Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4
This passage of scripture is overflowing with fantastic content. However, the one word that stands out in the context of “overcome” is the word “have.”
When you understand this statement from the verse, you come to a fantastic insight into the way God sees us.
God places the act of overcoming in the past.
It is not something that is going to happen. It is not something that is currently taking place. From God’s point of view, we “have” already overcome.
When we think about the great men and women in the Bible or history in general, we automatically hold those who have overcome adversity in high esteem.
Consider David facing Goliath, the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace, Peter, the disciple who, after denying Jesus three times, went on to preach the message that would usher in the church age.
Ponder for a moment, do you think we would even know these names if they had not “come over” adversity?
Jesus is the ultimate overcomer. He desires to live in you fully and direct each and every step of your life.
The same overcoming Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. You can access this power in your too life today; this very moment. If you are born again, you are a child of God. You are “of” God and are not an afterthought (1 John 4:4).
You are made an overcomer because “greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world.”
As Christians, we like to quote this verse, but often, we do not think about what it actually means.
It means that at this very moment, you are an overcomer.
When am I an overcomer? Right now!!
