Arcade Classics | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 417 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Arcade Classics | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 417 Join Infinite Grenade Launcher as they remember all of the best Arcade Classics! Grab some quarters and Press START: More about Primal Rage: Primal Rage is a traditional two-dimensional fighting game in which two players select characters to battle each other in one-on-one combat, or a single player is faced with a campaign of fights against the CPU over increasing difficulty. The final battle of the single player game consists of fighting all the other CPU monsters with an increased power bar, made available in a mini-game prior to the fight. A total of seven characters are available for players to select from. Each character has their own specialized set of three attack moves and abilities. In the game, the object is to deplete the opposing character’s health meter before your own runs out. While fighting, human tribesmen will wander nearby and worship their gods during battle. This allows for the creatures to toss them around or devour some to regain strength (eating opponents’ worshipers will add a bonus to one’s score while eating one’s own will penalize the player). Prior to the final battle, a mini-game commences in which the player is given the chance to eat as many worshipers as possible to increase health for the endurance round. Two human-controlled characters can trigger an easter egg of human volleyball by keeping worshipers off the ground and batting them back and forth. There’s also a bowling easter egg that can be triggered when both players play Armadon. Unlike most fighting games, where the special moves are performed by moving the joystick followed by pressing one or more buttons, Primal Rage features a system where the player holds down certain buttons, then performs the joystick movements. Later revisions of the arcade game added the ability to perform special moves in the more traditional way, with motion followed by button presses, but kept the original method as well. After the opponent is defeated, a brief moment is allowed for the player to perform a finishing move to end the match in a more dramatic fashion; these were performed in a similar manner to the special moves. Although all characters feature three finishing moves, some of them were more easter eggs than fatalities, such as Vertigo’s “La Vache Qui Rit” (French for “the laughing cow”), a fatality in which Vertigo transforms her opponent into a cow, which moos and runs away. If “Game Gore” (an option in some versions) is switched on, the defeated character’s on-screen heart indicator will be shown exploding and their brain will dissolve to ashes.   Your Hosts: Justin Gentile – Instagram: @JustGentile Josie Johnson – Instagram: @JosieTheFiend Kyle Duncan Graham – Instagram: @KDuncanG Sourced: Wiki Listen to the audio podcast: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Google+ Arcade Classics | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 417 The post Arcade Classics | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 417 appeared first on Hollywood Redux.

Summer Sleepover | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 416 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Summer Sleepover | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 416 Grab the sugary snack and sodas because we’re staying up late with IGL to reminisce about the best gaming Summer Sleepovers! Grab a sleeping bag and Press START: More about Mario Party: Consisting of 50 minigames, including a hidden single-player one, Mario Party takes the form of a traditional board game, with players taking turns to roll (or, in this case, hit) the dice block and move ahead of the number of spaces shown ranging from one to ten. There are many different types of spaces players can land on, each producing a different effect. The primary objective of the game is to collect more stars than any other player. The winner of the game is the player with the most stars after all the turns have been completed. On some levels there is only one star at a time, while on others there could be many stars at once, appearing randomly on a space on the board where it remains until bought by a player for the specific amount of coins stated (20). After a star is collected, a new one appears on a different space on the game board or stays in the same place depending on the stage chosen. Stars can also be stolen from other players by passing a certain location on the board where a Boo resides—the player must then pay Boo 50 coins for the service of him stealing stars; coin stealing is free. A secondary objective is to gather coins as well, for they are necessary for buying essential items such as stars and determine the game-winner in the event of a tie. Coins are earned by landing on blue spaces or winning mini-games. Coins are lost by landing on red spaces, landing on a Bowser space, or losing certain mini-games. At the end of each round of play (i.e. after each of the four players has taken their turn), a random mini-game commences. The mini-games are generally short (about a minute in length) and fairly simple. There are 50 of them in total, divided into four different categories: 4-player mini-games may be divided into three types: The cooperative games, in which all four players collectively win or lose. The competitive free-for-alls, in which players must compete against each other in order to win a limited number of coins. The non-competitive free-for-alls, in which players accrue coins independently of one another and one player’s loss is not automatically another’s gain. 2-on-2 mini-games place players on teams, so they have to cooperate with others in the minigame to win (even though they’re still competing against each other in the main game). 