058: Ryan Longenecker: Leadership from Student Perspective
This is another special episode for me. I interviewed a former student of mine who I was blessed to work with for almost half of this education career through our gifted program, FIRST LEGO League, student voice organizations, and more. In this episode, we explore the topic of leadership and his story about how a young man at this age has been able to develop and understand the qualities of leadership. As you listen to this podcast, remember that Ryan was 16 at the time. We recorded this episode back in August of 2017. Ryan is now a year older and wiser and heading into his senior year. I have been holding on to this episode for this new season and am so excited to finally get to the ears of others. I hope this episode reminds all of us in education how powerful and insightful our students can be if we support them Enjoy! Topics We Explore What is leadership? How do you rise about the crowd of sameness? How do we learn how to lead? What is his current WOW project of the moment? How do we create enrollment in our ideas? How do we take the first step in leadership? Show Notes & Quotes "Leadership is someone who drives other people to their passions" "Leadership is helping others rise up" "Most successful people in life stood out and stopped blending in." 050: Living On The Edge of Chaos – Don't Settle
In this episode I am sharing out the importance of not settling. This episode is one that I have listened to my own words as my stress levels have gone up preparing for the Grand Opening and all that needs to be done. In this episode I am sharing one of the ways to leverage technology to enhance authentic learning for students. This is not a list of apps or tools, but examples of teachers who have crafted quality projects and infused technology to take learning to the next level by empowering students to take the driver seat in learning. This was part of a hour long Skype call I held with a college education masters program.a Check out the show and episodes on iTunes Shownotes To learn how to search Twitter without an account I have provided a video tutorial Examples of projects where technology was used to leverage the learning to authentic experiences

048: Living On The Edge of Chaos – How To Be Miserable with Randy Paterson
We have been reading the book, How To Be Miserable: 40 Strategies You Already Use, in our Coffeechug Mastermind Group and we have had our ideas and habits challenged with this book by Randy Paterson. Check out the show and episodes on iTunes I would love it if you would review and rank the show and/or the episodes. It greatly helps us gain traction to bring in more people to the show. I reached out to Randy asking for a chance to ask him some question for the podcast based on the conversations we have had online in the group. In this episode we discuss the following: How did this book concept come to reality? How did it develop based on his work? Does self esteem exist? People with high self esteem are not doing positive affirmations. They are doing nothing. Why the list of self affirmations are lies How do we remove the plug and stop thinking negatively? How do we ingest a proper balance of proper social nutrients to stop isolating ourselves by staying online? How we actually use our 24 hours in a day? Average American consumes 10 hours of screen time Mix in sleep of 8 hours We are not left with many hours left! Is there a correlation between isolation vs. mental health issues How a Men in Black Activity will make you rethink your habits How to rethink the mental healthy system to allow for better heath Why it is easier to label a person with a disorder vs. personality? You can his work on his website that will lead you to all of his work, books, social media and more. Here is a link to the video that started it all. 039: Living on the Edge of Chaos Podcast with John Cole
John Cole, founder of Dexter Industries joins us for the latest episode of the podcast. In this episode we learn a great deal about life, learning, and entrepreneurship. What I love best about this particular episode is how he is able to share a glimpse of his journey into how he has arrived at his current point in life. This journey connects to so many students who are trying to navigate their interests and passions. We discuss the following: How did he end up as the founder of Dexter Industries? The key skills needed to be adaptable and mobile in the job market and being successful in life. Why there is no discussion of the specific content needed to be hired for a job. Focus on the traits companies are looking for and no so much on what content you contain in your head. What is missing from the next wave of people looking for a job?(hint: you must be able to WRITE) Building a portfolio of perseverance and grit. We must prove our worth! [shareable]There is an advantage to being an amateur because you don't know any different.[/shareable] [shareable]You inherit an institution knowledge when viewing problems with a master's eye which could cost you from finding the solution.[/shareable] [shareable]Force yourself to write a comment for each line of code to exercise your brain to explain what you are doing![/shareable] Check out the show and episodes on iTunes
