Ep 62 - Infinite
When people talk about a book, movie or TV show being a roller coaster, they mean the story usually has lots of action, twists and turns and rarely slows down. Infinite is one of those books. The main character, Wil, wakes up on board the Galahan, a faster-than-light spaceship that is supposed to be taking a small group of scientist to a new world as Earth and Mars are dying. Then he is stabbed with a screwdriver and dies. And that is literally the start of this crazy ride. Ep 61 - Where the Deer and the Antelope Play
Most people know Nick Offerman as the actor who played Ron Swanson, the ultra libertarian parks director on Parks and Recreation. We discussed another book of his a little while back that he wrote with his wife, Megan Mullally, as well as the Audible exclusive books he has done. While the title of his newest book lets you know he will be discussing he thoughts on things he is passionate about, like the environment and hiking, it doesn’t really clue you in on some of his other thoughts he will be sharing, like his political views. Let’s just say if you don’t lean a particular way in your political thinking, you might want to pass this one up. Ep 60 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
We’ve been doing this geeky book club for over two years and we are just now doing a Harry Potter book. We should be ashamed… but we’re not. So let us jump into the flagship book that launched a tidal wave of copy cats and reshaped not only how the book industry looked at YA fiction, but also created an entire media empire that is still beloved by the fans to this day; even if the author isn’t. Ep 59 - New Spring
The Wheel of Time series started in 1984, spanned 14 books and was recently adapted into a series on Amazon Prime. So of course it has a prequel; everything that has that much story to tell has even more to tell right? In New Spring, we meet some of main characters, see how they met and set us up for the massive journey ahead. The question is, unlike many other prequels, is it any good? Ep 58 - Quarter Share
This month we start on a series Shaun introduced us to that immediately grabbed us and wouldn’t let go. Quarter Share, the first in the Trader’s Tale from The Golden Age of the Solar Clipper (that’s a mouth full), follows a Ishmael Wong as he gets a job on a space faring trading ship and grows into the position. Along the way he finds he enjoys the work, his co-workers and his new life. That’s it. No space battles or aliens trying to kill everyone. Sounds rather mundane… and you’ll love every minute of it. Ep 56 - The Wizards Butler
Butler isn’t a job title most people would consider in this day and age. But tie the job to a 1 year contract, $5,000 a month and a cool million on completion and a lot of people might jump at it. But what if the old man you are taking care of thinks he is a wizard? What if he really is? This month we are reading The Wizard’s Butler by Nathan Lowell. We were a little late getting this one recorded and had already planned on taking off the month of December, so count this as an early Christmas present. Ep 54 - Salems Lot
How have we gone 54 episodes of a geeky book club and not read a book by Stephen King yet? This month, we correct that oversight. And what better time to read a book by the modern day master of horror than to setup for Halloween! So when Mr. King asked himself, “what would Bram Stoker’s Dracula be like set in modern times (1970’s), “ the outcome was Salem’s Lot. Grab a stake and some holy water, the time of vampires is upon us. Ep 49 - Escape from Virtual Island / More Bedtime Stories for Cynics / Heads Will Roll
This month we’re doing something a little different. Not only are we discussing three books instead of one, we’re discussing three free books that come with an Audible subscription. The first is Escape from Virtual Island by John Lutz and read by Paul Rudd, Jack McBrayer, Jane Krakowski and a top notch cast. When a guest goes missing in the virtual simulation, a group of employees has to go in and try to track him down. The second is More Bedtime Stories for Cynics by several authors and read by Nick Offerman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Jane Lynch and more top notch celebrities. What happens when you strip out all of the kid friendly parts of a bedtime story? You are left with extremely weird, adult humor.
