Check out this week's episode of Insight Out with my guest Mark Schaefer!  One of my favorite episodes of Insight Out is my conversation with John Espirian. During that interview, he mentioned his mentor was a guy named Mark Schaefer.  Since I respect John so much, I decided to read Mark’s book Known, and invite him on the show. Fortunately for me (and you)…he said yes. This episode is our conversation. Mark is a globally-recognized blogger, speaker, and author of seven best-selling books:  ·        Social Media Explained ·        Return On Influence ·        Born to Blog ·        The Content Code ·        The Tao of Twitter  ·        KNOWN: The Handbook for Building and Unleashing Your Personal Brand in the Digital Age,  ·        Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins He is the co-host of The Marketing Companion, one of the top 10 marketing podcasts on Apple Podcasts. He is in the Top 10 of the most re-tweeted marketing authorities in the world and was listed as one of the Top 10 authorities on Social Selling by Forbes. How to Activate the Genius of Others - Liz Wiseman (encore episode)
Today’s guest is Liz Wiseman, author of New York Times bestseller Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, The Multiplier Effect: Tapping the Genius Inside Our Schools, Impact Players: How to Take the Lead, Play Bigger and Multiply Your Impact and Wall Street Journal bestseller Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work. Liz has conducted significant research in the field of leadership and collective intelligence and writes for Harvard Business Review, Fortune, and a variety of other business and leadership journals. A former executive at Oracle Corporation, over the course of 17 years, Liz was the Vice President of Oracle University and a global leader in Human Resource Development. Her management research and executive development firm The Wiseman Group is focused on developing leaders around the globe who can take on the world's toughest challenges. Her client list includes Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. As you will see in this show, I met Liz when she spoke at Tesla and it resulted in one of the most memorable and emotional professional experiences in my life. On the show, we dive into the concepts of Multipliers and Rookie Smarts and she tells personal insight stories that have helped make her the person she is today. She explains the interesting reason why she decided to leave Oracle, and how that planted the seed for one of her books. We discuss her insights as a mother of 4 and a busy professional, and how her world was changed when she realized the management skill she used at work is the exact same skillset she used at home. She also shares how and why she created labels in her books to help provide a framework and language to discuss what she calls the “undiscussable” - A multiplier is a genius maker and helps to activate everyone around them to be their best by spending their energy on extracting and extending the genius of others. A diminisher does the exact opposite, by restricting others and holding them back from showing their what she calls “native genius”. We will discuss this in detail, including giving an example of the “accidental diminisher” - someone who has positive intentions but inadvertently diminishes those around them. She also gives some sage advice for parents on how to balance life and family. I’m beyond thrilled to release today’s show and can thank Liz enough for being my guest so please enjoy this episode of Insight Out! Mike Bayer, or Coach Mike as he is commonly called is not your typical personal development coach. Far from it. With over 40 appearances on Dr. Phil, his New York Times best-selling book Best Self, and his just rebased book One Decision, Coach Mike brings emotion and authenticity you rarely see. Yes, authenticity is a buzzword these days, but Mike has made his life’s work to help people find their true self…or more precisely, their best-self. Bob Burg (author of The Go-Giver) - How to Master the Art of Ultimate Influence (Encore Episode)
