Vasileios Basios on Consciousness and Complex Systems

Dr. Vasilieios Basios is a senior researcher at the Physics of Complex Systems Department of the University of Brussels, where he conducts interdisciplinary research on self-organisation and emergence in complex matter as well as on aspects of the foundations of complex systems. We first met in the early 1990s in Greece where a number of pioneering meetings on a science of consciousness were arranged by his mentor and our mutual friend Emilios Bouratinos, author of the seminal work Science, Objectivity and Consciousness. During his formative years Vasili worked within the team of Ilya Prigogine (Nobel laureate and honorary SMN Member) at the Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry in Brussels. He is interested in the history of ideas in science and their role in the transformation of science beyond the prevailing mechanistic world-view. As a board member of the Scientific & Medical Network, he also maintains a keen interest in contemporary research avenues that have started to lead us to a new renaissance, concerned with the renewal of a “re-enchanted” nature. Vasili is also a Member of the Steering Group of the Galileo Commission.  Imaginal Inspirations is hosted by David Lorimer, Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network and Chair of the Galileo Commission, an academic movement dedicated to expanding the evidence base of a science of consciousness. www.scimednet.orgwww.galileocommission.orgwww.mysticsandscientists.orgwww.beyondthebrain.org Works mentioned:  Science, Objectivity and Consciousness by Emilios BouratinosChaos, Information Processing and Paradoxical Games: The Legacy of John Nicolis. By Gregoire Nicolis and Vasilieios BasiosExploring Complexity by Gregoire Nicolis and Ilya Prigogine The Passion Of The Western Mind by Richard TarnasOrder Out of Chaos : Man's New Dialogue with Nature by Ilya Prigogine, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard BachThe Sleepwalkers : A History of Man's Changing Vision of the Universe by Arthur KoestlerGiordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition by Frances A.
