The Need for Translations with Jill Kushner Bishop of Multilingual Connections
Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are back with special guest Jill Kushner Bishop, the CEO of Multilingual Connections. Kicking off the episode, Brian and Producer Brian talk about some upcoming events in the market research community, including SampleCon, the UGA MMR conference, as well as the upcoming Cincinnati Scurry they are both participating in to benefit mental health. Then we jump right into the interview with Jill. It started off with Jill discussing her background as a linguistic anthropologist, and how she ended up in market research instead of being a high school Spanish teacher. Jill then gets into how she started Multilingual Connections, and how being a language consultant for Chipotle after 9/11 led her to start her own company. Jill also talks about the path and the evolution the company has taken over the years.  Next, Brian and Jill discuss how language plays into market research, starting from a US perspective, then to a global perspective. The discussion also hits on why native language is so important in research. After that, Jill talks about some of the trends she is seeing within market research and language. In the second part of our interview, we have Jill answer the four P’s. Jill turns one P around on us and lets us know that instead of a hidden talent in the kitchen, she admits she is not a good cook. She also lets us know that she started fostering puppies during the pandemic, her favorite indulgence, as well as what she likes to do in her downtime. This is a super interesting interview that you don’t want to miss! The Spring Conference Recap Extravaganza
Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, we recap all three spring conferences that happened back to back to back in April. To help provide the recap on the conferences, Brian Lamar is joined by Andrew DeCilles and Tony Brown. (Associate Producer Emma also makes an appearance as Producer Brian was at graduation) The episode kicks off with Tony and Andrew briefly talking about the recent reorganization of the sales team that happened. As part of this, they both shared their new sales team names. Then Brian Lamar and the guys jump right into the conference recap. Brian kicks it off with a quick recap of the Insights Association Annual Conference that was in Philadelphia. Andrew is next with a recap of the goings-on from Quirks Chicago. He talks about the energy that he felt, some of the items he noticed, the quality of the content, and the food. Tony and Brian then tag team the recap for IIeX that was in Austin. They both comment on how they noticed people seemed excited to be there in person, as well as the diversity of the crowd. They both mentioned how the crowd seems to have changed over the last 5+ years and that they both liked it. In the second half of the episode, the guys discuss some of the trends they noticed at individual conferences or ones that seemed to span across multiple. These included diversity, navigating COVID, growth of innovation and funding in our industry, data quality, and much more! If you missed any of the conferences in April, you don’t want to miss this episode! Thanks for listening! Missed our webinar, The Sample Landscape 2022: The Trends Impacting Online Sample? It’s Good to Be Back
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have been gone a few weeks, but are happy to be back with a jam-packed news episode this week. Kicking it off, Producer Brian and Brian Lamar discuss a bit of personal news for Brian as he was promoted to Chief Insights Officer. Loyal listeners may know that he called himself that around April Fool’s, but now it is a reality! Then the guys jump into some market research news. First, they discuss the news about Meta (formerly Facebook) and an upcoming class-action lawsuit about how they inflated their audience measurements, as well as a lawsuit out of Illinois about how they are keeping photos of people who do not have Facebook profiles. The guys talk about the implications, both to market research and overall. Next, Brian and Brian touch on the announced merger of NPD and IRI. They discuss whether a rebrand is coming, or if there is enough brand equity in one of the current names that they keep it.  The next story leads to a broader discussion. It starts with the story about a new report from DISQO that found 38% of consumers incorrectly recall their digital shopping journey behavior. Brian Lamar had sent some notes from a presentation he attended at IIeX from Michael Lancor at P&G about their InTech sensor that measures what consumers do and they compare with what they say they do. Brian Lamar and Producer Brian talk about the impact this could have on the future of market research, as well as some of the potential causes or biases that are leading to this disconnect. In the last few stories, the guys touch on the latest earnings report from Ipsos, Press Ganey completing their Forsta acquisition, Kristen Luck being added to Rival Technologies Board, and Geraldine Proust being named as ESOMAR’s new head of professional standard. We know it has been a long layoff between episodes, hopefully, you enjoy this one! Thanks for listening! April MRX Conference Preview
Welcome back to another episode of Intellicast! In today’s episode, we’re joined by Jason Inderhees to discuss the latest market research news and give a preview of the upcoming MRX conferences in April. The guys start off by discussing Nielsen’s rejection of a $15B unsolicited bid from a private equity consortium which leads to a quick chat about how far the market research industry has come in order to be turning down offers of that size. They also take a look at Escalent’s acquisition of Mercator Advisory Group and PureProfile’s integration of Sample Ninja’s panel management solution. To wrap up the news segment, the guys take a deep dive into the Insights Association’s year-long internship, The IDEAtor Fellowship Program, which aims to encourage greater diversity in the industry much like the MAPP program that EMI is involved with here locally. In the next segment, the guys launch into some conference previews. EPC: Do We Need To Change How We Price?
Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, we continue our conversation around earning-per-click. This time we are joined by Andrew DeCilles and Vignesh Krishnan, CEO and Founder of Research Defender, to tackle earnings-per-click from a new angle. The episode kicks off with Vignesh giving an analogy of EPC to airlines selling the last remaining seat at $1.00. This analogy kicks off a great conversation of EPC and current pricing models, and other pricing models. Vignesh then brings another great point into play talking about how Google and ad tech (where EPC is coming from) are a probabilistic world where everything will balance out due to sheer numbers and volume, where sample is a deterministic world. This thought leads to a conversation around the current pricing of sample, and if a new pricing model is needed to better bridge the EPC side with the client budgets. We get pretty into the weeds on this one, but if you like the discussion from the past two episodes, you don’t want to miss this one! Thanks for listening! If you want to learn more about Research Defender, visit their website at: https://researchdefender.com/ If can connect with Vignesh on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vignesh-krishnan-08846aa/ Brian Lamar will be heading to Philadelphia for the Insights Association Annual Conference from April 4-6. Shopper Insights and Trends with Chris Whitaker of Explorer Research
Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, we are joined by Chris Whitaker, Partner at Explorer Research. Chris joins us to talk about some of the changes that have been going on within shopper insights due to the pandemic, as well as some shopper/consumer trends they are seeing. We also get into what trends may be temporary and what are more permanent changes in consumer behavior. Kicking off the episode, Chris tells us about his background and what led him to start Explorer Research with his other 2 business partners. He also gets into some details on Explorer Research itself, and the kinds of research they specialize in, including shopper labs, in-person observations/interviews, planogram optimizations, and much more! Brian and Chris then get into how Chris and his team had to pivot when COVID hit, and the actions they have taken since then to get back up and running again.  This topic leads to a discussion on consumer behavior, and the changes Chris and his team have observed over the last couple of years. Chris then tells us about several trends they have observed, including the increase in online shopping for day-to-day goods, shopping trips becoming shorter (and less browsing/impulse buying), more “Click-and-Collect” (or curbside pick-up), and the rise of new payment options.  As Chris discusses some of the trends, it leads to a deep dive into how permanent these trends are, and if this is causing changes to what his clients are looking for when they are gathering insights. We also touch on environmental changes, and a couple of other topics as well. In the last segment of our interview, we switch gears and get to know Chris a bit better with a new round of the 4 P’s. We learn Chris loves pickleball, exercise, and got a new puppy during the pandemic.  If you want to learn more about Explorer Research, their solutions, and their shopper insights, visit their website: https://explorerresearch.com/ You can also connect with Chris on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-whitaker-1098a6a/ If you are heading to Austin for IIeX on April 19-20, be sure to check out the session “What Do Brands Really Want from Your Marketing?” where Anne Stephenson of Explorer Research will be speaking. EPC: Part Deux
Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, we continue our conversation about Earnings Per Click or EPC as a measure of survey health. Joining Brian Lamar and Producer Brian is Andrew DeCilles, as well as special guest Katie Gross, the Chief Client Officer of Suzy. The conversation picks back up pretty quickly from the last episode. Andrew and Brian give a brief recap of what was covered, and Katie talks about why she reached out to continue the discussion. Katie has some unique insight into this area having worked for a panel, an exchange, an MR agency. and an end client throughout her career. She leans into that experience to give us the view of EPC from a panel management point of view rather than the sample purchaser view we had in the last episode.  Katie discusses how in the past if you needed to “slam sample” you called up the panel and they pushed invites out to their panelist, even if it damaged the panel. This leads to a conversation on how EPC can help protect the asset of a panel (the respondents) and actually plays into the respondent experience and survey design. We even get into how EPC doesn’t mean the end of low incidence studies, it can just mean that there is there may be a pricing change to how it is currently priced. Finally, we discuss how to best bridge the gap between the current model and any future model that leverages EPC as its core metric. This is a great episode on something that is a growing trend in the online sample world – you do not want to miss it! Thanks for tuning in! Be sure to catch part of our EPC discussion. EPC: The Good and the Bad