In this episode, Billy sits down with Bob Burg, author of a wealth of successful books on sales, marketing, and influence. Of his books, he calls one the cornerstone of his life’s work: Adversaries into Allies: Master the Art of Ultimate Influence. They explore the themes he outlined in this insightful book, in addition to Bob’s primary framework: the Five Principles of Influence. If you’ve ever wanted to have more influence without resorting to manipulation, this conversation will guide you in the right direction.   Bob Burg shares how a subtle shift in focus is not only a more uplifting and fulfilling way of conducting business but the most financially profitable way, as well. For 30 years, he’s helped companies, sales leaders, and their teams communicate their value more effectively, sell at higher prices with less resistance, and grow their businesses based on Endless Referrals. Bob has regularly addressed audiences ranging in size from 50 to 16,000 — sharing the platform with notables including today’s top thought leaders, broadcast personalities, Olympic athletes, and political leaders, including a former United States President. Although he was best known for his book Endless Referrals for years, it’s his business parable, The Go-Giver (coauthored with John David Mann), that’s captured the imagination of his readers. The Go-Giver, a Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek Bestseller, makes up over a million of Bob’s 2 million total book sales. Since its release, it has consistently stayed in the Top 25 on Porchlight’s (formerly 800-CEO-READ) Business Book Bestsellers List. The book has been translated into 30 languages. It was rated #10 on Inc. Magazine’s list of the Most Motivational Books Ever Written and HubSpot’s 20 Most Highly-Rated Sales Books of All Time. Tune in to hear Billy talk with Bob, who’s been named one of the 30 Most Influential Leaders by The American Management Association, and named one of the Top 200 Most Influential Authors in the World by Richtopia. What we discussed with Bob: [01:53] – About Bob’s dad Mike Burg [02:53] – What ultimate influence means to Bob [04:25] – Who is a genuine influencer [07:16] – The life lesson he learned from his cat, Liberty [10:40] – Basic principle of human nature [13:12] – How he developed his ideas and thoughts [17:43] – The relationship between self-control and character of a person [19:23] – What can we do to control our emotions? [23:30] – Why are clashes of beliefs so critical to an influencer? [26:25] – Setting the proper frame to get desired results Valuable Insights by Bob: Influence is the ability to move a person to the desired action. Great influencers don’t try to push their ideas to others. Great influencers attract people. If we want people to take action to go towards the desired outcome, it has to align with what they want. Their values and their goals have to align. As human beings, one of the driving forces within us is freedom, making decisions for our lives. Only when you’re the boss of yourself, then you’re in the position to take a potentially negative situation and turn it into a win. Make sure that you’re the master of your emotions as opposed to your emotions being your master. Notable Quotes: [02:14] – “Tact is the language of strength.” [05:15] – “People do things for their reasons, not our reasons.” [15:54] – “By all means take your emotions along for the ride but make sure you’re driving the car.” [17:02] – “Self-control is the very essence of the character.” More from Bob: Bob Burg’s Books: The Go-Giver Influencer The Go-Giver A Teacher’s Guide to The Go-Giver The Go-Giver Leader Adversaries into Allies Go-Givers Sell More Endless Referrals The Success Formula Bob’s Website: https://burg.com/ Connect with Bob on Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/burgbob https://twitter.com/bobburg https://www.youtube.com/user/burgcommunications https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobburg/ Learn more about your ad choices. Inside the Mind of Alex Hormozi
Is there really a secret to success?  Entrepreneur Alex Hormozi learned a lot of lessons on his way to making $100 million in sales – and now he helps other business owners figure out how to do the same.  In this week’s episode, we explore the top takeaways from Alex’s success. Brenden talks about how his path first crossed Alex’s, shares his experience in a recent collaboration, and explores why haters may be a good benchmark of progress.  “If you wanna help 10,000 people, you get used to the idea that four or five hundred people are gonna hate your guts for no reason other than you being you. Because remember, nobody is booing nobodies. So if you're somebody, it means people are gonna start booing you.” – Brenden (03:39) We also analyze some of the key insights Brenden learned from Alex’s rise to the top, and talk about the simple three-pronged approach to success that built Alex’s brand into an empire. “That’s the key – when we start to bring emotion into our business, that's when we start to lose. What Alex has found is the people who are successful, the people who make it to the end are often the people who are willing to do the boring work long enough.” – Brenden (26:36) 3 Things Everyone Should Know About Success Practice what you preach. Many of us need to be reminded more than we need to be taught. In other words, we often already understand what we need to do – we just need to make sure we actually do it.  Narrow your focus. Most of the world’s most successful people prioritized one or two things until they built a following, a brand, an empire. Instead of splitting our efforts between multiple goals, we should focus 100% of our energy in one area.  Don’t wish for success – wish for the skill necessary to be successful. The idea of the burning wish comes from a popular card game where one character wished for a weapon, but not the power to wield it. Wishing for success doesn’t make us successful – get out there and start doing, and success will follow.  In This Episode  (02:59) Brenden’s experience collaborating with Alex (05:43) Alex’s story, and what he and Brenden have in common (08:48) Brenden’s most insightful takeaways from Alex (09:44) Insight #1 – implement what you preach (10:32) Insight #2 – only focus on one or two things (14:00) Insight #3 – the burning wish  (27:31) How Alex synthesizes his ideas (31:27) Alex’s approach to turning insights into actions (38:40) How Brenden and Alex’s paths first crossed (48:26) Alex’s simple framework for success Resources & Links Billy Samoa  https://billysamoa.com/ https://www.facebook.com/BillySamoaSaleebey/ https://twitter.com/BillySamoa https://www.instagram.com/billybelieve/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjQ9RSxYqDS4_VxBHNyQJw https://www.linkedin.com/in/billysamoa/ https://billysamoa.com/podcast-archive/ https://billysamoa.com/video-carousel/ https://billysamoa.com/blog-with-sidebar/ Brenden Kumarasamy https://www.mastertalk.ca/ https://www.facebook.com/mastertalkyt/ https://twitter.com/masteryourtalks https://www.instagram.com/masteryourtalk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KJVYCokY9M https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendenkumarasamy Mentioned https://www.youtube.com/c/AlexHormozi/videos https://www.acquisition.com/bio-alex https://www.instagram.com/hormozi/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexanderhormozi/ Learn more about your ad choices. Helping other business owners do what they need to do, to realize their vision and what they want to accomplish.  As business people, don't study emergencies. don't study failures but they should!  The importance of having somebody that you can talk to and how it helped you in business. You could have zero consequence for not saying yes to any request. All human brains are just like problem-solving machines. A lot of times your brain doesn't need you to solve problems, And if you can figure out a way to sort of separate you from your brain, your brain is one of the tools.   NOTABLE QUOTES: [09:27] -‘’ If you game out possible failures, if you could think about what could go wrong and what is the gump’s check that you need to do in your business” [18:39] -“ You regret the things you didn't do.” [18:56] -“ Bad decisions. The more you struggle, the faster you sink” [38:21] -“ The best chance you have of writing a book that's going to sell well is to sell a time management book.” [38:21] - ‘’ Everybody around you is going to die someday and you're going to lose people along the way. How to Decide How You Want to Make an Impact
