CHRIS CANTERBURY interview - Nashville Country Artist - Quaalude Lullabies
Jim interviews Nashville Country Artist Chris Canterbury to talk about his newest album "Quaalude Lullabies", the songwriting process, touring, what he does besides music and more! Chris writes from the heart and while some of his songs are not entirely auto-biographical they will pull you in with their honesty.  There's not a bad song on the album and you really need to listen to Chris' music.  He needs to be heard. ABOUT CHRIS CANTERBURY'S new album "When I sat down to write this project, I tried to present each topic as a straight-forward Saturday morning kitchen conversation. That’s how I approach songwriting and it’s worked for me for a long time” says Chris Canterbury, a Louisiana native singer-songwriter, now based in Nashville. The project Canterbury is talking about is Quaalude Lullabies, a nine track collection of mostly sad songs that offers on-the-nose lyrical phrasing, subtlety loose production, and an honest insight into razor-edge topics like addiction, depression, and loneliness. In what started as a thought experiment, Quaalude Lullabies was self-produced by Canterbury, his first opportunity to be on both sides of the control room window. “I wanted to woodshop a record together that felt like Nebraska,” says Canterbury. “I wanted it to be loose like a box of bedroom demo tapes, but cohesive enough to stand on its own. I feel like we ended up with a solid album.” ************* KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     Be sure to subscribe on apple music / follow on spotify and also you can find us on Instagram (know_good_music) and YouTube (Know Good Music)   Also check out our YouTube channel for portions of video from our interviews.   Thank you for listening! - Jim

BILL SUMMERS interview - Herbie Hancock / The Headhunters
Mike and I had a great time talking to Bill Summers (who was in Herbie Hancock's band The Headhunters)!  We talk about various drums, his first meeting with Herbie Hancock, and the famous sound Bill created for one of the best known Jazz songs ever ... called Watermelon Man... Bill even demonstrates for us how the sound was created. About Bill: During the 1990s, Summers played with Los Hombres Calientes along with co-leader of the group, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and Jason Marsalis.  However, Summers has a much longer musical career, often working behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He also played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and is mentioned in passing by the liner notes of The Headhunters' 2003 release Evolution Revolution as contributing to that recording.   Check out the Headhunters newest album (sections of 4 of the new songs can be heard on our podcast) THE HEADHUNTERS - Speakers in the House released in November 2022: Speakers In The House is the legendary jazz-funk ensemble's first new album in 11 years. Co-lead by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark with support from NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, The Headhunters latest studio effort arrives just in time to celebrate this American music institution's 50th anniversary in 2023, having formed around Herbie Hancock's classic recording, Head Hunters, in 1973. An eight-track set available on Ropeadope Records, highlights from Speakers In The House include the New Orleans' second-line grooves of "Rocking At The Mole House," the world music-influenced jazz-fusion of "Kongo Square" and a modern post-bop re-imagination of the classic Headhunters' composition "Actual Proof," first released on their 1974 album, Thrust. INTERVIEW with ROBERT WALTER - Soul Jazz Keyboardist - The Greyboy Allstars - Roger Waters Tour
Mike and I had a great time talking to Soul Jazz Keyboardist Robert Walter about his high school band Daddy Long Legs, his current band: The Greyboy Allstars and what it's like being on tour with Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.     Robert is heading back on tour in March 2023 with Roger's band for the European leg of the tour. About Robert: A founding member of the seminal groove band The Greyboy Allstars, organ, keyboard and synth sharp-shooter Robert Walter splits his time between his own 20th Congress, The Greyboy Allstars, and a robust film soundtrack career in Los Angeles.   Initially formed as the backing band for rare groove luminary DJ Greyboy, The Greyboy Allstars became a longterm project for Walter with a string of critically acclaimed albums, world tours. The band quickly became home to some of the most revered players on the modern music scene.   The Greyboy Allstars' success also served as a platform for the band's individual members to launch highly successful and substantially diverse solo careers. To flex his desire to compose in a way that was just outside of Greyboy's wheelhouse, Walter formed 20th Congress and recorded and toured heavily through the late '90s and '00s.    The band featured a rotating crew of brilliant improvisers and genre-bending virtuosos over the years including Stanton Moore, Joe Russo, Will Bernard, and Cochemea Gastelum, Simon Lott, Victor Little, Chris Alford, Scott Metzger, Andy Hess, and John Kimock,   A brilliant improviser with a gift for riveting hooks and unstoppable grooves, Walter set out to create songs that blur the line between the composed and the spontaneous; an album with a narrative arc that isn’t tethered to concrete ideas. He uses a full arsenal of keyboards, synths and electronics and draws together the varied aspects of his career, from his film soundtrack work with Michael Andrews to his free-ranging improvisational excursions with the likes of genre jugglers like Marco Benevento, Skerik and Mike Gordon. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see 3 short video segments from our interviews.  Just search "know good music".
