash, he would murder them, strangling them and then dumping the bodies in various locations. Juan Corona was a migrant worker turned labor contractor in Yuba City, California during the 1960s and 1970s. He had a reputation for being hard-working but occasionally a bit gruff with a ferocious temper. He would pick up transients and other men searching for work and bring them back to his farm, sending them out on work details when hired by local farmers to harvest crops in their nearby orchards. Ian Brady and Myra Hindley kidnapped, tortured, and murdered five children, burying at least four of the bodies on Saddleworth Moor, over a three year period during the 1960s in Manchester, England. They were finally stopped when Hindley’s brother-in-law, David Smith, reported their fifth murder to police because he had been forced to watch and assist in covering up the crime scene. Both Brady and Hindley were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, callously taking the location of their third victim’s remains, Keith Bennett, to the grave when they passed away behind bars. John Cannan, known as “The Lady Killer,” is a rapist and murderer who was convicted of the sadistic murder of Shirley Banks on October 8th, 1987. He is also believed to be the prime suspect in the two unsolved murders of Sandra Court on May 3rd, 1986, and Suzy Lamplugh who disappeared on July 28th, 1986. Lamplugh’s body has never been found. Cannan suffered a stroke in prison in 2019 and now the police are in a race against time to find Suzy Lamplugh and ensure the man that they believe is responsible stays behind bars. Audrey Marie Hilley lived for the finer things in life. She always dressed well and wanted to be seen and known for having expensive things and a lavish lifestyle. Despite what she wanted, Marie knew she needed more money than what she and her husband Frank were bringing in so she came up with a plan. She took out life insurance policies on her husband, her daughter, and her son at different points throughout her life and also began poisoning them with arsenic. She would end up being charged and convicted of the poisoning murder of Frank Hilley and attempted murder of her daughter Carol. In February 1987, Marie was granted a three-day furlough and disappeared. For decades, Robert Spangler got away with the murders of two wives as well as his two children from his first marriage. It wasn’t until he was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in 2000, that he finally confessed to his crimes after being suspected and watched by authorities from several different agencies. Gilles de Rais was a French nobleman and highly respected military man who was suspected of murdering at least 140 children. It was alleged that he did this in the pursuit of the Philosopher’s stone as well as the fulfillment of a blood contract with the Devil as a way to replenish his wealth after recklessly overspending to maintain an extravagant lifestyle. Andrei Chikatilo, later known as the Butcher of Rostov and the Rostov Ripper, was convicted of murdering 52 people over a 12 year period during the Cold War and through the eventual collapse of the USSR in 1991. Peter Kürten, the Vampire of Düsseldorf, endured a horrific childhood, starved of love and suffering unimaginable abuse at the hands of his father. By the time he was nine years old, he was introduced to bestiality, which eventually escalated to brutally murdering men, women, and children. As a young man, he was in and out of prison for petty crimes, blaming society and prison for his hatred of the world and why he chose to exact revenge. When he insisted that his wife turn him in, Kurten confessed to nearly 80 violent crimes and was charged with nine murders. Richard Chase, notoriously remembered as the Vampire of Sacramento, was in and out of mental institutions for years, ultimately being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Eventually, he was released from the American River Hospital just outside of Sacramento and, without the ability to control his thoughts or behavior, he would embark on a month-long murder spree from December 1977 to January 1978, which claimed the lives of six people as well as several animals. His moniker was due to the fact that Chase drank the blood of and cannibalized his victims because he believed that someone had stolen his pulmonary artery and that his blood had stopped flowing inside him so, in order to survive and prevent his blood from turning into powder, he needed to ingest the blood of others. Moses Sithole, known as the ABC Killer, is considered South Africa’s most prolific serial killer after he was captured and convicted of 38 counts of murder, including the two-year old son of one of his female victims, as well as 40 counts of rape and 6 counts of robbery. Leonarda Cianciulli, known as “The Soap-Maker of Correggio,” had a volatile childhood and lived in fear that the predictions of a fortune-teller who told her that every single one of her children would die, would actually come true. When her oldest son, Guiseppe, was drafted into the Italian Army ahead of the country’s entrance into World War II, Leonarda decided that, in order to protect her son from harm, she needed to offer up a human sacrifice, hoping that God would accept the death of someone else in place of her son. She would murder three women over a year-long period by telling these women that she had found a new prospect for them in a different city, either a potential husband or a new job. Leonarda used the fat she rendered from the bodies as she boiled them down to make soap and dried the blood of her victims, which she then added to her tea cake recipes. Both the soaps and the tea cakes were sold to customers in her shop. Jane Toppan, also known as “Jolly Jane,” was an organized lust serial killer in Massachusetts during the turn of the 19th century, who poisoned her patients when she worked as a nurse, as well as close friends and family members, claiming her main goal in life was to “have killed more people - helpless people - than any other man or woman who ever lived.” Jane confessed to murdering more than 31 people but when she was brought to trial for the murder of one of her victims, Minne Gibbs, she was found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity and committed to Taunton Insane Hospital in 1902, where she would spend the rest of her life.