1-on-3 mini-games have a trio against a lone player. Often, the game’s objective is for either the lone player or the team of three to survive for a certain amount of time while the opposing player/trio tries to take them out. The team of three must cooperate in order to win. 1-player mini-games only occur during a round when a player lands on a 1-player mini-game space. They give a single player an opportunity to earn (or lose) coins depending on his or her performance in the mini-game. At the end of the game, there are 3 bonus stars given out. The coin star award is given to the player who collected the most coins overall during the game, the mini-game star award is awarded to the player who collected the most coins in mini-games, and the player who landed on the most “?” spaces earns the Happening Star. It is common for more than one character to be awarded the same bonus star; this happens if there is a tie for the category in question. The person with the most stars after the bonus awarding has concluded is declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the player with the most coins wins, and if two players have the same number of both stars and coins, a dice block will be rolled to determine the winner. Mini-games happen at the end of each round or occasionally during a round when a player lands on a Bowser space or One-player mini-game spaces. In most situations, the winner(s) of a mini-game receive 10 coins for their victory. In some mini-games, the losing player(s) have to pay the winner(s) a sum of coins. Players can choose to play as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Wario, or Donkey Kong. Fortnite Summer Skirmish | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 415 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Fortnite Summer Skirmish | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 415 Jump off the Party Bus and into Infinite Grenade Launcher for their coverage of Season 5 of Epic Games’ Fortnite and UMG Gaming’s Fortnite Summer Skirmish competition. Grab a pickaxe and Press START: More about Fortnite: Currently, Fortnite is distributed as two different games, though each game uses the same engine and has similar graphics, art assets, and game mechanics. Fortnite: Save the World is designed as a player-versus-environment game, featuring four players cooperating towards a common objective on various missions. The game is set after a fluke storm appears across Earth, causing 98% of the population to disappear and the survivors to be attacked by zombie-like “husks”. The players take the role of commanders of home base shelters, collecting resources, saving survivors, and defending equipment that helps to either collect data on the storm or to push back the storm. From missions, players are awarded a number of in-game items, which include hero characters, weapon and trap schematics, and survivors, all of which can be leveled up through gained experience to improve their attributes. Fortnite Battle Royale is a player-versus-player battle royale game for up to 100 players, playing alone or in squads of two or four. Players airdrop from a “Battle Bus” that crosses the game’s map without any weapons. When they land, they must scavenge for weapons, items, and resources, avoiding being killed while attacking other players. Over the course of a round, the safe area of the map shrinks down in size due to an incoming storm; players outside that safe area take damage and can be killed. This forces remaining players into tighter spaces and encourages player encounters. The last player or squad alive is the winner. Both game modes give the ability to a player to use a pickax to knock down existing structures on the map to collect basic resources (wood, brick, and steel), from then which they can build pieces of fortification, such as walls, floors, and stairs. Such fortification pieces can be edited to include other features such as windows or doors. The materials used have different durability properties and can be updated to stronger variants using more materials of the same type. Within “Save the World” this enables players to create defensive fortifications around an objective or trap-filled tunnels to lure husks through. In “Battle Royale”, this provides the means to quickly traverse the map, protect oneself from enemy fire, or to delay an advancing foe. Both game modes are set to be free-to-play titles, though presently, “Save the World” is in early access and requires a purchase to play. Both games are monetized through the use of V-Bucks, the in-game currency that can also be earned only through “Save the World”. V-bucks in “Save the World” can be used to buy pinatas shaped like llamas to gain a random selection of items. In “Battle Royale”, V-bucks can be used to buy