They’re Baaack! Congress Returns!
It's 2015 and this week John and Michael look ahead to the top stories which will dominate the new year, including the 114th session of the U.S. Congress! The Republicans are now in control and the question is will things change or remain the same? President Obama cracks down on North Korea with more sanctions because of the country's reported involvement in the Sony hacking scandal. Meanwhile Kim Jung Un reaches out to South Korea in an apparent peacemaking effort. Five more prisoners are released from our facility at Guantanamo Bay as the administration looks to strengthen its case to shut the doors at Gitmo. One of the champions of the liberal cause, longtime New York Governor Mario Cuomo passed away this week. We look back on his remarkable career in public service. It's the college football championship no one was expecting: Ohio State and Oregon shock the world as they get set to do battle to prove who is best in the land. Adios 2014! A Look Back at What Made 2014 Great.
Happy New Year from all of us at "The Layfield and Cole Report". The End of the Embargo? Obama Confused on North Korea Hack of Sony?
President Obama is at it once again, using another executive order in an attempt to loosen restrictions on Cuba. But Republicans in Congress are livid and plan a showdown early next year. Is there any chance the over fifty year old embargo will finally be lifted? Or will it be politics as usual? The opening came as the United States and Cuba pulled a prisoner swap, bringing home Alan Gross after five years in a Cuban prison. The President says Sony pictures caved to hackers as the movie studio cancels a Christmas Day release of "The Interview" and he vows the United States will retaliate against North Korea. Meanwhile Sony claims Obama has his facts mixed up. President Putin has a mess on his hands in Russia as the economy there is falling apart. But in typical Putin and Cold War style he is blaming the west. Can he rally or will his popularity finally falter? Is America ready for yet another Bush in the White House? It's an interesting question as the 2016 Presidential race heats up with Jeb saying he's thinking about a run. Rolling Stone suffers more embarrassment over the iconic magazine's mess of a story about a gang rape at The University of Virginia. It's already retracted the story, but the hits just keep on coming. CIA Torture Report, NFL Conduct Code, Congressional Spending Plan Sellout?
A senate committee releases a controversial report detailing the CIA's use of torture to gather evidence in the wake of the 9/11 disaster. The debate rages over whether this information should have remained classified, whether it will put Americans in danger overseas, and whether such tactics are necessary. A new spending plan has Democrats and Republicans upset with their party leaders, calling them sell outs. The compromises could cause renewed gridlock and politics as usual in an already stagnate Washington. New York City police officers say the mayor is not wanted at funerals for cops who die on duty. We will explain why. Columbia University Law School delays exams for some students who claim they are emotionally distraught over the Ferguson and Eric Garner cases. Was this the right move? Oil prices continue to plummet, but now it's hurting Wall Street and maybe the economy and it's throwing world financial markets into disarray. Racial equality is again in the forefront as another questionable grand jury decision is reached involving a white cop and the death of a black man which sparked more nationwide protests. How did this happen, since a video exists seemingly showing the police officer using excessive force? NASA is excited after a successful test flight of Orion, the spacecraft it hopes will soon bring people back to the moon, to asteroids and even to Mars.
