Ep 53 - Liz and Alissa Answer Your Burning Questions! (It's our party, we can release a week late if we want to)
Happy second birthday to us! That's right, this podcast is entering it's terrible two's and in classic toddler fashion it has become incredibly temperamental and impossible to reason with. We encountered some technical difficulties the first time we did this so you are listening to take two (itself not free from tech issues, unfortunately) and we are answering some of you, our listeners, most pressing questions! We are giving you all the mildly interesting details about how we pick a show topic, what we wish we could buy at Trader Joe's, what our favorite episode was and so much more! The Birthday Gurl 6 apricots, chopped and pitted 1 pint raspberries 1 pint strawberries, sliced 1 ripe mango, peeled and diced 1 lime, sliced 1/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup ruby red grapefruit juice 1/4 cup elderflower liquor 2 bottles of rosé In a large pitcher, combine all the fruit and the sugar and muddle well. Add the juice, wine and liquor. Stir and refrigerate for several hours before serving. Serve on ice and top with seltzer if desired. Ep 52 - Liz and Alissa Make Meatballs (Belles of the Balls)
In this episode we're talking about four different versions of spherical heaven, meatballs. We've made Swedish, ginger meatballs in a coconut broth, veggie packed italian meatballs and meatball banh mis. We are balled out but it was worth it. The Pickle Front     Slice a jalapeño and add to 2 cups of vodka in a closed container. Allow to sit for at least 24 hours, then remove jalapeño.    Salt the rim and fill a glass with ice. Add 1/2 tbsp pickled vegetable liquid, 1.5 oz jalapeños vodka and 1/2 cup carrot juice and stir to combine. Top with 1 tbsp cilantro juice.   Meatball Banh Mi Swedish Meatballs Ginger Meatballs   For more pictures, visit us on Instagram and Facebook. Ep 51 - Liz and Alissa Make Tacos (In the yellow pocket of big taco)
Let's taco bout tortillas. We made them, corn and flour varieties. They were good! We also recreated two favorites from a dearly departed favorite taco spot, talked deviled eggs, yet again, made gallons of pico de gallo and reveled in our master frying skillz. The Pico de Cocktail Rim a glass with salt (we used habanero salt but kosher or smoked would be great too). Fill glass with ice then add 1.5 oz of tequila, 2 Oz pico de gallo juice and the juice of half a lime. Stir then fill rest of glass with beer.   Fresh Jalapeno Salsa In a food processor, combine three jalapeno peppers, one clove garlic, ½ cup grape or other small tomatoes, juice from half a lime, a handful of cilantro. Process until finely chopped. Add salt to taste.   Flour tortilla recipe Corn tortilla recipe Pioneer Woman pico de gallo   Cabbage slaw Half a cabbage, shredded and salted for several hours, excess water drained Juice of half a lime 2 scallions, thinly sliced ¼ cup Mexican crema ¼ cup chopped cilantro Combine everything in a bowl.   Potato Taco Filling   Cook 2 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks, in well salted boiling water until fork tender. Ep 49 - Liz and Alissa BAKE OFF Again! (Your Special F***ing Day)
Oops, we did it again. We are gluttons for punishment and our abysmal meat pie and Charlotte Royale didn’t do enough to scare us off of attempting more great British baking feats. And this time, we convinced a guest to join us! Kait, co-host of The Worst Bestsellers, took a stab at a star-studded Swiss roll and we made...drumroll please...a wedding cake. I don’t want to give anything away but, I don’t care, WE ALL KICKED ASS WITH THIS ONE. We also discuss further perils of candle making, what not to do with cake scraps (cough, cake pops, cough) and we’ve added a fancy new tool to our podcast pantry.   The Paul’s Cup Ginger sugar 1 lemon wedge 1/2 small cucumber, peeled and roughly chopped 1 1/2 ounces Pimms 1 ounce Cointreau or other orange liqueur 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice Ice Rub the lemon wedge on half of the rim of a glass then dip rim in ginger sugar. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the cucumber then add ice, Pimms, Cointreau and lemon juice. Shake for 15 seconds then strain into glass. Kait's Swiss roll Ina's lemon cake Lemon curd Vanilla buttercream Vanilla cake Cocoa cake (so good but not good for wedding cakes!) Ep 48 - Liz and Alissa Make Candles (Burn it to the Ground)
