Episode #45: Show Us How You Rock Your Gear
Whatever your community and whatever your business type, you use gear. All the tools and software and stuff that make things work for you.Have you ever compiled a list and made it easy to access? Here's my very simple example, a list of tools I use, some hardware, some software. People stumble upon it when they visit my website and I see affiliate commission notifications as a result. Other times I expressly share it in conversations where someone asks we what I use for this or that. It's a tiny project to undertake, so I hope you'll decide to make it happen! You won't regret having it ready to share.A mini gear list can accompany all sorts of content too, now that I think about it. I once had a well ranked blog post about teaching kids how to crochet. I added a recommended gear list to the post itself with links to child hand friendly crochet hooks, yarn barns, craft supply storage items and simple pattern sets. It worked great!Let me know how you decide to implement on this

Episode #41: Three Ways To Break Out Of That Funk
After all these years I love my business more than ever but from what I can see, that isn't true for everyone. Some of my business friends seem to get stuck along the way. Maybe technology overwhelms them. Maybe they get mired down by all of the different marketing skills they feel they need to know all about. Maybe something they wanted badly ended up in failure. Maybe they got their feelings hurt by someone and lost their ability to trust others. There are so many ways to get stuck in a funk. Fortunately, there are just as many ways to get unstuck – if you're determined to do so. Strategy One: Teach Someone Something It's easy to get a bit jaded in the internet marketing game. I've felt my share of ‘been there done that' boredom. The best cure for this by far is to reach out and help someone who is still trying to learn the ropes. When I'm coaching or even when I'm having a conversation with a friend who wants to know more about what I do – I feel stirred up. All the sudden, what seemed a bit dull takes on new flavor. You don't have to be a guru to teach someone else something useful. (Look at me!) If you've learned some of the basics, you can share some of your experience with a newbie. (By the way, ‘Newbie‘ is not a dirty word in my book!.) Strategy Two: Brain Dump This is a time tested tool for the overwhelmed business owner. When you feel like you can't possibly fit one more thing in your brain – it's time to give it a break. Grab a pad of paper (or use a word processor) and start spilling every thought and idea in your head onto the paper. Don't judge what you're writing – just dump it all. When you've run out of things to write – take a break. Have a cup of coffee. Call a friend. Go for a walk. Take a nap. Whatever works to clear your mind and let it ‘reset'. Now come back to your notes and start processing the ideas. Strategy Three: Forgive People Has someone let you down? Did a partner fail to hold up on their end of a project? Did a confidant take unfair advantage of secrets shared? Did a client bad mouth you? People can really suck sometimes. But – what is life without people? If someone has hurt you – the very best thing you can do is forgive them. When you think about it, holding a grudge usually hurts you more than the other person anyways. Letting bitterness find a home in your heart is bad news. I'm not suggesting that you forget what someone did. You can remember and act accordingly where that person is concerned. You can certainly learn something from your experiences and become a wiser business woman because of them. Just realize you can do all of this and still forgive the people who caused you harm. With these three strategies – you can get a fresh start and outlook on your business. Teaching others gets you fired up. Doing a brain dump gives you clarity of thought. Forgiving others frees your heart. Imagine what a fired up, clear thinking, open hearted woman can do! There are surely dozens of other great strategies for overcoming a funk. I'd love to hear your suggestions in the comments area below.

Episode #40: Is It Okay To Focus On Business Right Now?
As I wrap up another week of business in the midst of the crisis our world faces, I've had multiple conversations around a question many people are asking. Is it okay to focus on business right now? People are sick and dying. Our health care system is facing frightening limitations. Folks are out of work, worried about paying their bills, scared of losing everything. How in the middle of all this, do I sit down and focus on my business? For me, for today – it's not just possible, it's joyful. I started by asking myself if I'm doing what I can to be of service to the situation. I'm not a doctor, nurse, first responder, scientist – or any other important person out there on the front lines. So trying to do something directly related to the crisis is off the table. What CAN I do? What, based on my personal values, is most important to me? (I made a list.) Have I prayed? Have I met needs to the best of my ability for the people in my home? Have I reached out to connect with someone virtually, with love and the gift of time? Have I given where I can? Have I taken care of myself physically? Have I taken care of myself mentally, emotionally, & spiritually? (Listen to to the podcast to hear more about why I chose these questions and how I answer them.) If I can check these items off, the answer to the question is simple: YES. It's just OKAY to focus on my business, it's important! For as long as I can, I choose to do it Joyfully! I'm not out of touch of insensitive to what others are dealing with. I'm focused on creating what I want to see in the world and helping others do the same IS my purpose. There may come a day when someone close to me is sick and my priorities will change. Until then, I choose to make the most of the time I have. Don't let anyone make you feel awkward for focusing on your business. Don't feel like you have to be suffering because others are. Nobody sick wants you to feel terrible about it, I promise you. In The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, he talks about how indulging in chronic worrying is a way to self sabotage. It is so easy to slip into worry and stay there. I AM worried about the world and all the people I love. I don't choose to indulge in that worry til I've spiraled into a total funk. I focus on what I can do instead!

A Card Deck is a physical product you can develop, and I'm not talking about a standard deck of playing cards like you'd use for euchre or poker ;) Think about everything from flash cards you'd use with your kids or those beautiful oracle cards people use to be inspired. Rosie helped me create my own great card deck last year (based on content I've written over the years) and since then has been helping my friends and community members do the same. I've been looking forward to letting you all get to know her better, so enjoy the show!

Episode #39: Don’t Ghost Your Freelancers
Here are my thoughts about dealing with the Freelancers in your business during this season of uncertainty. If a freelancer has completed work for you. Pay them as soon as humanly possible. Your mortgage and car payments have made deferments possible. Freelancers can't absorb delays as easily. If you have committed to work with a freelancer that you can no longer support, communicate with them as fast as possible and be honest about the situation. Don't let them tackle work that you won't be able to pay for as expected. If you have someone on retainer and need to release them, again, communicate sooner, not later. Give them as much notice as possible. Have Honest Conversations! If this situation extends far, people will likely be willing to negotiate rates to keep cash flowing. Ask what's possible and see what you can create together. Above all, don't ghost your freelancers. Seriously. Be brave, communicate and be kind to everyone you deal with. Small business owner, you're not an asshole for tightening your business budget and taking care of your family! Everyone understands what everyone else is up against.
