Can I Live?...Yes You Can: The Story of Racquel "RW" Jones
In this episode of Leaders on The Rise, Racquel "RW" Jones shares her story of being a single mom with four children on welfare and struggling to make ends meet while navigating social services, child support, and various other challenges. She also tells the harrowing tale of her attempt to drown her children in her apartment tub, an act that was stopped by God and ultimately led her to seek help and turn her life around. Today, Jones is the President and Founder of Can I Live, Inc., a 501(c)(3) national public housing tenants association that is dedicated to reducing dependency on government subsidies for HUD-assisted families. Through this organization, Jones works to provide low-income families with the resources and education they need to protect and grow their income, while also receiving various social services benefits such as subsidized housing, SNAP, and Medicaid. In 2017, Jones was able to secure over $1.25 million in Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants to help families remove barriers and achieve self-sufficiency. Her mission is to use all available resources to help families achieve real, lasting change and move out of poverty. As Jones explains, "Our mission is to advance affordable housing, economic inclusion, and personal responsibility through advocacy, community and civic engagement, and education. We believe that all Americans are created equal and possessed of inalienable rights to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and to justice under the law. Yet the entitlements provided to people living at or below poverty are structured to keep them poor while entitlements offered to wealthier Americans and corporations assist in wealth creation and enhanced prosperity."