We’re waxing nostalgic for a time before half the things in our kitchens were covered in paraffin. Why, you ask? Because we made candles! Stupid, barely scented, fifty dollar candles. We never promised you a rose garden (scented candle) and we never promised you we’d actually succeed at half the shit we do for this show! But we can laugh at our failures, right? Or at least you all can! In addition to our adventures with wax, Alissa figured out the recipe for full box Chex mix, Liz’s vision board continues to bring the hits, Liz’s daughter discovered the wonders of self-rising flour and we learn that we are pretty clueless as to the size of an acre.   The Basic B-swax 1.5 cups of strawberry purée (purée strawberries in a blender with a splash of water) 1/4 cup honey simple syrup (equal parts honey and water, heated until honey dissolves) Juice of one lime 3 oz gin 16 oz ice 1/4 tsp habanero salt   Combine all ingredients in a blender and whiz it up! Makes two drinks.   Full Box Chex Mix Use a full regular size box each of Wheat Chex, Corn Chex and Rice Chex, about 3 cups pretzel sticks and 3 cups nuts. Ingredients for the “juice” are as follows: One lb of butter 10 Tbs Worcestershire 7.5 tsp season salt 3.75 tsp garlic powder 2.5 tsp onion powder Use instructions from the original recipe to make mix. (But don’t follow the microwave directions, make it in the oven. You’re better than that!) Shitty candles in the making Liz's misguided attempt at making bloody mary scented oil   The Christmas Candle (SNL sketch) Candle Making Supplies Hey! Give us a call and tell us something awesome! Ep 47 - Liz and Alissa Make Pioneer Woman Recipes (The P-Widdy Research Society)
Here's what's happenin' on the ranch: along with special second time guest, Lauren, we made recipes from everyone's favorite city gal turned Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. We all love some of Ree's recipes and make them regularly. Others, not so much. Join us as we journey through Ree's frontier and make, among other things, escalloped cabbage, the best lasagna ever, and Marlboro Man's favorite sandwich. Listen to find out if these recipes were approved by cowboys, hungry kids, and me, I mean, Ree! ---Show notes coming soon!---

Ep 46 - Liz and Alissa Make Breakfast (The Most Important Cocktail of the Day)
Just like your mom always told you, breakfast really is the most important cocktail of the day. Breakfast foods are maybe some of our most favorite foods so we’re a little shocked that it’s taken so long to actually do this episode. We made congee, shakshuka, grits and yeasted waffles, not to mention the sunniest, most refreshing tequila cocktail you’ve ever had before 10 am. The Sunshine Mary 3 stalks of celery Juice of one lemon  1 cup fresh carrot juice 1/2 cup fresh yellow tomato juice  Pinch of salt  2 oz tequila    Blend the celery and lemon juice together in food processor or blender.   Add carrot and tomato juice to celery mixture with pinch of salt and blend.    Pour blended mixture into a shaker filled with ice. Add tequila. Shake until cold. Strain into ice filled glasses that are rimmed with salt. Makes 2 cocktails.      Congee - Liz made the broth from this recipe and used the Instant Pot instructions from this recipe.   Shakshuka   Liz Harvatine's "You're Worth It" Grits for One   In a small pot, bring 1 cup chicken stock to a boil. Slowly whisk in 1/3 cup (not instant) grits. Cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the liquid is absorbed and the grits are tender. Add up to 1/2 cup of milk, cream or combination of the two and a pat of butter. Cook until thick and creamy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve in a bowl, topped with soft scrambled eggs, grated cheddar, scallions, diced tomatoes, parsley, flakey salt and freshly ground black pepper.    Yeasted Waffles   Two Ingredient Biscuits  Hey! Ep 45 - Liz and Alissa Make Lemons into Everything but Lemonade (Join Us on Our Acid Trip)
