The debate over the role that gas should play in the energy transition has been brought into sharp focus in recent months as a global energy crisis has unfolded. While some argue that the shift from hydrocarbons should be accelerated in light of recent events, others caution that further investment in oil and gas is fundamental to delivering energy security and economic prosperity. In this webinar, we look at what lessons can be learnt from the unprecedented spike in energy prices. Joining this crucial discussion are Ronald Smith, senior oil and gas analyst at BCS Global Markets, James Henderson, director of Energy Transition Research Initiative at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies and Leonid Grigoriev, Professor of Moscow Higher School of Economics. Steve Esau, general manager at LNG bunkering association SEA-LNG, makes the case for LNG as the best available solution for decarbonising shipping while keeping the sector competitive. He also responds to criticism over the methane emissions associated with LNG bunkering, and comments on what the recent gas price spike might mean for the fuel’s perception as affordable.

The IEF’s chief economist Leila Benali discusses with NGW the forum’s new initiative to create a uniform methodology for quantifying methane emissions.  

We are joined by Mich Hein, CEO of Electrochaea, to discuss the ins and outs of a proprietary bio-methanation technology that the company has developed. The process involves using captured CO2 and green hydrogen to produce synthetic natural gas that can help decarbonise difficult-to-abate industries. The technology has gained serious attention, with Electrochaea recently bringing on board international oilfield services provider Baker Hughes as a lead investor.

The Arctic has been hailed as the future of Russia’s oil and gas industry. But developing the vast reserves found there is no easy undertaking. Mark Gyetvay, CFO of Russia’s largest independent gas producer, discusses how the company is balancing its ambitious LNG growth plans with new decarbonisation initiatives. While the IEA has called for no more investment in gas, Novatek sees the fuel as an integral part of the low-carbon energy future.
