Juneteenth Holiday- Gesture or Turning Point
In this episode of “Just a Cup of Coffee” the guys (Fred Griffin, Rev. Dr. Kendrick E. Curry and Galen Kimbrue) have a defining conversation regarding the Juneteenth national holiday. Why did the Biden administration push so hard to get this through now? After all, it has been 156 years since it was issued in Texas on June 19, 1865. There is so many other important pending legislations that were a higher priority to African Americans.  The Voting Rights Act, The George Floyd Policing Act, The Emmitt Till Anti- Lynching Bill, Reparations, Voter Suppression etc. There has been a proverbial leapfrog over these issues, and it feels like African Americans have been “thrown a bone” or an “olive branch” to soften the blow after the 2020 Summer of murder and martyrs in the African American community by a racist system of policing. Is this the result of the horrific death of George Floyd? Is this born out of white fear or white guilt? It may be both!  How can white Americans observe and celebrate the end of slavery, but have a growing discomfort and demonization in many states not to teach the 1619 Project or Critical Race Theory by banning it in many states? How sincere are they about Juneteenth? How sincere are U.S. corporations about Juneteenth when there is little or no advancement of African Americans on Corporate Boards or Senior leadership? Is this just another corporate money grab to sell more products and drive new revenues in the name of Juneteenth? Time will surely tell, but for right now we need to view this with our “third eye”. Can America really heal, and somehow live up to its promise by running from these historical truths? The guys take a deep dive into these questions, and many more with the most compelling conversation anyone has discussed in a long time. We believe that you will find this conversation fascinating on so many levels. There is a lot to unpack in this episode of Just a Cup of Coffee, and there is an opportunity to gain a different perspective of these challenging historical events. This is another great episode that will leave you saying, “now that is hot”.
