John called his recovery from addiction “a rebuilding process. A reclamation process“, and I would add that perhaps it’s also a redemptive measure, or at least an attempt to it. The process he named as “creating the new John“ was the re-pavement of a road he had damaged himself. And that re-pavement, which in the case of an addict is ongoing, takes both time and a lot of hard-work. On October 20th 2015 I went to meet with an astrologer. I was 32 and looking to get past what I felt was being stuck both mentally and spiritually. I was also curious and hoping to get answers, even if they came from an unusual source. But looking into the mystical is not unlike me. What is unlike me is to seek complex, deeply personal answers from external sources. I wasn’t yet aware to look within and I also wasn’t aware of it then, but what I was looking for was to recover my own sense of self-identity and my own creativity. Both of which had felt scattered and scarce in recent years. The astrologer had a lot to say and her words stuck with me for a long time.