cosmetic items like character models or the like, or can also be used to purchase the game’s Battle Pass, a tiered progression of customization rewards for gaining experience and completing certain objectives during the course of a “Battle Royale” season. Star Wars Battlefront II: Ewok Hunt | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 414 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Star Wars Battlefront II: Ewok Hunt | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 414 Kyle, Josie, and Justin travel to the forest moon of Endor to fight for the rebellion alongside the inhabiting Ewoks for their reactions to Star Wars Battlefront II’s Ewok Hunt mode. Grab a lightsaber and Press START: More about Battlefront II: Star Wars Battlefront II features a single-player story mode, a customizable character class system, and content based on The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi movies. It also features vehicles and locations from the original, prequel, and sequel Star Wars movie trilogies. It also features heroes and villains that can be played based on characters from the Star Wars movies; the hero roster includes Luke Skywalker (Matthew Mercer), Leia Organa (Misty Lee), Han Solo (John Armstrong), Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), Yoda (Tom Kane), and Rey (Daisy Ridley), while the villain roster includes Darth Vader (Matt Sloan), Emperor Palpatine(Sam Witwer), Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), Bossk (Dee Bradley Baker), Iden Versio (Janina Gavankar), Darth Maul (Sam Witwer), and Kylo Ren (Matthew Wood/Roger Craig Smith) at launch. The game features a full campaign story mode, unlike 2015’s Battlefront. The game’s single-player protagonist, Iden Versio, leader of an Imperial Special Forces group known as Inferno Squad, participates in multiple events in the 30 years leading up to The Force Awakens. There are segments in the campaign where the player is able to control other characters such as Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren. Players can also play in the Arcade mode – an offline single player or local co-op where players can choose which side to play on and which battle to play in. Battles vary from team battles to onslaughts. Alternatively, players can choose to do a custom match, where they can change some of the settings and location. Instead of the paid Season Pass downloadable content (DLC) seen in the 2015 predecessor, this game is expanded with free DLC provided to all players with a free EA account. The DLC is free to all players, using a seasonal structure similar to Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege, according to Gavankar. The first season, released on December 13, 2017, was based on the movie Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and included Finn (John Boyega) and Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) as heroes, the planet Crait as a ground map, and a space map above D’Qar. The second season, released on May 16, 2018, was based on the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story and included Jabba’s Palace and Kessel as ground maps, the new game modes Hero Showdown and Extraction, new character skins for Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa. A third season was announced on June 9, 2018, during EA Play which will feature content from the prequel trilogy of Star Wars, centering on the origin of the Clone Wars with the planet Geonosis as a ground map, Conquest as a returning game mode, and new heroes and villains General Grievous, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Count Dooku. Death Stranding E3 Reactions | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 413 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Death Stranding E3 Reactions | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 413 Kojima Productions presents: Infinite Grenade Launcher’s reactions to the new Death Stranding footage from E3 2018. Press START: More about Death Stranding: Death Stranding is an action game set in an open world environment, which also includes multiplayer functions. Kojima compared the genre to how his earlier game Metal Gear – now considered as a stealth game – was called an action game during its release because the stealth genre was not considered to exist at the time. According to Kojima, one of the key aspects of the announcement trailer was the idea of a connection between life and death. He explained one of the main themes through a short story by Kōbō Abe; The first tool created by humans was a stick, meant as protection by putting a distance between oneself and “bad things”, and that the second was a rope, used to secure things one finds important. Kojima compared the main “tools” in action games – punching, shooting and kicking – to sticks, and that in Death Stranding, he wants people to communicate through the game equivalent of ropes. While the title refers to the phenomenon of cetacean stranding, “strand” is an alternative meaning for shore, and also stands for strings and connections. When the main character, named Sam, dies, the player is sent to another world, referred to as an upside-down world submerged in water. Kojima suggests that when the player returns to the world of the living, anything they did or any damage that an explosion or the likes