Milestone to Manhood Steven Arms Do you have a son or maybe a grandson or nephew that is about to turn thirteen?  We know entering those teenage years can be a very difficult time, for the boys and for the families. Testosterone is kicking in and they are learning how to handle all of these new feelings, etc. They are seeking their independence and trying to stretch their wings a bit. That can cause some friction if you are not prepared for it yourself.  Boys are this age are beginning to transition to manhood. But they really don’t know what it means. They think you are still wanting to treat them as your little boy, while they want to think of themselves as “grown up.” Wouldn’t it be great if both of you could make that transition together? Our guest today, Steven Arms, has written a great book titled, “Milestone to Manhood.” This book details his firsthand experience his family originated to have each of the male children go through at age 13. It culminates in a “Rite of Passage Weekend” to celebrate the transition to manhood for the boys. We know the Jewish boys have their “Bar Mitzvah.”  This can be celebrated along those same lines. Including you, how many of your family members, cousins, etc. ever participate in this event? This is a two book series, correct?  The book itself and a workbook? When a boy is turning thirteen, what is the difference in their outlook and attitude for not going through this as compared to those who do go through the weekend process? That’s one reason many boys, especially in the city and urban areas, join gangs, etc. – to show they are “their own man?” Walk us through the weekend. What does the weekend look like as far as activities and teachings and things like that? What kind of preparations are there for this weekend? Are there certain things the boy has to demonstrate or accomplish before the weekend happens?  Like a boy scout earning ribbons type thing? Do you just walk into the bedroom at 330am and wake him up and say, “Let’s Go!?” Is there anything like, “Go out and return with the tail feather of an eagle? Or something like that?” So, this book, “Milestone to Manhood,” is to take care of the boys. You mentioned the daughters have one of these? Do they take the daughters out to the mall or something instead of camping? When your son messes up, I mean, “boys will be boys” and, after all, they are “teenagers.”  But when they do mess up, how does the punishments change?  Like prior to, there may have been spankings or being grounded, etc. What about after this weekend? Scripture Frames for Life Steven Snook pt 2 Steven Snook’s first memories are of life were in Virginia foster care, before being taken to his then-new home in Danville, Illinois. There, he grew up in extreme poverty over the course of his upbringing. By the age of 15, he was involved with drugs. After turning 19, he was transporting marijuana from South Texas into Central Illinois. And by 26, he was arrested by the DEA for smuggling cocaine and sentenced to 22 years in the federal prison system. Over the course of that time, he was transferred to eight different federal facilities across states like Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia. That included time in solitary confinement, serving an entire year in solitary during one period. For most people, that would sound like a harsh punishment. But Steven says, that for him, it turned into an opportunity. Two years prior to Snook’s release, he recounts a series of vivid dreams. In them, he says, God showed him frames with rotating images of scripture inside, hanging on the walls of homes. I’ll let him share with us now, “the rest of the story” about what has become, “Rapha Frames.” In prison, you became a “go to guy” if someone had questions about Faith and Jesus or needed prayer, right? Tell us about the dreams… You had not been exposed to the Internet like we have today, email, websites, etc. You may have some exposure, but not the familiarity like most people take for granted today. How hard was that for you to adjust to once you were released? How did you raise the funding for your product and company? Your company is called, Jesus Speaks, LLC. You do speaking engagements as well as run the product side of the company correct? Steven, you are an inspiration to so many people. I’ve always said that a person cannot minister effectively to those that have issues or facing problems unless they, themselves, have gone through the same situations. Your life story laid the foundation for what you are doing today. That’s not saying all that happened before was great – but it all brought you to where you are today.  You would not be reaching the people with the Word of the Lord today IF you had not gone through those processes. Now, I’m not recommending anyone follow the same path. What I am saying to everyone listening, is Jesus has a plan for YOU. No matter where you are or what you have done – Jesus has a plan FOR YOU!  Uniquely, for YOU! He met Steven in a solitary cell stuck deep, deep behind prison walls. Cut off from everyone. But he was not cut off from Jesus. Amen! Steven, what would you say to someone that may be, let’s say they were recently released or perhaps they are still in prison and listening to you right now. Rethinking Rest Gregory Hall pt 3 As Christians, we have heard the continuous arguments back and forth about a “Day of Rest.” Another term used is as “Sabbath of Rest.” The arguments form around if that is simply an Old Testament tradition that no longer is applicable for this modern age or Saturday’s are the day that needs to be recognized or Sunday is the day true “Christians” should observe because it is in recognition of the resurrection of Christ. The divides are deep on this topic. They have resulted in denominational splits. These arguments have split families. These arguments have affected peoples employment opportunities as well. To help us understand the true Biblical concept of REST is our guest, Gregory Hall. Greg was a pastor for 10 years and he served as an adjunct professor at a few local universities where he lives in the Northwest US. He has a podcast called, “Rethinking Scripture” and is the author of a great book, “Rethinking Rest: Why Our Approach to Sabbath Isn’t Working.” I see in your book where you discuss Plato and his description of “shadows.” That caught my attention because I recently did a teaching on the “types and shadows” that Moses was told to pattern the elements of the Tabernacle after.  A shadow has no substance. It is only an indicator that something of substance is behind it. The Sabbath is mentioned as one of those shadows. How should we interpret those references concerning the commandment to observe the Sabbath day if it is a shadow of the true rest of God? In Chapter 7 of your book, you discuss “testing the waters of rest.” Can explain that for us and how we can go through the process of “testing the waters of rest?” Greg, as I said, this has been interesting. Going Deeper in Prayer Jeff Mootz pt 1 For believers, we know we are supposed to spend time with God each and every day. For those that have been following me for any length of time, you have heard me reference this as “tithing your time to God.”  You give your tithes to God, right?
