The old man and the boy fight the Nancin. The old man is shot.

The completion of the old man’s backstory. The old man and the boy come upon Angry Gray’s and Thin Old Woman’s body. Most of the people are already dead. The boy sees Quail Girl writhe. The old man leads the boy in a counter attack.

The boy dreams about dancing with Quail Girl. The old man tells him the story of how Big Owl cut off his penis. They reach Eagle Creek, nearly home. We learn the old man’s backstory: how he got his name, his early raids, his first marriage.

The boy recalls the story of the orphan as they walk through the congregation of rock people. They run into a column of American soldiers, escape and make it back to the hidden camp.

The boy is exhausted from running through the desert. He hallucinates about Sun and worries about the stories he has heard. The old man and the boy race for a canyon, a defensive site, ​to repel the mounted Mexican soldiers. In the dark, they escape into the mountains.

The old man and the boy visit their relatives, and the old man tells the story of Vulva Woman. Then the old man and the boy go down to Fronteras alone, steal livestock and race for home. Behind them are the mounted Mexican soldiers.

The boy completes his four days of training. The old man and the boy walk to the hidden camp where they make the final preparations for their raid. After which, they visit Antelope's Water: the place where the old man slept when the boy's parents were slaughtered.

The boy completes his second day of training and, that night, hears the story about how Sun set the people at war against the Nancin, the Americans. The story disturbs the boy.

As he returns from his journey, the boy recalls the last time he disobeyed his grandfather and was attacked by a brown bear. The people are short on food. The old man listens to their complaints and decides to lead a raid into Mexico. There is no one to go with him. He decides to take the boy. The boy begins the first of four days of training.