causes when the player dies remains persistent in the world and does not go away. Another element talked about is the existence of a type of rain, called “Timefall”, with the ability to age or deteriorate whatever it hits. Another gameplay element talked about is the player’s ability to interact with the environment and wander outside of the character’s body, as well as recovering items when they die. Xbox Adaptive Controller Announcement Reactions | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 409 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Xbox Adaptive Controller Announcement Reactions | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 409 On today’s episode, Infinite Grenade Launcher reacts to the announcement of the new Xbox Adaptive Controller by Microsoft. Press START: More about The Xbox Adaptive Controller: The Xbox Adaptive Controller can be connected to external switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks — giving gamers with limited mobility the ability to customize their setups. Quadstick: Designed for quadriplegics, the Quadstick is a mouth-operated joystick that works by blowing air into or sipping air from it. PDP One-Handed Joystick: This analog joystick has mappable buttons that enable players to customize their gaming setups and has a soft elastomer-coated finish for extra comfort and grip. RAM Mount with Ablenet Buttons: Two AbleNet Jelly Bean buttons attached to RAM Mounts round bases and arms. This setup allows a player to control the game with one leg placed between the buttons. Development: In 2015, a team of engineers at Microsoft’s Xbox and gaming division began working on a prototype controller to help improve accessibility for video game input. Battlefield 5 Announcement Reactions | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 408 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Battlefield 5 Announcement Reactions | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 408 On today’s episode, Infinite Grenade Launcher reacts to the announcement and trailer of Battlefield V. Press START: More about Battlefield V: Battlefield V will focus extensively on party-based features and mechanics, scarcity of resources, and remove “abstractions” from game mechanics to increase realism. There will be an expanded focus on player customization through the new Company system, where players will be able to create multiple characters with various cosmetic and weapon options. Cosmetic items and the currency used to purchase others will be earned by completing in-game objectives. The game will feature several new multiplayer modes, including the “continuous” campaign mode “Tides of War”, and “Grand Operations”, an expansion of the “Operations” mode introduced in Battlefield 1 that focuses on matches taking place across multiple stages to simulate a campaign from the war. In Grand Operations, each round will have specific objectives, and performance in each stage will influence the next. Games will culminate with a “Final Stand”, with players using only a primary weapon with limited ammo, and no respawns. Similarly to Battlefield 1, the game will feature a collection of single-player “war stories” based on aspects of World War II.   Development: DICE unveiled the first details surrounding Battlefield V on 23 May 2018, with more information to be unveiled during the EA Play press conference near E3 2018 in June. DICE has stated that, unlike Battlefield 1, it does not plan to use paid downloadable content or “loot boxes” “that affect gameplay” within Battlefield V; new content will be added to the game for all players over time (which, itself, will progress through the different stages of World War II), at no additional charge. The decision to exclude these features was made following the outrage over the loot box system in Star Wars Battlefront II, another EA DICE title. God Of War 2018 Review | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 407 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
God of War 2018 Review | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 407 Infinite Grenade Launcher takes you to the world of Norse Gods with their review of God of War for the PlayStation 4. Grab the Leviathan Axe and Press START, BOY: More about God of War (2018): God of War (also known as God of War IV) is the sequel to God of War III as well as a continuation of the canon God ofWar-chronology. God of War is the eighth installment in the franchise overall. Unlike previous installments, this game focuses on Norse mythology and will follow an older Kratos in the years since God of War III. The game released on April 20, 2018, and is an exclusive PlayStation 4 launch. Many years have passed since Kratos took his vengeance against the Olympian gods. Having survived his final encounter with his father Zeus, Kratos now lives with his young son Atreus in the world of the Norse gods, a savage land inhabited by many ferocious monsters and warriors. In order to teach his son how to survive in such a world, Kratos must master the rage that has driven him for many years and embrace his newfound role as a father and a mentor. Development: On the day of December 6th, 2014, Corey Barlog, the lead animator of God of War and the game director of God of War II revealed that Sony Santa Monica was working on a new game, in