Season 4: OA Vault - Chad Van Horn
Join us as Shawn sits down with Chad Van Horn, a Pittsburgh native, longtime Orange Arrow supporter, and founding partner attorney of his Florida-based law firm, Van Horn Law Group. Van Horn began helping his older brother on his paper route when he was only five and continued to work all the way through law school, which he attended at night so that he could work for a financial advising firm during the day. Possessing this admirable work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit from such a young age led him to found Van Horn Law Group immediately out of law school. Van Horn credits his ability to succeed as a young attorney to the power of relationships and finding a good mentor, which he advises everyone to do so that they can help to navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. As a former Orange Arrow board member, Van Horn understands the importance of growing outside of sports because, as he puts it, “Just because you grow your muscles doesn’t mean you’re growing your brain.”

The two discuss Gunn’s time at Pitt, where he played football and ultimately suffered a broken neck. However, he explains how he would not change his experience of getting injured, as he had to strive to overcome adversity and make a comeback, which made him who he is today. Gunn also outlines how he became involved with Stryker immediately after college, and he explains why the sales field is often a great path for student-athletes, as they have the team mentality, work ethic, and competitive spirit needed to succeed.

Season 4: Scott McCurley
Join us as Shawn sits down with Scott McCurley, the linebackers coach for the Dallas Cowboys! A former college football athlete, McCurley discusses his upbringing in the rural town of Bessemer, PA and explains how he followed his brother to Pitt to play football. While at Pitt, McCurley found his love for coaching and stayed after graduation to work as a graduate assistant coach under Coach Walt Harris. It was this job that allowed him to build the connections needed to secure his first NFL job as an intern for the Green Bay Packers, and over the course of 13 years, worked his way up the coaching staff to linebackers coach. Now living in Texas and working for the Cowboys, McCurley explains the power of building relationships to grow your career and succeed in life outside of sports.

Season 4: Marcus Bowman
Tune in as Shawn talks with Marcus Bowman, Deputy Athletic Director and CFO of Business Strategy at the University of Oklahoma. A former student-athlete, Bowman explains how he grew up in a competitive and sports-oriented family, but also one that instilled the value of working hard in school. This upbringing led to a full academic scholarship to Pitt and a spot on the basketball team, and, after graduating with a degree in finance, Bowman went on to serve as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Sport Administration at his alma mater. Now in Oklahoma, Bowman explains the path that led to his role at OU and gives advice for student-athletes looking to follow in his footsteps, including how to network, both personally and professionally, on the golf course.

Sit down with Shawn and this week’s guest, labor relations specialist and OA Board Chair, Jody Spolar! In this episode, Spolar delves into her deep Pittsburgh roots and her decision to go to Penn State, where she left without a clear professional direction, but had the opportunity to travel around the country to ultimately find her passion for labor relations. It was this newfound passion that led to a job at the LTV Steel factory in Cleveland, making her one of the first women to lead a labor relations department in the steel industry. Spolar then discusses her transition back to Pittsburgh to work with Pittsburgh Public Schools, a job that ultimately led her to connect with Shawn as he was in the process of creating Orange Arrow. They finish by sharing some of their favorite OA experiences, and their hopes and vision for Orange Arrow as it continues to grow.
