Studio Talk: Solaris | Staging Outer Space in Theatre and Film
Our second Studio Talk discusses staging outer space in theatre and film, inspired by David Greig‘s Solaris. Host: Fiona Mountford, who was theatre critic at the Evening Standard for 17 years. As well as writing (many thousands of) reviews, she wrote feature interviews, talking to almost all of London’s leading theatre makers. Panellists: Will Massa is the Curator of Contemporary Fiction in the BFI National Archive, ensuring contemporary British fiction film is comprehensively represented in the national collection. Rachel O’Riordan was appointed the Artistic Director of the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in February 2019. Brendan Owens has been an astronomer at The Royal Observatory Greenwich, since 2010. Also an avid fan of science fiction, Brendan ensures that Silver Screen Science Fiction film screenings are included monthly in the public astronomy programme that he curates. Alistair McDowall is an award-winning playwright, whose credits include X at the Royal Court Theatre and Pomona at the National Theatre.

Panellists: Anita Anand is a political journalist who has presented television and radio programmes on the BBC for twenty years. Gurminder K Bhambra is Professor of Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies in the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex. Tanika Gupta has written over 20 stage plays over the last 20 years that have been produced in major theatres across the UK and has written extensively for BBC Radio drama.