the God of War Franchise. It was announced on Twitter, only taken down later by Sony. The game is conceptually set in the pre-migration point of Viking history; a period in Norse culture where the Norse gods were said to walk among mortals. The game’s soundtrack was composed by Bear McCreary. VRLA 2018 Reloaded | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 406 Infinite Grenade Launcher reloads VRLA 2018 to bring you more interviews with leaders in AR/VR gaming and technology! Press START: More about VRLA: VRLA is the largest – and most accessible – conference and exhibition in the industry. The 5th annual event takes place on May 4th & 5th at the sprawling Los Angeles convention center in the beating heart of the entertainment industry. Far Cry 5 | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 404 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Far Cry 5 | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 404 On today’s episode of Infinite Grenade Launcher, visit the scenic mountains of Montana with a review of Far Cry 5 and discover one of Kyle’s forgotten gems, Hyper Light Drifter. Press START: More about Far Cry 5: Similar to its predecessors, Far Cry 5 is an action-adventure first-person shooter set in an open world environment which the player can explore freely on foot or via various vehicles. Unlike previous titles in the series where the player takes on the role of a set character, the game gives the player the opportunity to customize their character’s appearance. The player has a variety of ranged and explosive weapons to fight against enemies, with the game placing a renewed emphasis on close-quarters combat compared to previous Far Cry titles by introducing a wider range of melee weapons. In addition, Far Cry 5 features a new weapons ballistics system that includes elements like a bullet dropping over a distance to make it more realistic. Creative director Dan Hay described the design of the open world as being modeled on the outposts from previous titles in the Far Cry series. These outposts represented a small section of the map occupied by enemy forces and the player was tasked with liberating them by killing or neutralizing the enemy presence. The outposts were designed with multiple approaches for the player to take and it was this element that the development team tried to recreate in the wider game world of Far Cry 5. The player is dropped into the game world with little context, direction or objective markers and is instead required to navigate the world on their own. Hay expressed a desire to create what he termed the “anecdote factory”, a game where two players could venture out from the same point in opposite directions and have completely different experiences that they would then share with one another anecdotally. To assist with this, most of the game world is accessible to the player after completing the game’s introductory missions and they are free to advance through these areas as they choose; by comparison, previous titles in the series gradually opened up the game world to the player with story missions guiding their progress through open areas. The game also features a recruitment system in which the player can recruit locals in the county to fight alongside them similar to the “Buddy” system used in Far Cry 2 or the “Guns for Hire” system in Far Cry 4. In this Guns for Hire system, the player can recruit locals to join their cause at which point they will fight alongside the player. In addition to these Guns for Hire, the game also includes “Specialists” or non-playable characters with their own unique skills and personalities. The recruitment system replaces the beacon system used in previous titles. For example, Far Cry 3 featured radio towers and Far Cry 4 featured bell towers that the player had to climb in order to open up parts of the map and various activities in the region. Far Cry 5 removed this system and instead rely on the player forging relationships with other characters to discover story missions, events, and other characters. The player has the ability to tame wild animals through the Specialists, which is based on a system that was previously introduced to the series in Far Cry Primal. The tamed wildlife will assist the player in combat and follow the player’s orders. Different wildlife has different combat patterns. A fishing mechanic was also introduced and a variety of fish can be caught. The campaign can be played individually or with a partner through the game’s cooperative multiplayer mode known as “Friends for Hire”. Josie’s Battlefield Easter Eggs | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 403 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Josie’s Battlefield Easter Eggs | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 403 Josie learns Morse code to decipher all the hidden Easter eggs in Battlefield 1 on today’s episode of Infinite Grenade Launcher. Press START: More about Battlefield 1 ‘Apocalypse’ DLC: The fourth and final DLC for Battlefield 1, the Apocalypse DLC, is centered around some of the most brutal battles of the Great War. The DLC was released on February 20, 2018, containing five maps, six guns, and a new game mode, among other additions. The three infantry-based maps of Apocalypse reflect three of the bloodiest battles of World War I; Capporetto