Entertainment predictions for 2023 and a trip to Hollywood with our host
Streamed & Screened host Bruce Miller is jetting off to Hollywood next week for a fancy Television Critics Association get together, so we thought we'd hear some of his favorite memories from the dozens and dozens of La La Land trips he's taken going all the way back in 1980. We'll also get to hear some of his entertainment industry predictions for the coming year, as well as some sage advice on can't-miss Hollywood destinations. And, as we mention in the episode, the whole 'prediction' prompt here is lovingly lifted from The Ethical Life podcast where Streamed & Screened's own Chris Lay has joined Scott Rada and Rick Kyte two years running to prognosticate: 'Nine bold predictions for 2022' - The Ethical Life 'How well did our predictions for 2022 hold up?' - The Ethical Life 'We boldly make nine predictions for 2023' - The Ethical Life  Recent articles by Bruce Miller: 'Will Trent' hints at time when Steven Bochco ruled police dramas 'Black Adam' doesn't capitalize on what The Rock could be cooking What they said: A look back at the interviews of 2022 Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt can't control the chaos of 'Babylon' Brendan Fraser shines in beached 'Whale' Sioux City Journal Editor Bruce Miller's Five Favorite Stories of 2022 'Banshees of Inisherin,' 'Tar' tell compelling tales Follow the show: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/streamed-screened/id1497387116 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/28W6TG5TZMsXwWARz6lEu4 Twitter: https://twitter.com/StreamdNScreend Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/streamedandscreened Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/StreamedAndScreened Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, an entertainment reporter for multiple decades who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal, Jared McNett, a reporter for the Sioux City Journal, and Chris Lay, the podcast operations manager for Lee Enterprises. Our favorite movies of 2022!
This past year was full of dramatic ups and downs for the world of movies. A handful of massive blockbusters that had been held back due to the pandemic finally made their debut, some surprising international breakthroughs did well in theaters and on streaming, and at least a few indie movies connected with mainstream audiences and racked up some big box office numbers. Long time entertainment reporter, and currently the editor at the Sioux City Journal, Bruce Miller, is joined by co-host Chris Lay and extra special guest Jared McNett, to wrap up their year-end collection of episodes with a conversation about the absolute very best films of the year. Catch up on their other year-end episodes here: Our favorite TV shows of 2022 Our most anticipated movies for 2023 You can also check out the latest Ethical Life podcast where Chris joins Scott Rada and Rick Kyte to revisit predictions they made last December, including one about the then-upcoming Oscars that has aged particularly poorly: 'Nine bold predictions for 2022' - The Ethical Life 'How well did our predictions for 2022 hold up?' - The Ethical Life Our list of the best films from 2022: 'RRR' (where to watch) 'Top Gun: Maverick' (where to watch) 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' (where to watch) 'TÁR' (where to watch) 'The Fabelmans' (where to watch) 'Nope' (where to watch) 'The Banshees of Inisherin' (where to watch) 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (where to watch) 'Elvis' (where to watch) 'The Northman' (where to watch) 'Decision to Leave' (where to watch) 'Triangle of Sadness' (where to watch) 'Jackass Forever' (where to watch) 'Women Talking' (where to watch) 'Pearl' (where to watch) 'Bones and All' (where to watch) 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' (where to watch) 'Ambulance' (where to watch) 'Honk for Jesus. Our most anticipated movies for 2023!