Welcome back to aonther episode of Intellicast! In this episode, Andrew DeCilles joins us to discuss EPC (Earnings Per Click) as a measure of survey health. They kick off the episode with a recent MRX news update: Zendesk has terminated their intent to acquire Survey Monkey for $4.1 million—the second time Zendesk has shut down an attempt to merge/acquire. In a serendipitous turn of events, Andrew joined us on the previous episode where we announced this acquisition! The guys then jump into a discussion around EPC. For those listening who don’t have an in-depth understanding of EPC and what it means, don’t worry. We cover what EPC means, what it does, what it might mean for the industry, and more. Brian Lamar, Producer Brian, and Andrew each give their own opinions on EPC from several different standpoints. If you’ve ever had questions about EPC, this is a can’t miss episode! Raising VC Capital With Lisa Wilding-Brown of InnovateMR
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a great guest joining us today – Lisa Wilding-Brown, CEO of InnovateMR. Lisa joins Brian Lamar and Producer Brian to talk about the recent venture capital funding InnovateMR received from CIVC Investments out of Chicago. Before we dove into those details, we talked to Lisa about how she was settling in as CEO. Brian mistakenly thinks it was over a year ago, and it cause a good laugh when Lisa told him it has only officially been since September of 2021. We then jump into a discussion around the new capital InnovateMR raised from CIVC Investments. Lisa talks about what the investment means to the organization. She then gets into the process behind getting the venture capital, which if you have not been through the process, is super interesting. We then get Lisa to talk about what some of the new money might be used for. She gives us a couple of hints like upgrading Pointclub.com and VisionSuite but keeps the rest of it close to the vest. We then switch gears and talk about a new industry study InnovateMR has launched called The State of DIY Research. This is an interesting study because they are asking for insights from users of DIY tools. If you are interested in providing your feedback on this topic, you take the survey here: https://visionsurveys.innovatemr.com/survey/582/The-State-of-DIY This was a great episode, and it was great to catch up with Lisa. In our last story of the day, the guys get into a lengthy discussion about the news that the Census Bureau has plans to create its own probability-based panel to conduct public opinion research from. This leads to a broader discussion on whether it is fair for the government to compete with the private sector, and if this is more of a warning shot to the industry to do better. Talking Data Quality with Cheskie Rosenzweig of CloudResearch
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have another great guest joining us on this episode. Cheskie Rosenzweig, the Senior Research and Product Scientist at CloudResearch joins Brian Lamar and Producer Brian to talk about data quality. The episode kicks off with Cheskie giving us some insight into his background and how he got into market research. Like many who have answered this question, Cheskie didn’t have a direct route into the market research industry. Cheskie then gives us a bit of detail about how he ended up at CloudResearch, as well as what CloudResearch does.  The conversation then turns to data quality. Cheskie talks about how and why he started to focus on data quality. He talks about how his curiosity after learning more about the panel industry and his background in psychology led him down the path to explore data quality. Cheskie then talks about how he thinks about data quality, which leads to him talking about CloudResearch’s data quality tool, Sentry. He then gives Brian an overview of the Sentry tool, which is a pre-survey qualification/vetting tool that routes high-quality and low-quality respondents. As Cheskie explains, it integrates some “nifty” behavioral questions as part of the vetting process. Cheskie also talks about how they have incorporated semantic-network questions into Sentry as well. In the last part of the interview, we switch gears and get to know Cheskie a