Farming vs Hunting in Entrepreneurship
Last week, I was with my boss, Mr Ben Jemirade and he made a statement, "most people are hunters not farmers". It's been on my mind since then. After so much meditation, I thought to share a bit about it. As an individual, small business owner, employer, employee, student and in whatever sphere of life you are, do you farm or hunt? Farming requires a process, livestock or crop. Livestock for example, you have to build where to rear your choice of animal. The structure has to suit, with proper channels for feeding, drinking and waste passages. You then get your stock, have a veterinary doctor check them, weigh them, tag them, group them and every other thing you have to do. In grouping, separating the ones for procreation is critical because you want continuity and subsequently you don't have to buy stock but raise them from your own farm. In crop farming, you need to clear the land, till, plant your seed and then cultivate it. You don't plant at any time, you wait for the right time and confirm your seeds are in good condition. You patiently cultivate and wait for growth before the fruits bearing in mind that there are different types of plants- annuals, biennials and perennials. Perennials take time to grow, however once it's grown, it bears fruits year in year out, so long as it's its season. This takes a whole lot of commitment. Farming is tedious but, it eventually pays off. Hunting on the other hand, requires making a good kill and eating or selling it off. A hunter will always have to make a kill, he doesn't own the animals, he always has to go find them. Hunter or farmer, which will you rather be? Will you rather sow now and reap consistently tomorrow or make a kill today and another tomorrow till the animals are extinct or you no longer have the strength to? As a business owner, are you growing your business or simply in search of the next paying client? Think on these and choose what to do, farm or hunt.
