The Battle of Waterloo - Episode Ten
This week Dan teaches Ed about the Battle of Waterloo.Thank you to Shaun for submitting a question to "can you beat Dan".Born in 1769 Arthur Wellsley joined the army and led troops in battles against India, returning from India and successful campaigns in Portugal he was made Duke of Wellington. The beef wellington and wellington boots were named after the Duke of Wellington. Napoleon as Emporer of France managed to conquer the majority of western and central Europe, however, this reign collapsed having attempted to invade Russia which didn't work. And by 1815 Napoleon was back and the British and others were wary of him taking over Europe again. The British, Austrians, Prussians and Russians were all getting their armies ready to fight, but Napoleon wanted to try and get there first and had heard the armies were based just outside Brussels in Waterloo. Napoleon took his army to Belgium and defeated the Prussian army and then marched on to Waterloo to take on the British army. Napoleon had made a crucial mistake due to weather and waited to start his attack because it was raining. This delay allowed more Prussian troops to march to Waterloo and join forces with Wellington. Wellington's troops were able to defend until the Prussians arrived, and the French made another critical mistake during the fighting after capturing a farmhouse, Napoleon refused to send reinforcements and this allowed the British to push the French back and win the Battle of Waterloo.
