Episode 071 – Update on the Latest News
Hey Everyone! Just wanted to give everyone an update on what's been happening with Chris and I.  As you all know, Chris and I have both traveled a lot during the summer months.  But we have been working while we were gone. As we approached our one year anniversary of doing the podcast together, we realized that we had answered over 250 questions on the show!  We felt that that was quite an accomplishment.  We've both enjoyed answering everyones questions, but we both also agreed that we'd like to try something a little different. One of the objectives of the Q and A podcast was that through your questions, Chris and I would always be learning new things in internet business.  Once you answer over 250 questions on internet business, the questions we receive tend to become repetitive.  We didn't feel like that was a great fit for what we wanted to achieve or what the audience would want to hear. So, we started brainstorming things that we could do that would achieve our goal of continuing our internet business education while still providing you, the audience with the knowledge you would need to assist with your own internet businesses.  Finally, we came up with the idea to do a internet business news style show that would cover the latest happenings in internet business each week.  This would allow us to be continually learning new things and we would be providing you we the latest information to help your internet businesses grow. So, thus was born This Week in Internet Business, a brand new podcast centered around the latest happenings in Internet Business, along with our thoughts and analysis on the matter.  After some discussion, we decided that we would launch the podcast as a completely separate feed and website, as we feel that the information that we have provided with the Q & A's would still be beneficial and we didn't want to replace it.  We will also continue with the weekly interviews under the Internet Business Questions brand. As some of you who podcast may be aware, iTunes prefers that you have at least three podcast episodes done before submitting to iTunes.  We wanted to keep things current, so we decided that the first two episodes would sort of be recap episodes of interesting internet business and internet in general type topics from the first and second quarter of this year.  It also has given us a chance to work to get in a rhythm and play with the format a little.  Starting with episode #3, you will find what a typi

Episode 68 – Content Guidelines; Anchor Text; SEO Lawsuits; Membership Sites and Contests
The questions for this episode include: You guys talk a lot about making good content.  Can you give me a few simple takeaways for a great blog post that I can refer back to over and over again? What should I do about anchor text? I was thinking of getting into doing a little SEO work for small businesses.  Are there any liability issues with using grey hat or black hat methods with my clients? How do I build a membership site on WordPress? I recently did a give a way on my blog.  Should I just send a generic thank you for entering email to those that didn't win, or something a little better? Want to help us out, ask us a question or just say hello?  Visit http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and send us a tweet!  We do our best to reply to each one The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Download Organizer for Mac This is an app from the Mac App store.  It allows you to set up different filters and rules for downloads on a Mac.  The example they give is that you can set it up so that everything you download from Gmail goes in an email folder, or a certain type of file type goes in a certain folder. It runs $4.99 in the Mac App store, so if you download a lot of files, it definitely looks to be worth a try. Episode 67 – Social Sharing; Tumblr; New Business Marketing; Backlinks and Idea Validation
The questions for this episode include: I know I need to be more active on social media to build my brand, but I'm having a difficult time finding things to share.  I see other people that seem to have non-stop content.  Is their some secret to this that I'm missing? Should I be using Tumblr for my online business? I am launching a new business that has both online and offline elements.  I'm new to the world of online business.  The only thing I've done is a one page website and I've setup a Facebook page and a twitter account.  How should I start marketing it?  I know you guys have talked a lot about back links in the past, but I know it changes a lot too.  Can you go over some fundamentals that I should know that won't change anytime soon? I have an idea for something I'd like to try in my business, but I'm having a hard time figuring out if it would work.  Do you guys have any process you go through when deciding to go with a new idea or not? Want to help us out, ask us a question or just say hello?  Visit http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and send us a tweet!  We do our best to reply to each one The Curtis-hanger for the episode: BetterSnap Tool for Mac One thing I do like in Windows is the ability to snap a window to a certain part of a screen.  I had found a free mac app that would do it with OSX Mountain Lion, but it became very buggy with Mavericks. So, I went searching again and found an app in the Mac App Store called BetterSnapTool.  Once you install it and open the app, then you can drag any window to the corner of a screen and it will snap that window to the corner and have it take up approximately 1/4 of the screen.  If you drag it to the side and snap it, it will take up half the screen, and if you snap it to the top, it will go full screen. If you do a lot of multitasking, this is incredibly handy.  You can also configure it to start whenever you start your mac. It currently costs $1.99 in the mac app store, has over 2000 ratings and it is nearly 5 stars.  So if you are a mutli tasker, definitely check it out. Episode 66 – Google Authorship; Page Rank; Anti-Spam Laws; Problem Backlinks? & Online Reviews
The questions for this episode include: What happened with Google Authorship?  I don't see my profile picture in search results for my articles anymore? If a page was ranking well for significant keywords and then stopped, what would be the reason for it? I saw something on the news about a new Anti-spam law in Canada.  Some of my customers and email list subscribers are from Canada.  Do I need to be concerned about this? Backlinks are coming from porn sites according to aherfs but not in webmaster tools or majestic or semrush, what to do? Are online reviews important for products I have for sale? Episode 065 – Slideshare; 404 Errors; Apple & Bing; Short Articles & Better Blogging;
