72. Justine Sweetman: Makeup Artist, Creative Producer and Founder of the Fashion Workers Initiative
Starting out doing makeup for friend’s student films, the early days of Justine Sweetman’s makeup artist journey consisted of hustling in NYC and finding jobs through, of all places, Craigslist. Eventually, Justine got connected with the right people, which snowballed into being able to work freelance full time. The clients she has worked with include the likes of Nylon, i-D, ORIBE, Zadig & Voltaire, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, New York Times, Women’s Health, and American Eagle, just to name a few. A couple of years into her makeup career, Justine found a new love for producing and soon after she co-founded REALnew Collective, a production company and community of artists that creates, develops, and produces film and digital media. They’ve worked with brands such as Club Monaco, Montiel, Jonesy, and Vitruvi to produce films that are rooted in care, respect and collaboration. On top of all that Justine has going on in her life, she is also the founder of the Fashion Workers Initiative, a community and advocacy group for freelancers working in the fashion industry. As an organization of volunteers, their mission is to end the exploitation of independent contractors in the New York fashion industry. In this episode of the podcast, Justine breaks down the reality of working freelance in fashion, the red flags and precautions to look out for before taking on freelance work, and the power in saying no. 71. Giada Graziano: Founder and CEO of Glam Observer
Born and raised in the South of Italy, long before Milan was officially named a fashion capital, Giada had very little means of breaking into the fashion industry. Despite getting her master's in Management Engineering at Università Della Calabria, Giada knew that she wanted to pursue a career in fashion, and with two parents as entrepreneurs, creating a business of her own was in her blood. Soon after graduating, she picked up her things and went to Milan and scored her first internship working in E-commerce at Yoox Net-A-Porter and Kering. A couple of months later, she left the corporate world to pursue her business, Glam Observer, full time. Today, Glam Observer has transformed into a fashion career advice platform, podcast, and online educational program with courses and events aimed at inspiring and supporting fashion enthusiasts who want to turn their dream of working in the fashion industry into a successful reality. Giada has become a mentor, author, leader in her space, and let’s not forget her recognition under Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the education category for her work in teaching individuals about getting a job in a fashion which has helped many score jobs at companies such as Dior, Valentino, Prada, and more. In this episode of the podcast, Giada talks about the inspiration behind starting Glam Observer, her advice on starting your own business, and the importance of the right and the left brain in fashion. 69. Faidra Tzedakis: Production for R13 and Founder and CEO of DANAE
As a kid of two immigrants and growing up in Rhodes, Greece, Faidra was sent to NYC for three months with the difficult task of finding an internship in the fast-paced world of fashion. This was no small demand, but after a few weeks, Faidra secured her first internship with Fleet Street ltd, an outerwear wholesale retail company with clients from the likes of Vince Camuto to Kendall + Kylie, with little-to-no experience underneath her belt. A couple of years later and after pursuing an education at FIT, Faidra went on to work as a Design and Development Assistant at Sandy Liang and is currently doing Development and Production at cool-girl denim brand, R13. And now at 25 years old, Faidra started her own brand, DANAE, with the mission to design and create something that would not only showcase the beauty of other women that she always admired, but that would also create a community that gives back to her island and country. In this episode of the podcast, Faidra discusses her stance on unpaid internships in fashion, the value of looking for opportunities with smaller companies, not being afraid to demand the things you want in life, and the dos and don’ts of trying to score an internship in fashion.
