The Battle of Waterloo - Episode Ten
This week Dan teaches Ed about the Battle of Waterloo.Thank you to Shaun for submitting a question to "can you beat Dan".Born in 1769 Arthur Wellsley joined the army and led troops in battles against India, returning from India and successful campaigns in Portugal he was made Duke of Wellington. The beef wellington and wellington boots were named after the Duke of Wellington. Napoleon as Emporer of France managed to conquer the majority of western and central Europe, however, this reign collapsed having attempted to invade Russia which didn't work. And by 1815 Napoleon was back and the British and others were wary of him taking over Europe again. The British, Austrians, Prussians and Russians were all getting their armies ready to fight, but Napoleon wanted to try and get there first and had heard the armies were based just outside Brussels in Waterloo. Napoleon took his army to Belgium and defeated the Prussian army and then marched on to Waterloo to take on the British army. Napoleon had made a crucial mistake due to weather and waited to start his attack because it was raining. This delay allowed more Prussian troops to march to Waterloo and join forces with Wellington. Wellington's troops were able to defend until the Prussians arrived, and the French made another critical mistake during the fighting after capturing a farmhouse, Napoleon refused to send reinforcements and this allowed the British to push the French back and win the Battle of Waterloo. Somehow we also end up discussing... handbags, cashmere jumpers, how long the Queen has been monarch for, Pasties De Natas, Ed's roast potatoes and Dan's homebrew beer, the best pub in Cromer and Ed's failed attempt to break up a fight, Dan's need for a watch Guy, French politician's not liking the London Eurostar station, Danny Dyer again, Britney Spears, Abba, Mamma Mia and Dan and Ed singing karaoke, and much much more...Find the podcast on iTunes, Spotify and elsewhere!Follow @LessonsFromWhatHappened on Facebook and InstagramSubmit questions and voice notes to us at http://www.speakpipe.com/LessonsFromWhatHappenedGet in touch: lessonsfromwhathappened@gmail.com

Roman Emperor Nero commits suicide - Episode Nine
This week Dan teaches Ed about the Roman Emperor, Nero - who committed suicide.Thank you to both Eleanor and Sarah for submitting a question to "can you beat Dan".The Roman Empire ruled the majority of Europe and North Africa from 27BC to 476AD, mainly because of their ruthless and effective army. Nero was an Emperor in Rome between 54AD and 68AD, taking over from his uncle Claudius, who supposedly was poisoned by Nero's mother. A short while after taking charge he falls out with his mother removes her from coins and then has her killed. He, like Henry the 8th, has his wife Octavia killed after they couldn't produce an heir. He divorces her and accuses her of adultery and treason and has her executed. Nero is into art competitions and has them added to the Olympics and won over 1,800 singing and music competitions. During Nero's reign there was a huge fire in Rome which ended up burning down 70% of the city, and many believe Nero started this himself so he could rebuild Rome in his image. The repercussions of the fire, essentially led to Nero's downfall, as to pay for the rebuild of Rome he had to raise taxes and people began to revolt and tried to overthrow Nero. When this happened, rather than be taken prisoner he killed himself. Somehow we also end up discussing... Buxton, again... the Guinness world book of records, rubber ducks, Fosse Way, Latin, Ed's bad dancing, eating lot's of mushrooms, Dan not being able to run fast and Ed's hate of cross country running and much much more...Find the podcast on iTunes, Spotify and elsewhere!Follow @LessonsFromWhatHappened on Facebook and InstagramSubmit questions and voice notes to us at http://www.speakpipe.com/LessonsFromWhatHappenedGet in touch: lessonsfromwhathappened@gmail.com

Big Ben chimes for the first time - Episode Eight
This week Dan teaches Ed about Big Ben, chiming for the first time. Thank you to Niall for submitting a question to "can you beat Dan", tune in to find out the score to a very good question from Niall. A fire engulfs the Houses of Parliament and burns it down. A competition is launched with 97 entries, but two guys Charles Perry and August Pugin win the chance to rebuild and the decide to include a clock tower. They started construction in 1840 and completed it 19 years later in 1859. Using 13 tonnes of copper for the bell of the clock alone dragged to the construction site by 16 horses. The Big Ben clock, famously has four faces made of 312 bit of opal glass and 7m in diameter. To keep the time accurate, an engineer winds the clock three times a week and there are pennies used as weights on the mechanism. There is also a handy prison in the tower for any naughty MPs. Big Ben is only meant to chime up to 12 times in one go, but with a walkie talkie and standing in the right place you can make it chime 13 times... Somehow we also end up discussing... professional gamers cheating, Joe Exotic aka Tiger King, Dan winning a Blue Peter badge twice and losing it twice... How many strongmen it would take to deadlift the weight of the Big Ben clock bell, Ed getting locked in Edinburgh Castle Jail and much much more...Find the podcast on iTunes, Spotify and elsewhere!Follow @LessonsFromWhatHappened on Facebook and InstagramSubmit questions and voice notes to us at http://www.speakpipe.com/LessonsFromWhatHappenedGet in touch: lessonsfromwhathappened@gmail.com