bit better on a personal level with a new edition of the 4 P’s. We learn that Cheskie’s hidden talent is that he is a baker. What was probably the biggest surprise is that both he and Brian both watch marble racing. This is a great chat about data quality that you don’t want to miss. The guys then talk about the new proposed law in Washington DC called Stop Discrimination by Algorithms Act. Jason and Brian talk about how this is a logical next step, but also how it might be opening Pandora’s Box. Producer Brian raised the question about how this kind of law might impact some of the growing technologies in market research like machine learning and AI, and what it could mean. The guys then take on the rebrand of Prodege’s POD tool to Peeq. In the last news story, the guys talk about the new leadership team that was announced by Cint that combines senior leaders from both Lucid and Cint. The guys talk about the surprise of how even the number of senior leaders from both organizations there was in the announcement. In the second half of the episode, the guys talk about some 2022 predictions for the market research industry. They discuss the predictions that were talked about in a recent Greenbook blog series and give their own perspectives.  You can read the series here: Part 1 / Part 2 Thanks for listening! Talking Data Privacy Legislation with Howard Fienberg of the Insights Association
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a special guest joining Brian Lamar and Producer Brian this episode – Howard Fienberg of the Insights Association. If you don’t know who Howard is (you should), he is the market research industry’s lobbyist in Washington DC helping ensure that our industry’s perspective is taken into account with lawmakers. He joins the guys to talk about data privacy legislation and a few other topics.  Kicking off the episode, Howard gives Brian Lamar and Producer Brian some insights into what a lobbyist actually does, and what his day specifically is like.  They then get into a deep discussion around data privacy legislation, including CCPA, the upcoming CPRA, as well as other state-level data privacy laws that are being proposed or that are going into effect soon. As part of this discussion, Howard gives us the inside details on why a federal data privacy law is not likely to come any time soon. He also gives some advice to market research firms on what they should be doing to stay compliant with the various laws. (Keep in mind, Howard is not a lawyer and says so to kick off this interview) In the last 10 minutes of the interview, we switch gears a bit and talk about a recent article Howard published about the use of non-competes in the market research industry, specifically non-compensated ones. This was a great interview you do not want to miss! You can connect with Howard on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/howardfienberg/). Welcome to Season 5
Welcome back to Intellicast! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are back to kick off season 5. The guys kick off the episode talking about Ryan Smith’s recent purchase of the Major League Soccer Team in Salt Lake City, Real Salt Lake. Both guys discuss how it is a dream to be able to buy a sports team. Next, the guys jump into recent market research news. In the first story, the guys talk about Nielsen’s new deduplicated ad measurement platform called Nielsen One Alpha. The guys discuss how they think this is the future of ad measurement since people are using different screens to consume content, or even using multiple screens at once. Next, the guys discuss a new acquisition by Numerator. What was a pleasant surprise for the guys was that it was Numerator that made the acquisition, not Kantar. Next, Brian and Brian touch on the Cint/Lucid acquisition being finalized. They both talk about how quickly it closed. This naturally leads to some speculation on what Patrick Comer might be up to next. In the last news story of the day, the guys discuss the announcement from the US Census Bureau about its methodology to help reduce the impact of Covid-19 on the quality of its American Community Survey (ACS) five-year data, ahead of an expected March 2022 release date. In the last segment of the episode, Brian and Brian discuss a recent article published by INC. called, 3 Ways Market Research Makes You Dumber and What to Do Instead. They dig into the article and give their opinions on what the author states in the article. They both agree the article is clickbait and more of a description of a dysfunctional organization than an indictment of market research firms. You can read it here (https://www.inc.com/geoffrey-james/3-ways-market-research-makes-you-dumber-what-to-do-instead.html) Thanks for listening!