The questions for this episode include: I heard you mention slideshare last week.  I've never used this before.  Is it something I should look into to promote my site? Hi Guys, Does 404 Error have any Serious Impact on SEO? Any Consequences that will affect page rank? Recently I used Moz Crawl Diagnostic and found that there's more than 60 404 error pages in my Client's Site. What do you guys think? Feel free to comment and share. Thanks. I saw in the recent Apple announcements that in the next version of OSX, they were going to integrate Bing into spotlight and present some web results within spotlight.  How do you think this will affect SEO strategies? I write a lot of 100 word post to describe the different hairstyles on my website. I'm not gaining any traction with SEO THOUGH. Do I need to increase my word count or is this the best I can get from these pages. I've been blogging for a few months, but I'm still really new to it.  Do you have any tips to help my blog posts be the best they can be? Want to help us out, ask us a question or just say hello?  Visit http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and send us a tweet!  We do our best to reply to each one The Curtis-hanger for the episode: 10 of the Best Productivity Tips You see these top 10 or 20 or whatever productivity posts all the time.  Yet I'm a sucker for them and I still read them.  Most of the time, I'm highly disappointed about the cliche advice.  This article was a little different and I'd like to share a few of the points. The #10 lesson would actually be my number 1.  It is to work on your highest leverage tasks.  Identify the things that are most important and work on them first and the most.  The others will fall in line or fall by the wayside, but you'll still have gotten the most important things done. The #8 lesson was one that I really really liked.  It was to always question blanket productivity advice.  How many times have you heard the advice that you need to get up at 5am or 5:30 to be the most productive?  I've tried it several times and for several weeks or a month at a time.  My results, I'm sleepy by 3 in the afternoon and I'm in a semi comatose state for the rest of the day.  If I get up at 6:15, I can be functional until 11pm, no problem.  So remember, just because someone says it, that doesn't make it true for you. One last one I'll share is the #5 lesson.  That was that there is no single productivity secret, but there are hundreds of tact

Episode 064 – Repurpose Content; Strip EXIF Info; Keeping Traffic; Improve Writing Speed & Disavow Directory Links?
The questions for this episode include: Can you give me some ideas as to how to repurpose some of my content? How do I take out the Exif information from an image? I'm starting to get some traffic to my site.  How do I keep them there? Can you give me some tips on how to improve my writing speed?  It just takes me very long to write an article, I'd like to be able to do this in less time. Hi Everyone, Just hoping to settle something, I'm conducting a link analysis and I'm seeing 60% of the new links to the site over the last month are from an open directory (that searches everything and anything it seems). These links are from 20-30 different domain all searching on the same keywords, but they are all clearly a clone of the original directory with the same design and similar URL structure. I want to disavow each of these domains but the owner has had counter advice saying these links won't be counted anyway. Is it better to be safe than sorry and disavow these domains anyway? Want to help us out, ask us a question or just say hello?  Visit http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and send us a tweet!  We do our best to reply to each one The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Air Mail Airmail is sold in the Mac App Store for $1.99, so it won't break the bank.  IT supports Gmail, Google Apps, iCloud, Exchange, IMAP and Pop3.  It has a unified inbox. It supports gmail keyboard shortcuts, labels and tags and comes with multiple themes and layout options.  Search works great on it and it even has built in integration with Calendar, 2Do, Things Reminders, OmniFocus and Evernote.  It also has attachment support for integration with DropBox and Google Drive. You can customize the notifications and it supports Markdown, rich text, html and plain text. So for $2, it's definitely worth a try if you are a mac user that uses multiple email accounts. Episode 063 – Social Media Tools; Powerful Backlinks; Panda 4; Repurposing Content & iFrames
Want to help us out, ask us a question or just say hello?  Visit http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and send us a tweet!  We do our best to reply to each one The questions for this episode include: I'm having difficulty keeping up with all of my social media work for my site.  What tools are best to help me with this? Hi guys, what is the best way to build 3 powerful backlinks within a week? Last week you guys talked about Penguin 3.0, but now I'm hearing about Panda 4.0? Question regarding repurposing an old blog article.  Let's say I have a blog article we wrote from 2012 that we want to refresh.  Would it be best to edit the original article and publish with todays date, or copy the original article, refresh it and publish new.  Seems like we would have duplicate content in the 2nd scenario. What's the deal with iframes? I hear people say they're bad but we embed YouTube vids all the time.  Is that bad for SEO too?   The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Todoist So for about 6 to 8 months, my regular business has been using Trello for our company task management software.  However, I kept running into one significant problem.  We live and work in a somewhat rural area and cell phone signal can be really poor in some places.  When you completely lose your cell signal, Trello becomes pretty useless too. So once again, I started my quest to find the perfect task management system.  I was revisiting some of the older ones I had tried and came back to Todoist. Todoist finally added a few features that have made it really useful to work for groups.  With a free account, you can make an unlimited number of tasks or projects.  You can share projects with other people.  You can assign projects to people too.  You can assign due dates and times.  It is also available on every major platform, iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Web Browser, etc. It is free to use on any of those platforms.  For $30 a year, you can jump to premium account.  This adds the ability to add labels, to add notes within todos, more filtering and you can have reminders be texted to you through SMS along with a few other features. So if you're still looking for a task management solution, it is definitely worth a look.