Pucker up, we picked a bushel of lemons and turned them into absolutely everything we could think of, minus lemonade. Limoncello, lemon cheesecake, Atlantic Beach pie (we know, what?), chicken piccata, and lemon salad. Ooh la la, it was delicious. Liz has also been unable to resist remaking 2 of our 3 fast food copy cats AND she tried (and failed) to duplicate our former macaron glory. The Sourpuss Make lemon sugar: finely chop the zest of one lemon and combine with 2 tbsp white sugar. Rim a champagne coupe or flute with lemon juice and lemon sugar. In the glass, combine 1 tbsp of limoncello, 1 tsp lemon juice and 3 dashes of angostura bitters. Fill glass rest of the way with champagne.   Limoncello Chicken Piccata Atlantic Beach Pie Cheesecake Number 17-Alissa used this recipe but lemon-ed it up by using lemon cookies for the crust, adding a lot of lemon zest to the batter, using limoncello in place of vanilla and topping the whole cheesecake with lemon curd (recipe for that below). Lemon Curd Preserved Lemons Lemon Cupcakes Lemon Salad Tomatoes (grape/cherry tomatoes unless it’s tomato season) Red Onion Cucumber Red or yellow bell pepper Iceberg lettuce Lemons Neutral oil Salt Finely ground pepper Slice tomatoes and thinly slice onions. Place in the bottom of a large salad bowl and toss with salt. Let them sit while you prepare the other ingredients. Chop cucumber and bell pepper and add to the bowl. Tear lettuce into manageable pieces and add to bowl. Toss all veg together before dressing. Drizzle oil over the salad. Squeeze lemons over salad. I generally end up using 1.5 lemons for a full head of lettuce, but do it to taste. It should be bright and lemony. Generously salt and very generously pepper the salad and toss everything together. Taste a piece of lettuce. Add more lemon, oil, salt or pepper as needed.   Hey! Give us a call and tell us something awesome! What do you get when you combine a hankering for basic AF chili, a woman with zero chill on Instagram stories and a podcast in constant need for new content? Homemade fast food, of course! We’ve long said that we wanted to make a chicken sandwich that was both delicious AND didn’t infringe upon the rights of others. This episode we were finally inspired to do it. Find out to what success we were able to recreate such fast food classics as “Wendy’s Chili!”, “The Big Mac!” and the chicken sandwich everyone hates to love, you know, it’s Chick-Fil-A.   The "Do You Want Fries With That?" For two drinks: 1 lemon, juiced 1 lime, juiced 3 oz of tequila 8 oz of Coca Cola  Combine lemon juice, lime juice and tequila. Divide evenly between two ice-filled glasses. Happy New Year! This week we went against every skeptical bone in our bodies and made vision boards with Kate Spencer, cohost of Forever35 and experienced vision boarder. Spoiler: we liked it. Will the secret work? Will Alissa actually knit something in 2019? Will Liz breathe the same air as Harry Styles? Only time will tell but we're feeling positive! We also find out what blasphemous things were added to Chex mix this holiday season, how many chickens gave their lives for Alissa's Christmas dinner and learn the answer to the question at the forefront of everyone's minds: what gift did Claud make for Liz???   