We're looking ahead to 2023 with this episode and corralling the movies we're most looking forward to that are just over the horizon. Some of them are still undated, but they're all at the very least in some degree of post-production at the very least (other than the notable addition of 'Roosevelt' which will make sense when you listen to the episode). Regardless, we covered a lot of ground and didn't even mention any of the upcoming franchise installments on the way for 'John Wick,' 'Creed,' 'Mission Impossible,' 'Fast & Furious,' 'Dune,' or the Marvel or DC Cinematic Universe that maybe go without saying they deserve a spot here. And if you're looking for even more audio content to binge on by way of your ear-buds, you should check out the latest Ethical Life podcast where Streamed & Screened co-host and producer Chris Lay joins Scott Rada and Rick Kyte to revisit predictions they made last December, including one about the then-upcoming Oscars that has aged particularly poorly: 'Nine bold predictions for 2022' (Dec. 21, 2021) 'How well did our predictions for 2022 hold up?' Director Ron Howard discusses 'Thirteen Lives' and his new memoir 'The Boys'
When it comes to Hollywood careers, Ron Howard is in a class all by himself. Beloved as Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s and Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days" in the 1970s, he made his directing debut as a under the watchful eye of trash-cinema luminary Roger Corman with his films going on to cumulatively rack up nine Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director for "A Beautiful Mind." Our very own Bruce Miller had the chance to talk to him as he's making the "For Your Consideration" rounds for his movie "Thirteen Lives," a dramatization of the Tham Luang cave rescue, as well as promoting his new book, "The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family" which he co-authored with his brother, Clint. Also on the show we talk about new releases "Spoiler Alert" (adapted from a memoir where terminal cancer is the tragic twist) and "Violent Night" (a sort of "Home Alone" meets "John Wick"), both of which we think are very good but certainly might not make for the best double feature. Where to watch: Thirteen Lives (Prime Video) Spoiler Alert (Official Website) Violent Night (Official Website) Recent articles by Bruce Miller: 'Amsterdam' isn't the memorable mystery some thought 'George & Tammy' offers a surface look at country legends 'The Fabelmans' is one of the year's best pictures 'The Menu' serves up plenty of attitude -- and deadly surprises Gossip aside, 'Don't Worry Darling' bears watching Kal Penn says Santa Claus may just be the one to bring us together 'She Said' meticulously details the Weinstein case 'Christmas Story Christmas' recalls the original's beats Billy Eichner's 'Bros' is almost as tame as a Hallmark film Follow the show: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/streamed-screened/id1497387116 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/28W6TG5TZMsXwWARz6lEu4 Twitter: https://twitter.com/StreamdNScreend Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/streamedandscreened Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/StreamedAndScreened Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, an entertainment reporter for multiple decades who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal, Jared McNett, a reporter for the Sioux City Journal, and Chris Lay, the podcast operations manager for Lee Enterprises. Bonus: The end of 'Atlanta'
For this bonus episode we've got Jared McNett back onboard to spend some time digesting the series finale of 'Atlanta.' Created by Donald Glover and premiering on FX in 2016, just a month before his song 'Redbone' hit the charts, 'Atlanta' started off as a show about a struggling rapper and their rise-and-grind manager. The episodes and seasons that followed stretched, distorted and occasionally even outright neglected that basic premise, with Glover and his creative partners incorporating mocumentary formats, animation, commercial spoofs and other wild techniques. 'Atlanta' could be all over the place, but despite all that stylistic restlessness the show was always deeply grounded in some combination of social, emotional, political, or cultural sentiment (occasionally all at the same time). It's a show the likes of which (rich, weird, funny and deeply rewarding) are unlikely to happen again anytime soon. You can stream all four seasons of 'Atlanta' on HULU. 'Yellowstone' stars Luke Grimes & Kelsey Asbille talk season 5, plus 'Black Panther' predictions
This week we have an interview with "Yellowstone" actors Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille, who play Kayce and Monica Dutton respectively, and Bruce Miller gets some great insights from them about the future of their characters and the rest of the Dutton family. "Yellowstone" season 5 premieres Sunday Nov. 13 on the Paramount Network. We also dig out claws into some questions about Marvel's new "Black Panther" film, "Wakanda Forever," specifically whether or not we think it could repeat the box office success of its predecessor (which pulled in a cumulative $1.348 billion) and challenge "Top Gun: Maverick" for its top spot the list of movie money-makers for 2022. And, finally, if the phrase "elves vomiting glitter" does anything for you, then the upcoming Disney+ series, "The Santa Clauses," might be a pleasant addition under your streaming TV tree this year. What makes a good documentary film? Plus an interview with 'Good Night Oppy' filmmaker Ryan White
