IF Not Now, WHEN?
It seems as if society and culture want to turn the clock back on women. I challenge the difficult fact that women do not have their equal rights, and talk about why it is so hard for our culture to grant women their equal rights under the constitution. The ERA or Amendment 28, is in my estimation 242 years too late. It is almost 100 years since it was first drafted, so, what's the holdup? The lack of an ERA has given lawmakers the boldness to curtail women's right to choose, their self-determination and economic empowerment and a good quality of life. I list the 13 states which are holdouts still refusing to grant women their equal rights. Alabama (now has the strictest abortion law), Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia. We need just one more state to tip the scales in favor of equality for all women. Our Forefathers encouraged us to do something about the way things are as our "duty" and I challenge listeners to help change leadership culture. In this podcast I make the case that granting women their equal rights is part of their unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We cannot have one without the other -we would be just kidding ourselves. If women's unalienable rights and freedoms are based on someones else's goodwill, let's just say that good will is not always present in those with power. My perspective is that it is one of the direct links to the leadership challenges women face in the workplace. Why are leaders comfortable with a status quo of discrimination and inequity? If you don't know what I mean, from a business perspective, let me put it three ways 1) there are only about 4% of women in top leadership positions, 2) we still celebrate the wage gap instead of closing it by paying women equally, 3) why is the incidence of sexual harassment still so pervasive and high in the workplace context? We cannot go quietly back to the 50's. Do you think that women should have their equal rights? what action will you take to change the way things are? Please share with friends, subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and leave a comment or question. But no matter what stay in the lead by taking action on this!
