This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis Theodoropoulos is joined by New Jersey Policy Perspective’s Senior Policy Analyst, Sheila Reynertson, and New Jersey Policy Perspective’s Director of Communications, Louis Di Paolo, to discuss Gov Phil Murphy's second budget. It is May and we are a few months into NJ's budget season. With  Sheila, Louis and Stathis, we break down what the budget does and doesn’t do for the state, and what it means for our state's fiscal health and for education, transit, and other important priorities.

This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis Theodoropoulos is joined by New Jersey Policy Perspective’s Director of Government and Public Affairs, Brandon McKoy, to talk about one of the most consequential and important pieces of legislation NJ is working on, the $15 Minimum Wage.  With the $15 Minimum Wage’s policy goal of lifting the pay for low wage workers and cutting poverty, Brandon McKoy breaks down the discussion for us. We start by diving into who the workers that would be most benefit from this policy, then leading us into the pros and cons of the legislation initially introduced in New Jersey’s Legislature at the tail end of 2018. Brandon talks about what the legislation needs to become in order to bring the most benefit to NJ, how we can use this an an opportunity to create innovative policies to support small businesses, and ultimately what the benefit would be for the Jersey’s workforce and Jersey’s financial well being if the state passes a clean $15 Minimum Wage Bill.

This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis Theodoropoulos chats with Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker on how New Jersey will usher in a new era for science, innovation, and technology.  Assemblyman Zwicker who represents the 16th legislative district in NJ, Chair of the newly created Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, and Head of Science Education at the Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory, talks about this new vision on an innovation economy we are building towards.  We start the conversation on where his committee is starting their work and what he hopes his committee can do to lay down the foundation for this new era. We then chat bout what problems New Jersey faces and how investment in innovation can solve those issues.  Later on in the show we talk about we can create a diverse pool of scientists that is as diverse as our state, and how can  make sure research that is created helps address economic and social justice issues in our communities.  We finish the conversation on what the state of science is in the US and what issues we need to address urgently.     

This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis, Kavita, Brian, and Ronald dive into what is happening in New Jersey this week. Gov. Phil Murphy just signed into law a bill that allows for automatic voting registration. We break down how this works and what this would mean for communities across the state. We later discuss the lawsuit against the Trump Administration against the question of asking about citizenship on the upcoming 2020 Census. We talk about why states are suing and what would a question like this would mean for Federal funding and representation if the question were to stay. Finally, we talk about how NJ will allow DREAMERS to get financial aid for their higher education. We breakdown how DREAMERS are intertwined with our success of our state, and how giving them the opportunity to fund their higher education is a win win.