The Vision Blurred To make spiced lemon simple syrup:In a small sauce pan, combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, 1 star anise, 5 whole cloves and the zest from one lemon (cut off in strips). Wrap water chestnuts in bacon and secure each with a toothpick. Bake in a dish for 45 minutes. Drain off grease. In a small bowl, combine chili sauce, mayo, brown sugar. Pour mixture over water chestnuts. Bake for 20 minutes longer at 350. Wasabi deviled eggs with jalapeños 12 hard boiled eggs ¼ cup wasabi mayonnaise ¼ cup regular mayonnaise 4 scallions finely chopped 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil 1 tbsp rice vinegar 1 jalepeno thinly sliced Cut eggs in half lengthwise. Remove yolks and put them in a bowl. Reserve whites on a platter. Combine the yolks with mayonnaises, scallions, sesame oil and vinegar. Mash with a fork or use a hand mixer to whip yolks. Taste the yolks and season with salt if necessary (I usually find the mayonnaise makes the yolks salty enough). Fill the egg white halves with the yolk filling either with two spoons or a piping bag. Garnish each egg half with a slice of jalepeno.   Hey! Give us a call and tell us something awesome! Ep 41 - Liz and Alissa Make Hanukkah Foods (My Favorite Essential Oil is Peanut)
It’s the Festival of Lights and we have had our very own oil related miracle. We made our very own Hanukkah feast, complete with brisket, two types of latkes, applesauce and jelly donuts. We are stuffed but basking in the glow of the menorah. Be sure to listen to the end of the episode, we have a very exciting something that we want to try and it involves YOU!   The Gimel and Tonic This is more of a technique than a recipe. This drink is a very lime heavy gin and tonic, previously called the Gim and Tonic, for its similarity to a gimlet.   Fill a large glass with ice. Pour 2 oz gin over the ice then add the juice of 1-2 limes, depending on personal taste and the size of your limes. Top with a splash of tonic water. Ep 35 - Liz and Alissa Make Fall (Ignore the weather, eat the pumpkin)
In Southern California, we cling to what meager scraps of Autumnal changes mother nature deigns to kick in our direction so we have no choice but to manufacture that crisp fall feeling that you know we love. Knitting, pumpkin, cider, we are making it happen, because science won't do it for us. PLUS! We got a phone number! Give us a call and leave us a voicemail!  The Amazing Cider, Man In a shaker, combine: 2 shots apple cider 1 shot spiced rum 1/2 shot Apple brandy 3 dashes angostura bitters   Shake for 15 seconds. Pour over ice. Top with sparkling cider.     Alissa Pumpkin Garlic Sage Soup 1 package of maple bacon, cooked, crumbled, fat reserved. 1 onion, diced 10-15 cloves of garlic (half chopped, half grated or pressed) 2 generous springs of rosemary 1 bunch of sage leaves, 5 leaves chopped the rest left whole 3 cans of pumpkin 48 Oz chicken stock Pinch Cayenne pepper 1 tsp Paprika 1 tsp Dried (rubbed) sage) 3/4 cup heavy cream Roasted salted pepitas to garnish. Cook up the entire package of bacon. Reserve bacon to garnish and save bacon grease. Put a few tablespoons of bacon fat in a large soup pot. Sauté the diced onion, chopped garlic, chopped sage and toss in the rosemary sprigs whole. Cook with a generous pinch of salt till the onions are soft and you can really smell the herbs. Add the chicken stock and pumpkin. Whisk till it’s smooth and incorporated. Add salt and pepper and the cayenne, rubbed sage and paprika. Add the pressed/grated garlic. Bring to a simmer and let the flavors marry, this will take about 20-30 minutes. Keep tasting and adjusting seasoning. Remove the rosemary. Working in batches, purée the hot soup in a blender. Only fill the blender half full and vent the top/cover with a kitchen towel to prevent the steam from building up. Once everything is puréed, return it to the pot (that you should rinse first!). Heat the puréed soup on medium low heat. Add the heavy cream and cook till heated through. Meanwhile, fry the whole sage leaves in the oil of your choice till they are crisp. Serve the soup garnished with the fried sage, the reserved bacon (crumbled) and roasted, salted pepitas.     Liz's Scarf Pattern   Pumpkin Syrup   Apple Cider Donuts   Pumpkin Muffins   Peanut Butter Pumpkin Fudge   Theme song: The Show Must Be Go Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