set in present-day Slovenia, Passchendaele in Belgium, and River Somme in France. The DLC brought no new factions to the game, but introduced a new game mode titled “Air Assault” in the remaining two maps. These two maps, both only plane- and zeppelin-focused, are named “Razor’s Edge” and “London Calling.” While both maps feature combat above detailed landscapes (Razor’s Edge taking place in the Alps and London Calling occurring over the city of London), neither are based on factual battles. Apocalypse brought new weapons and gadgets to Battlefield 1 as well. The weapons released include the RSC SMG, Howell Automatic, lMG 08/18, Ross MkIII, M1917 Enfield, and Webley Revolver Mk VI. In addition, melee weapons including the Broken Bottle, Wine Bottle, Meat Cleaver, and Prybar were introduced to the game. DICE and the Battlefield team also added a number of other components to the game, including vehicles, gadgets for various infantry classes, and the stationary Livens Projector/Gaswurfminen, located on each of the three infantry-based maps. The DLC also features two new air vehicles, the Airco DH.10 and the Hansa-Brandenburg G.I. Justin’s Reality | Virtual Reality / VR / AR | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 402 Fire up your VR headset and prepare to enter The VOID with Justin as he recaps interactive VR experiences, Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire AND Ready Player One Challenge: The Maze.  Press START: More about Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire: SPOILERS AHEAD: When the players first enter the briefing room, you meet Captain Cassian Andor. He briefs you on his acquisition of an Imperial transport and gives you key details about a weapon of great power held by the Empire on their base on Mustafar. From there you board an Imperial transport where you meet a pilot and “sassy robot” K-2SO, and the whole team speeds to Mustafar via hyperspace. The Imperial base does not sound happy to hear of your arrival. Consequently, they demand the ship land immediately to be inspected. A hover platform docks with the ship and takes you to the main base. You enter a lift down into the base via a corridor which leads to a rack of blasters. The alarm sounds and K-2SO instructs players to pick up blasters because the Empire knows you’re here. While you’re trapped outside the main base, Stormtroopers file out onto walkways to shoot at players. You defeat the Stormtroopers but in addition, monster insectoids emerge from the lava and spit fire at you. A giant insectoid appears and you must kill it, hence, K-2SO unlocks the door once the beast is dead. Players move back into a corridor and K-2SO presents you with a memory puzzle whilst Stormtroopers shoot the players from behind. The players run down a corridor leading to a room with the weapons crate you need. The pilot opens the crate and finds a lightsaber with a fixed center. The players then hear heavy breathing then a lightsaber flies across the room and stabs the pilot in the chest. The lightsaber zooms back to land in the hands of the one and only, Darth Vader. Stormtroopers also move into the room. After players fire at Vader and the Stormtroopers, Vader force crushes the rebels’ weapons. Vader starts walking ominously towards the party. K-2SO rams the Imperial transport into the side of the building, scooping up the players and the crate. After leaving the atmosphere, you jump to hyperspace and the adventure is over…for now! The Video Game History Foundation | Gaming News | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 313 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
The Video Game History Foundation | Gaming News| Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 313 In this NEW IGL Podcast,  hosts Kyle and AJ take a look at a great cause for games and let you know how you can get involved with The Video Game History Foundation. Press start: Why Video Game Preservation Matters Video game preservation matters because video games matter. Games are deeply ingrained in our culture, and they’re here to stay. They generated an unprecedented $91 billion dollars in revenue in 2016. They’re being collected by the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Library of Congress. They’ve inspired dozens of feature films and even more books. They’re used as a medium of personal expression, as the means for raising money for charity, as educational tools, and in therapy. And yet, despite all this, video game history is disappearing. The majority of games that have been created throughout history are no longer easily accessible to study and play. And even when we can play games, that playable code is only a part of the story. In order to know how and why games were made, how they were advertised and sold, and even how they were seen by players of their time, historians and researchers rely on ephemeral materials – artwork, interviews, reviews, packaging, advertising, internal documentation, and more – to tell a complete story. And without an organized effort to collect, document, and preserve these materials, there is a very real danger of losing them forever. The VGHF Digital Library The heart of the Foundation is its digital library, an online repository of artifacts related to the history of video games and video game culture. The ultimate goal