This week we're highlighting an interview Bruce Miller did with Ryan White, the director of Good Night Oppy. The film, which documents NASA's Mars rover Opportunity, is in theaters now and will land on Amazon Prime on November 23rd. It's an unexpectedly moving movie that Bruce has short-listed for his Oscar pool, and we thought we'd take the opportunity to hash out some of the other great documentaries this year, what it is that makes a great non-fiction film or series, and since Bruce also recently had a chat with the 'Documentary Now!' creators we give some shine to that consistently brilliant satirical deconstruction of the genre. Unpacking Netflix's creepy 'Cabinet of Curiosities' collection
Because it's the season for scary things, we can't get enough horror films in our lives. Thankfully, Netflix is here for us all with 'Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities.' An anthology series in the same vein as 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' they've been dropping two "episodes" a day since Tuesday. I say "episodes" because they're basically creepy cinematic novellas, each one helmed by a modern horror legend and featuring a cast-list loaded top to bottom with great actors. As with every collection of stuff like this, it's an eclectic grab-bag but we're here to run through the episodes in a spoiler-free fashion and pick out the best of the bunch. Disagree? Agree? This weekend will see the premiere of the second season of "The White Lotus," the most-awarded series at the Primetime Emmys earlier this year (nabbing ten statues for HBO), and Bruce Miller can't wait to talk about it. Also we've got an interview with Tony Hale about the brand new season of "The Mysterious Benedict Society" which premieres this week on Disney+. Best known as Buster Bluth ("Arrested Development"), Gary Walsh ("Veep") and Forky ("Toy Story 4"), he gets into what it's like to play both of the twin brothers Nicholas and Nathaniel Benedict. 'Halloween' horror tropes we hate and scary movies that subvert expectations
There's a new Halloween sequel out, Halloween Kills, that wraps up the trilogy of Michael Myers movies directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and we figured we'd use that as the launching pad to talk about all the scary Halloween horror tropes that irk us to no end and recommend some examples of the genre, both new and old, that subvert expectations. Our 2022 Best Picture nomination best guesses!
Despite the admittedly bad press surrounding Amsterdam, its release marks something of a beginning to the Hollywood Awards Season that will run from now until the end of the year. Studios will be dropping the bulk of their prestige films in the coming months, so we thought it was a great time to start a list of films we think are in the running to be nominated for the top Oscar category. The vast majority of these movies haven't come out yet, but between film festival buzz, trailers, and general vibes we think this is about a good a short list as we can come up with, all things considered. Did we leave anything out? Think our picks are way off? Let us know at our contact info below! Counting down the 10 greatest weather movies of all time with Across the Sky
One last fill-in episode before we're back with new episodes, but this is a good one. Our very own Bruce Miller was a guest on Across the Sky, a weather-centric podcast hosted by Lee Enterprises meteorologists, counting down the 10 greatest weather movies of all time. Here's the description from their side of the dial: "Grab a bucket of popcorn and get comfortable. If you like weather and movies, you have to listen to this! Weather plays a role in lots of films, but in some it has a starring role. With the help of Bruce Miller, from Lee Enterprises' TV, streaming and movie podcast Streamed & Screened, the Lee Weather Team takes a look at the best weather movies ever made. Listen along as the gang counts down the movies from ten to one. What makes these films stand out? Do they accurately portray the lives of meteorologists? Do they get the science right? Or are they just too much fun to leave out?! Find out if your favorite weather movie made the cut and which film the team crowned number one on this week's episode of Across the Sky." More on Across the Sky Matt Holiner of Lee Enterprises' Midwest group in Chicago, Kirsten Lang of the Tulsa World in Oklahoma, Joe Martucci of the Press of Atlantic City, N.J., and Sean Sublette of the Richmond Times-Dispatch in Virginia host a fast-paced weekly podcast that tackles hot (and cold!) topics plus what’s trending in meteorology, science and climate. The show isn't limited to hard science as our hosts and guests tug at your emotions from stories out in the elements.
