We decided to rename our reading series to something less repulsive. Condolences to anyone who grew attached to the Greedy Little Book Boys. For our next book we're digging in on The Outsider, to pair with our watch of the HBO series. Turns out the series is remarkably faithful to it's source material, which gives us a chance to have a more free-flowing conversation about the first half of Stephen King's 58th(!) novel. The novel is also our first literary introduction to Holly Gibney, which is fun. Once again Stephen King is in his detective bag for THE OUTSIDER, a truly bleak murder mystery that is head and shoulders above MR. MERCEDES and other similar offerings. Comparisons between the two are, in fact, hard to avoid, as both feature ace private investigator Holly Gibney (played by Cynthia Erivo here). This portrayal of Holly turns out to be one of several strong performances (Mare Winningham!!!!), which Dan and Rob agree is the show's strongsuit. Hill of the King Me! This week we've got an adaptation based on the father/son team up we've all been waiting for. And how does it go? Eh, ok. There is a decent amount to like here even if it does feel like a weird stew of other King stories. Tall grass fields, much like corn fields, are haunted. It kinda feels like this tall grass and the corn kids are competing for the same demographic of "people driving through the midwest and making the foolish mistake of stopping."