is to create a searchable, organized, always-online archive of verified, high-quality material that is accessible to researchers and historians as a public education resource. A sampling of the types of materials we’re already adding to the library include: High-resolution, lossless scans of game packaging and documentation. Playable binary code that has been verified as clean and untainted. Marketing and PR material, including press kits, “preview” screenshots of games, trailers, vintage slides, and advertisements. Periodicals, newsletters, and other printed resources. Internal documentation, notes, source code and assets, and related materials from game creators and publishers that offer behind-the-scenes insight into how games were made and sold. Digitized video, including sales videos that were never before available to the public. Due to time constraints, the current primary focus of the archive is to preserve the information that we consider the most volatile: data stored on media formats not meant for long-term storage (CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, EPROMs, magnetic disks). Our secondary focus is on archiving rare materials that are difficult to obtain or, in many cases, one-of-a-kind. The Video Game History Foundation Digital Library is an ongoing work-in-progress that will take some time to complete. In the meantime, we’re mirroring curated “special collections” and posting them on our blog. The VGHF Reference Collection We’re building and maintaining a physical collection and reference library, primarily composed of books, magazines, and other paper materials related to the history of video games, to be permanently situated on the West Coast of the United States in a location to be determined. The bulk of our current library comes from the private collection of our co-founder, Frank Cifaldi, which is being donated to the Foundation. The primary focus of the collection-to-date has been on video and PC game-specific magazines and periodicals published in the United States between approximately 1981 and 2000. The collection covers both consumer and trade publications, as well as publications where video games are not the primary focus, including coin-op, toy, and consumer electronics magazines. Now that the library is on its way to becoming a public resource, we’re hoping to expand the collection to include more international publications, as well as those published in the 21st century. Museum Aid & Facilitation The Video Game History Foundation is not a museum, and we have no current plans to become one. But the conservation of physical items is every bit as important as digitizing them, so we work closely with the major video game museums and archives to make sure artifacts have permanent homes. Artifacts in our possession are often transitory: once we’ve digitized and preserved an item, we donate it to its permanent home. We also advise those wishing to donate their items on what their options are, and as part of our education program, expose the institutions to new audiences. Our founding board has worked with many of the major video game museums and archives for years, and has donated items and funding to the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Strong Museum of Play, and the National Videogame Museum, among others. Pokemon Snap Turns 18 | Retro Gaming | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 312 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Pokemon Snap Turns 18 | Retro Gaming | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Level 312 Travel to Pokémon Island, meet Professor Oak, and embark on a safari to take photographs of (and celebrate) the 18th birthday of Pokemon Snap for N64. Join hosts Justin, AJ, Kyle, and the rarest Pokemon in a NEW IGL Retro Gaming. Press start: About the Game: Pokemon Snap is a first-person shooter type of game published by Nintendo for their much beloved system, the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It is a spin-off game in the Pokémon collection of video games across platforms. It was one of the first console-based games for it and featured many Pokémon rendered for the first time in real-time 3D (!). The game was re-released for the Wii’s Virtual Console in December 2007 and the Wii Virtual Console in 2016. The objective of the game is to take pictures of Pokémon, using items such as apples and “pester balls” to achieve better shots. After each round, players are judged based on the quality of their photos. The Virtual Console version features the ability to send pictures taken in the game to the Wii Message Board and to friends, whereas the OG Nintendo 64 cartridge could be taken to Blockbuster (extinct video stores) to get pictures from the game printed on stickers. By the end of 1999, Pokémon Snap sold 1.5 million copies, and was a strong rental title in 1999 after its release. It was met with a mostly positive reception by critics, described as “addictive” by video game sites like IGN and similar. It has also been compared to other notable video games involving photography, such as Afrika, Dead Rising, and Beyond Good & Evil.   