A very special interview with 5x Grammy Nominee percussionist/educator John Santos. We discuss John's latest projects and current music events. He is known for his innovative use of traditional forms and instruments in combination with contemporary music, and has earned worldwide respect and recognition as a prolific performer, composer, educator, writer, radio programmer, and record/event producer whose career has spanned over 35 years. John has worked with multi-generational masters such as Cachao, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Max Roach, Eddie Palmieri, Bobby Hutcherson, Chucho Valdes, John Handy, Zakir Hussain, McCoy Tyner, Poncho Sanchez, Omar Sosa, Carlos Santana just to name a few And of course has led numerous ensembles including the Machete Ensemble and currently the John Santos Sextet, which is receiving much acclaim on their recent recordings and performances. On his weekly syndicated radio program, the Reverend Jesse Jackson hosted a lively roundtable discussion on NARAS’ elimination of traditional minority music Grammys. Included were Latin Jazz bandleader Bobby Sanabria and attorney Roger Maldondo, along with San Francisco singer and past NARAS Governor Sandy Cressman, author Danny Schechter, and Jonathan Jackson, National Spokesman of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.
