Many of us are stuck in a world that is narrow. We see the world only through our little knowledge of it. As St Augustine said, "the world is a book and those who don't travel only read one page" In this podcast Michael Davis shares from his heart, a wider vision of the world through the eyes of the people of Kenya. 

Michael Davis and Charles Catterall discuss the meaning of work, just wages and the interconnectedness of work and how homelessness is not just a lack of a job. It is much deeper and wider than that. Michael provides advice on how   The homeless don't need to “just get a job”: They need to discover who they are so that they can flourish as a person and do work that is meaningful, work that promotes the greater good and they need just wages: without just wages, they will still be homeless.    

The Family: The family is central to society The Family is the first society Families produce the citizens of society   Society is the reflection of the family. Michael and Charles discuss the meaning of family and that the breakdown of the family unit is the cause of the majority of homelessness but that the family unit is the solution for homelessness and prevention of homelessness.

There will never be another being the same as you. S: Social Person We have a right and responsibility to be socially interactive with each other. E: Equal dignity among persons Every human being is equally dignified F: Freedom We have a right to freedom and we have a responsibility on how we live out that freedom so we don't impose on other's freedom. To be human is to be wounded by sin To be human means we have a universal responsibility to receive and give healing   Four aspects of being human: Image of God imprinted upon us To be human is to be a being in relation with that relationship with God Just as God is a social being in himself, God made us to be social in family and in community To be a caretaker of the planet.   Universal aspect of being human: What ever applies to one human, applies to all humans. Creation – We are all made in His image and it doesn't matter what your status is in this world. Sin – Sin as a deep wound in the human person. Every human being is wounded. We all have a tendency to look at others as though they are not worthy. Mike addresses how the homeless are looked upon as homeless because of their sin Charles discusses what happens in our relationships with each other when we don't see each other in the way we are made: with infinite value and worth. Healing and Mercy What God has to offer us is grace for our weak will and wounded soul. If we received healing and mercy, we are expected to help others in that healing and mercy. View each other as wounded people not with judgement and categorizing   .

Guest, Charles Catterall joins our host Michael Davis today for a topic discussion on the beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

  It is easy to see the poor as in need of us, but we often fail to realize that we need them. Seeing the poor as our human equals and that the real goal should be to be in relationship with them so that there is mutual giving and receiving will lead to a fuller life for both. 

Michael revisits a topic that aired in episode 27 about Errors in Thinking. In episode 27 which aired on February 3rd, Michael discussed the signs he sees around Portland, Oregon and commented about he hears from people. Knowing Me Ministries Podcast Episode: 027 Title: Errors in Thinking on Homelessness Michael discusses the signs he sees around Portland, Oregon and comments he hears from people. He addresses the more subtle errors he see and hears. Error In Thinking One: We need to move the homeless around from time to time so they will be motivated to change. Reality: It does the opposite, Michael teaches. When you have to settle, pack and move on again and agin it creates disorientation and people give up. Having a comfortable spot as a human being helps us stay focused. Error In Thinking Two: They are all so messy and trashy. Reality: They don't have any more than the average homeowner, it is just that they live in a glass house, they don't have a way to hide their mess the way the rest of us do. Michael discusses the lack of garbage service and a lack of space to protect their belongings as homeowners have. Just because you can see it, doesn't make it worse than your own messes. Michael provides ways you can help. Errors In Thinking Three: They Don't Want To Change. Michael often hears, “why do you help them, why should I help them, they don't want to change” Reality: They do want to change, but they often feel stuck. Michael suggests thinking about things you've had to change and times you've been unwilling to change or struggled to change. Michael shares his personal experience of being stuck in homelessness. Solution: Trusting them that they want to change. Become a friend to them, help them realize their goals. Developing a relationship and asking them what do you want in life and how can I help you accomplish that. Errors in Thinking Four: They are illegally camping. Michael gives the definition of camping and discusses what camping means and he questions the idea of illegal camping. Reality: Camping is getting away from your every day life: they can't get away from their every day life. Challenge to the listeners: Separate camping from surviving.people are not camping to understand that they are a community of humans trying to survive together and take care of each other. Today's episode helps us to see beyond the snapshot that we take of someone when we first see them and the judgements we place on them at that moment. It helps us to see that there is more to a person than what you see in a single moment. Today's episode helps us to understand that change doesn't happen over night and if we truly want to help someone, we must be there for the long haul. On today's podcast, Michael talks with his long time friend, Steve Fletcher Michael and Steve met each other nine years ago when Steve was homeless and deep in his addictions. Meeting Michael was the most significant event that started him on the path of recovery, Steve told us. It was then that Steve's life began to turn around as Michael ministered to him in a way that made sense to Steve.  Steve talks about how his addictions affected his life, how it caused him to lose his job and how he became homeless. He talks about what his life was like before becoming homeless and he talks about that defining moment in which he put drugs down for good. Two years ago, Steve found out he has liver cancer and without treatment he was going to die within six months. "Living was the first thing that crossed my mind", Steve said. "I'm not a statistic, I'm a human being." While homeless, Steve stayed productive by working side jobs and helping others who were homeless.  Steve shares his personal experience and understanding of how to help people who are homeless and who are into their addictions and Mike talks about how being a friend and being there over the long haul is important. It takes patience and a lot of love.