When asked about the secret to his success and the world-changing impact of his work, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom shared the three simple questions he used to guide his journey: What do you love to do?  What are you good at?  Does the world need it?  In this week’s episode, we analyze these questions and explore the process behind deciding how you want to make an impact.  “It's really difficult to predict what someone wants to do in life and how they actually end up making an impact. … But the key is, as we learn more, little bit, little bit more about ourselves and we keep that top priority, we’re eventually able to connect the dots based on those three questions.” But must your three answers always line up? Can you make an impact with a passion you’re good at, but that the world doesn’t need?  “If you are missing one of the three ingredients, it falls apart. And I think it happens a lot, though, where we're passionate about something and we might even be good at doing it. But if the world doesn't need it, if there's not a demand, if there's not a way for you to give this in a way that's meaningful and helpful to other people, the first two don't matter.” Pulling from famous examples like Gary Vaynerchuk and Michael Seibel, we identify a few ways you can start deciding how to make an impact today: Make a list of your strengths. Don’t be afraid to compare yourself to others – it can be a useful lesson in perspective. Surround yourself with honest and open-minded people who won’t be afraid to speak up when you might be spinning your wheels Be fearlessly self-aware of your weaknesses so you can optimize against them.  “The point I want to drive is, we're making [a] mistake with our passions. We're overthinking our passions. … I think when we really focus in on what we intrinsically care about, that's when the magic really starts to open up.” In This Episode  The three questions to ask when deciding how you want to make an impact (03:23) What it means to reverse engineer your success (05:37) How to figure out what you’re good at (08:49) Gary Vaynerchuk, the gift of self-awareness and auditing your trifecta (14:07) Understanding your weaknesses so you can optimize against them (18:41) The big mistake people make when trying to identify their impact (22:10) Mimetic theory and why world-changers don’t follow the crowd (24:30) Micro decisions and the dangers of overthinking your passions (27:57) Resources & Links Billy Samoa  https://billysamoa.com/ https://www.facebook.com/BillySamoaSaleebey/ https://twitter.com/BillySamoa https://www.instagram.com/billybelieve/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjQ9RSxYqDS4_VxBHNyQJw https://www.linkedin.com/in/billysamoa/ https://billysamoa.com/podcast-archive/ https://billysamoa.com/video-carousel/ https://billysamoa.com/blog-with-sidebar/ Brenden Kumarasamy https://www.mastertalk.ca/ https://www.facebook.com/mastertalkyt/ https://twitter.com/masteryourtalks https://www.instagram.com/masteryourtalk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KJVYCokY9M https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendenkumarasamy/ Learn more about your ad choices. The Magic of Saying No
When was the last time you said no?  In this week’s episode, we explore why saying no can be so difficult – and how “no” can positively impact our lives.  “One side of the aisle is like, ‘Every opportunity, you just gotta bite your teeth into it.’ And the other side is like Warren Buffet who goes, ‘Well, the only thing that's made me successful in life was saying no to 99% of people and things.’ So who do we listen to?” – Brenden We also talk about why most of us default to saying no, and the fascinating sociological principles behind “yes.” “Our brains are still wired for survival. So what is the best way to survive, to cooperate, to live up to the expectations of other people to listen? What other people tell you to do, whether you agree with it or not.” – Brenden As we analyze why it’s so difficult to say no and the art of declining, we also talk about an important framework to help chronic “yes”-ers unlock the magic of “no”: Practice saying no. Start out small – decline invitations to events you’re not interested in, turn down dates with people you don’t care about. If you can’t say no to small things, you won’t be able to say no to bigger – and more important – things.  Figure out the things you absolutely must achieve in life. By focusing our energy and resources exclusively on our most fulfilling goals, it’ll become easier (and more rewarding) to say no. Realize that “no” is freeing. When we reject opportunities we aren’t interested in, we give ourselves permission to pursue what we do want.  “It's okay to say no, it's okay that you don't do that so that you can do something else that will serve your greater mission.” – Billy In This Episode  Why is it so hard to say no? What Are the Thought Leaders of Tomorrow Working on Today?