Synopsis: Todd Snap is a Pokémon photographer who gets summoned by Professor Oak to Pokémon Island, a place with a variety of climatic and geographic regions where Pokémon live undisturbed by humans. Oak needs pictures to accompany his scientific findings and knows from past experience that Todd is the right person for the job. Equipped with a motorized, amphibious buggy named the Zero-One, Todd explores the island and photographs the Pokémon that inhabit its environments. From Professor Oak’s research hub, the player can select between levels and features via a menu system. After completing a course, the player selects the best picture of each Pokémon to show Professor Oak. Oak’s scoring takes into account aspects of the pictures such as the Pokémon’s size, pose, and framing. Extra points are awarded for capturing a “special” pose or Pokémon, like a surfing Pikachu, and snapping multiples of the same Pokémon within the frame. Scoring well in the Pokémon Report and photographing a wide variety of Pokémon progress the player in the game. Players start out with only a camera, but later in the game Professor Oak provide a number of special items used to obtain better photographs. The game has seven levels: Beach, Tunnel, Volcano, River, Cave, Valley, and the special course “Rainbow Cloud.” However, the staggered acquisition of items ensures that the player must re-explore the courses to discover new material. Levels must be replayed after acquiring new items in order to locate hidden Pokémon, alternate routes, or photographic opportunities that yield the best scores. Three Big News Stories Unrelated to the Nintendo Switch Release | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Gaming News | Level 311 - Infinite Grenade Launcher | Gaming Podcast
Three Big News Stories Unrelated to the Nintendo Switch Release | Infinite Grenade Launcher Podcast | Gaming News | Level 311 Ready Players one and two for a NEW episode of the Infinite Grenade Launcher. This week, hosts AJ and Kyle are dishing on notable gaming news drowned out by the deafening roar surrounding the Nintendo Switch release, such as Twitter’s developing deals around the world to stream events, the new power of the Unreal Engine, and some good news for XBox Live gamers on a budget. Press start: Twitter makes deals around the world to stream large gaming conferences and E-sporting events. Yet another harbinger of the end for broadcast TV? Twitter and two massive eSports companies, ESL and DreamHack, announced they will be teaming up to live stream more than 15 global video game events this year as well as exclusive, original content created for the social media platform. It’s Twitter’s first long-term eSports streaming deal. Esports are video game competitions staged in packed arenas around the world watched by thousands of fans online. They are one of the fastest growing spectator sports online AND in person: the competitions regularly sell out NBA-sized arenas or bigger venues and eSports fans are forecast to grow quickly. Research predicts a jump from 191 million enthusiasts worldwide this year to 286 million in 2020. Livestream sporting events via Twitter This deal may help boost that popularity and in turn, Twitter engagement. The direct engagement of Twitter connects fans with the events, but more specifically offers eSports an opportunity to interact with their target audience on social media. Twitter Chief Operating Officer Anthony Noto extolled this collaboration as a way to tap into the engaged audience of gamers are already using Twitter for content. Sound off in the comments below – do you think this will be a good thing for gaming or do you think it will worsen the gaming world when more notoriety and coverage occurs on a major platform? Unreal Engine 4 is now so powerful that developers can in real time composite fully operational gaming or CGI elements into what a camera sees.  What do you get when you combine a modular, motion-capped car, a 360-degree camera and some real-time work from Unreal Engine 4? Chevrolet recently created an impressive short film showing two augmented reality cars racing each other. WATCH The Human Race, a short film showing Unreal Engine 4 in action The short film, called The Human Race, may not appear super special EXCEPT – the cars aren’t rendered in post-production, they are being rendered in real-time using Unreal’s engine. This is absolutely incredible and a game changer for filmmakers, game developers, car companies – anyone who benefits from showcasing visual effects in real time. Developing the Unreal Engine 4 XBOX releases new Live streaming service for gamers on a budget that’s only $10 per month! Broke gamers say huzzah! Having to splash out big bucks on the latest game may soon be a thing of the past: Microsoft announced their new subscription service Game Pass launching next spring on the Xbox One. For $10 a month, console owners will have access to over 100 Xbox One and compatible games similar to video content subscription services like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Games available on the Gamepass There is a slight difference. The Xbox Game Pass is not a streaming service, like PlayStation Now, but a game download subscription along the lines of EA Access. Subscribers who pay the $9.99 monthly fee can choose from games like Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16 and SoulCalibur II (titles revealed Microsoft’s official announcement) then they download them to their system and play as if the game were purchased digitally.
