Dii Desertec: The Future of Green Energy in the Desert with Paul van Son
What does the future hold for energy in the desert? Paul van Son, President and CEO of Dii Desert Energy has a vision to turn the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa into a clean energy powerhouse, capable of not only transforming the regional economy, but eventually powering much of the world. With renewable energies quickly improving their efficiencies as well as their economics, the opportunity to produce cheap, clean and abundant power in the worlds sunniest regions is becoming apparent.Sitting down for a conversation with David Wortmann of DWR eco, van Son describes the journey of Desertec; from its beginnings as a Munich based consortium with aims of importing clean power from the desert, to moving operations to Dubai to better focus on empowering (and powering) the region itself. The two leaders of Europe’s energy transition share their insights and observations on what is to come, while shedding light on the renewable energy potential of a region more known for oil rigs than solar panels. Now entering its third phase, the Desertec initiative is shifting its focus to highlight the inherent benefits of renewables, honing in on green molecules, energy storage and flexible demand. Ten years after its inception, it’s becoming abundantly clear that the Desertec initiative remains at the forefront of green power innovation in the MENA region.