What were athletes like Shaq and Derek Jeter doing as kids to prepare for their future all-star careers?  What first steps did performers like David Bowie and scientists like Stephen Hawking take to start changing the world – and what can we learn from them in our own thought leadership journeys?  In this week’s episode, we explore the makings of a successful thought leader, and discuss what you can start doing now to become a more effective thought leader. “If you have the best ideas, but you don't actually spend the time to think strategically about how to share those ideas, no one will actually hear them. And if nobody hears them, you won't actually be able to make the impact that you would have liked to.” – Brenden We also talk about the importance of learning from old-school thought leaders like Jim Rohn and Bob Burg, especially when it comes to strengthening our personal brands, and how contemporary thought leaders like Lewis Howes and Jay Shetty are changing the game.  Billy: “I do think it's really important to underscore this idea that there are certain things that are timeless. So we can't ignore those things in exchange for us chasing the new things.” Brenden: “How do you immortalize ideas? That's another way I like to think about this. How do you make ideas permanent?”  So what can you be doing today to become a better thought leader tomorrow? Figure out what everybody’s already saying. When you start keeping up with the conversation, you’ll gain a better perspective on what you can add. Find where your unique voice fits in. Keep track of your original ideas in an app or notepad.  Remember to do what works for you, and don’t be afraid of experimenting with new strategies, ideas and technologies.  In This Episode  Why it’s important to consider what tomorrow’s thought leaders are doing now (04:15) Important lessons from old-school thought leaders, like Jim Rohn and Bob Burg (07:06) The top tenets old-school thought leaders all had in common (10:24) Why books are an important part of a thought leader’s tool chest (12:47) Another way to immortalize ideas: speaking engagements (15:33) Why it’s critical to be early to new technology and distribution trends (18:11) Thinking about your personal brand in terms of decades, not days (21:34) Why you need a YouTube channel (29:07) What tomorrow’s thought leaders are working on today (35:36) Why you can’t be afraid to define your brand in new ways (44:42) Resources & Links Billy Samoa  https://billysamoa.com/ https://www.facebook.com/BillySamoaSaleebey/ https://twitter.com/BillySamoa https://www.instagram.com/billybelieve/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjQ9RSxYqDS4_VxBHNyQJw https://www.linkedin.com/in/billysamoa/ https://billysamoa.com/podcast-archive/ https://billysamoa.com/video-carousel/ https://billysamoa.com/blog-with-sidebar/ Brenden Kumarasamy https://www.mastertalk.ca/ https://www.facebook.com/mastertalkyt/ https://twitter.com/masteryourtalks https://www.instagram.com/masteryourtalk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KJVYCokY9M https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendenkumarasamy/ Learn more about your ad choices. Inside The Mind of Adam Grant
Adam Grant is a #1 New York Times bestselling author who authored 5 books including Give and Take. He is recognized as one of the world’s 10 most influential management thinkers and Fortune’s 40 under 40. And today, Brenden and Billy dive deep inside the mind of Adam Grant. In this episode, you will learn how Adam impacts the lives of many and why Give and Take is in Brenden’s top 3 books! Make sure to listen in today! WHAT WE DISCUSS: [01:56] - How Brenden knew about Adam’s book, Give and Take [02:38] - How the book Give and Take changed Brenden [06:35] - Actions by Adam Grant [08:26] - Matchers, Givers, and Takers [14:45] - How the book formed the decisions Brenden makes today [17:51] - The Strategic Giver [19:20] - The key takeaway to Give and Take [21:23] - There are different levels to giving [25:16] - How to give strategically  [26:52] - How to track your givers [28:31] - Scott Harrison as a giver [30:42] - Adam Grant as a timeless thought leader [35:52] - How to structure ideas in a simpler way that general people can understand  VALUABLE INSIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Three types of people exist in the world: Givers, Matchers, and Takers. The main disadvantage of being a taker is you don't get to build sustainable relationships in your life. The most dangerous thing about being a Giver. That's the secret. Invest capital, take time out of your busy life, go out there into the world and find those givers and pour into those people. The key on the 3rd level of being a giver is to never give the hard stuff away for free. Who are your givers? What's interesting about Adam's thought leadership is it applies regardless of what year we are in. NOTABLE QUOTES: [25:18] - “Give the easy ask and if people are biting on it, quickly escalate the giving.”  [32:36] - “The key is Adam's ability to take very complex academic subjects to disseminate that information in the way that the general public understands.” [34:14] -  “The best way to communicate an idea simply and clearly is to try a hundred different iterations that don't work until we find the one that does.” USEFUL RESOURCES: Brenden's Website: https://www.mastertalk.ca/about YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/MasterTalks Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/masteryourtalk/ https://www.facebook.com/mastertalkyt/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendenkumarasamy/ https://twitter.com/masteryourtalks Adam Grant (Thought leader discussed): https://www.adamgrant.net/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=23010497 ) Learn more about your ad choices.
