Certain classic books will teach you what the thought-leaders of the past wrote that influenced what we believe and how we think today. A lot of these things are beliefs that we take for granted and may not even realize that we have. The Harvard Classics & The Great Books of the Western World are 2 series of books that seek to compile the definitive classical works that created what we see as modern society. Why does it matter to me? To be an independent thinker, you must first understand where the current thoughts and beliefs come from.  A frame of reference is vital to independent thinking! Second, you must develop a first-hand understanding of why you think the way you think if you are to critically think about your own beliefs. Both of these book series step from Ancient Greek through Rome, then to the philosophers of the modern and post-modern era to today. The evolution of thought is both fascinating and a crucial tool in the thinker’s tool belt. Mortimer Adler wrote this idea so eloquently in the first book from the Great Classics: “These books are the means of understanding our society and ourselves.  They contain the great ideas that dominate us without our knowing it.  These is no comparable repository of our tradition.” I recommend Great Books of the Western World over the Harvard Classics, but I would encourage anyone to try to get a complete set of both. Key Points You have an important message to get across.  You need to know how to effectively communicate that to your audience. You can’t shortcut relationship. You must have real, bidirectional communication. Anytime you ask something from your audience, you take a “withdrawl” from the relationship account. Anytime you give something to serve your audience, you make a “deposit” in the relationship account. You can’t shortcut engagement. Asking superficial questions is obvious to the audience. “Preaching” requires you to have the respect of the audience already. “Engaging” builds trust as you communicate. “Engaging” is respectful of the audience’s need. You’ve got to discuss and interact with other people to really flesh out your ideas. Discussion helps you become an intelligent independent thinker. Socratic Method The Socratic Method is a philosophy guiding discussion on a topic and took several forms. Good, quick breakdown: http://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/socratic-teaching/606 In-depth, practical guide: http://www.socraticmethod.net/how_to_use_the_socratic_method/using_the_socratic_method.html Socratic Circles fostered discussion on a topic, then discussion on the discussion to measure not only the topic, but the discussion around it. Modern similarities exist in social and new media between Youtube, Podcasts, blogs, etc. and Twitter, Facebook, etc. “This approach is based on the belief that participants seek and gain deeper understanding of concepts in the text through thoughtful dialogue rather than memorizing information that has been provided for them.”  —Wikipedia The goal is to foster dialogue without argument, which immediately stops a beneficial conversation. Avoid using definite terms like “always” and “never”.  Instead, use “usually” and “I believe”.  Harsh terms cause people to put up mental blocks. Active Listening Focus on what the other person is saying as they talk. Don’t just think about what you are going to say while they are talking. Asking real questions show that you are listening. Asking questions just to show that you are listening ends up appearing fake. Passive Aggressiveness Passive aggressive people typically have expectations that they aren’t voicing, but are expecting others to meet. Because they are hesitant to voice the expectations, they’re hesitant to outwardly discuss their feelings about them being unmet and instead become uncooperative. Don’t go into a conversation with a set agenda.
